11 Acre Land Art Portrait is Largest Ever in the UK

In partnership with the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s, Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada and his team used 30,000 pegs, 2,000 tonnes of soil, 2,000 tonnes of sand and various stones on an 11-acre plot to create the largest land art portrait ever made in the UK.

Entitled Wish, the artwork is a portrait of an anonymous Belfast child. Located in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast, Ireland, the piece was originally planned to be 5 acres but ended up being 11. It is the largest piece the artist has ever done.

Completed in four weeks, Jorge and his team used Topcon GPS technology and elbow grease to plot out the site with stakes and builders’ line before scores of volunteers got involved in spreading the various natural materials throughout the site.

Those flying in and out of George Best Belfast City Airport got a bird’s eye view of the artwork while others could observe the piece from various buildings and viewing platforms. Visitors were also allowed to walk around at ground level for a completely different perspective. The festival, which ended this past Sunday, is Ireland’s biggest.
