A weekend heatwave which saw temperatures around 90F (32C), drew tens of thousands to Orange County’s Newport Beach, sparking spirited conversation about the challenges of enjoying the weather and outdoors while maintaining social distancing rules.
Local governments have attempted to quell the crowds at their own beaches with a variety of solutions including: closing nearby parking lots, only allowing access for active use (e.g., walking, running, or surfing), closing on weekends, shutting down main access roads during peak times, and increasing police presence to help enforce social distancing rules.
As summer weather continues to creep in, the challenge of enjoying the outdoors while maintaining social distancing rules will become a critical battleground for slowing the virus.
