The Life of a Finnish Island as Told Through the Seasons

Written by

Jani Ylinampa is a Finnish photographer that has built a steadily growing following on Instagram and Facebook for his breathtaking landscape photography.

The artist’s work is focused primarily around his home region of Finnish Lapland where he captures the region’s natural beauty as well as the incredible Northern Lights.

In this seasonal series, Jani uses a drone to document the life of a small Finnish island called Kotisaari near Rovaniemi. According to the town’s tourist website:

Rovaniemi was a legendary lumberjack town, and the Ounas- and Kemi rivers were used as floating channels for the log industry from the late 1800 century until end of 1980 when the floating channels were replaced by the more modern use of trucks. In the good old days the Kotisaari Island was a traditional stronghold of the Lumberjacks in Kemijoki. The Lumberjacks’ history still lives on in the buildings of the island. The old boathouse has been renovated and it is now used as a tavern.
