View of the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, a monastery on Holy Island that dates to the 7th-century when St Aidan arrived here from Iona, at the request of King Oswald of Northumbria. In April 1536, there were over 850 monasteries, nunneries, and friaries scattered throughout England and Wales. By April 1540 there were none. In that period shrines to saints were destroyed, libraries were burned, and many precious relics were lost. Religious were made to wander the countryside, and travellers no longer had safe havens to retire to for an evening. The major religious and social upheaval during these four years is known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Monastery land was seized and sold off cheaply to nobles and merchants. They in turn sold some of the lands to smaller farmers. This process meant that a large number of people had good reason to support the Dissolution. Why did the King suppress the monasteries? The historian Trevelyan said that "Henry VIII's... foolish wars in France had emptied his treasury... If Henry had not been bankrupt, he might never have dissolved the monasteries at all".
