I was introduced to alcohol ink on Yupo by Wendy Videlock who I chanced to meet on Facebook. I thought her work was exciting so, of course, I wanted to know more. I checked out her blog, The Fifth Element (link) and was happy to discover she sells DVDs demo-ing her process. I ordered the demo which was very well done and full of information. Wendy buys her supplies from her local Michaels store but we don't have one nearby so I ordered from Tim Holtz online (link) . She recommends his line of Ranger Adirondack acid free inks, claiming they are the most vibrant of any she has tried. When I went to the Tim Holtz store online, I searched 'alcohol ink' and a page opened with a list of most all the supplies needed. I've been intending to try my hand with Yupo for a few years so this was the impetus to order a few sheets from Blick and since all my supplies have arrived I've been hooked. Playing with ink on Yupo is addicting. As Wendy recommended in her demo, I've been experimenting on small (4" x 4"/ 4" x 5") squares of Yupo, getting accustomed to the way each different color of ink reacts/behaves, alone and together with other colors. I'm posting today's samples to see what they look like on screen. To anyone who would like to try alcohol ink on Yupo and is interested in Wendy's DVD, here is a link: http://nutshell-wendy.blogspot.com/2012/06/alcohol-inks-on-yupo-tutorial.html Note: You can contact Wendy via Facebook or by email

Little Quirks I - Melanie Smolenaars Details: Alcohol ink on 200gsm Yupo Paper. 28 x 35.5 cm. Unframed. All art comes signed and with a certificate of authenticity. Description: This painting is one part of a pair of paintings called ‘little quirks’. This little one is number 1.This series consists of 3 paintings with quirky flowers. They have a bit of a fantasy world, or Alice in Wonderland vibe going on. The have a wonderful warm colour palette, and the gold really takes it to the next level! Materials: This painting was painted using alcohol inks on Yupo paper. Yupo paper is a special synthetic paper, developed specifically for art. It is non porous, making it very easy for the inks to flow freely. It doesn't absorb fluids, therefor it doesn't buckle. It is very thick, and hard to rip. Alcohol inks are highly pigmented, alcohol based inks. They can be used like other media like oils, acrylics and watercolors. By layering the inks, and by using different techniques, the artist can create a feeling of depth and flow. The thing that is different about these inks is how unpredictable they are, and to what extend one can control them. Guiding the inks takes a certain level of skill, but also the ability to accept their unruliness. I think that’s why I love them so much! It is finished with several layers of UV protection and varnish to help prevent fading.

In this guide, we’ll discuss different techniques you can use with alcohol ink and the basic materials you’ll need for each.
Alcohol ink is an extremely flexible and impressionistic medium. Just as with any art, practice will allow you greater control over the medium and allow you to more strongly define your paintings and patterns, but what you choose to do with theses inks, whether it’s create flowing abstract art or stained-glass-like im

Alcohol inks are best used on non-porous surfaces like glass, plastics, metals, and varnished wood. Porous materials like paper, untreated wood, cardboard, sponges and fabric, should be avoided. So then how, you may ask, can artists paint with alcohol inks on cotton canvas? Priming a Canvas with KILZ 2® LATEX KILZ 2® LATEX is a fast drying, water-based, multi-purpose primer, sealer, and stain-blocker. Because it seals porous surfaces, it's a great way to transform a porous canvas into a non-porous one. To avoid noticeable brush strokes, I prefer to use a foam brush, which you can find in all different sizes at Blick or craft store of your choice. I prefer to use the widest brush I can find, and after applying the first coat, I like to run over it with a clean and dry foam brush to make sure the surface is 100% smooth and that minimal brush marks peak through. As long as the surface of the canvas is no longer visible (I like to coat the sides, too!), a second coat of primer should not be necessary; I do encourage you to use your judgment though. You can also prime wooden panels with KILZ, but in this case, you will likely want to apply several coats to make the surface more opaque. Looking to prime a black canvas? You’ll need KILZ Klear. Once you've finished coating your surface, I recommend letting it sit for about 30 to 45 minutes before you begin painting with your inks. Do not start painting if the canvas is not completely dry. Click here to purchase foam brushes. Need canvases? I recommend shopping for them here. Want to know which alcohol ink products I use? Where Can I Buy KILZ 2® LATEX? You can find KILZ 2® LATEX at any hardware store, but it's also available in-store and online at Home Depot or Lowes. How Do I Clean Up and Dispose of KILZ 2® LATEX? KILZ recommends cleaning up equipment and paint splatters with warm, soapy water, but it's important that you properly dispose of the container in accordance with federal, state and local regulations. They recommend calling 1-800-CLEANUP to learn how to recycle or properly dispose of your primer. Want to Learn More About Alcohol Inks? Share this blog post with your friends on Pinterest!
