The woman with the shock of dyed red hair, her body wrapped in a fur coat, and a pet monkey grinning and holding tight to her neck was Anita Berber. She danced across the foyer of the Adlon Hotel opened her sable coat and revealed her lustrous naked body underneath. Men leered, goggle-eyed. Women giggled or turned their heads in shock and embarrassment. Anita Berber didn’t care. She liked to shock. She liked the attention. If she didn’t get it, she would shout and throw empty bottles or glasses on the floor. Smash! Berber was a dancer, an actor, a writer, and a model. She was called the “Goddess of the Night,” the “Priestess of Debauchery,” the very symbol of Weimar decadence, and a drug-addled degenerate. She was all these things and more. And during her brief life, Berber utterly scandalized Berlin during the 1920s. Not an easy task! The daughter of two musicians, Anita Berber was born in Dresden in 1899. Her parents divorced when she was young, Berber was then raised by her grandmother. By sixteen, she quit the family home for the unpredictable life as a dancer in cabaret shows. Vintage postcard. Collection: Didier Hanson. Anita Berber and Sebastian Droste Expressionistic dancer and film actress Anita Berber (1899–1928) challenged many taboos during the Weimar period. With her drug and booze addiction and her bisexual affairs, she epitomized the decadence of 1920s Berlin. Her charcoaled eyes, her black lipstick and bright red, bobbed hair were featured on a famous portrait of her by Otto Dix and in silent films by Richard Oswald and Fritz Lang. Not so much the painting itself but the title which describes Rée’s life looking for who she was and where she came from and what this meant. … Continue reading "Anita Rée: The Lutheran Jewish Artist Deemed ‘Degenerate’ by the Nazis"

Anita Jeram Perhaps once in every generation an artist will stamp their personality onto a book and the book will become as much loved for its illustrations as its words. Many of our greatest Children’s Classics have been born in this way. When we think of Alice in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll 1865) we always imagine …

Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York, was a literal hot-spot for revelers in the 1940s - and remains so today. Decades ago, one could spend the day on fair rides, eating hot dogs for less than 25 cents.
