A Zen Buddhist sensibility is incorporated into a weekend home on Arizona’s scenic Mogollon Rim
Went to a family wedding in Santa Fe last weekend. We decided to drive from LA with the intention of detouring to see the incredible Anasazi ruins at Canyon De Chelly (pronounced "Shay") on the Navajo Reservation in northeastern Arizona. The day before I left LA, it was beautiful. In fact the temperature had been in the 100s the prior weekend. But did I bother to check a weather forecast for Arizona and New Mexico prior to my trip? Of course not. The wind started blowing at Barstow, but it was still relatively warm. By the time we got to Flagstaff, it was in the low 50s with snow forecast for elevations above 6500 feet. The heaviest coat I had was a light jacket -- not much help against the gale force winds and 36 degree dawn that greeted me Friday in Chinle. And don't even get me started on the rain, sleet, and snow that pelted my face, while I did my best to keep the camera dry. Anyway, my plan had been to hike down the 1.4 mile trail to see White House Ruins up close; the only ruin you can see without a Navajo guide. But said weather conditions put the kibosh on that plan and we only stayed up on the rim. These ruins, some of the oldest in the canyon, were built around 1060 A.D. and abandoned about 1275 A.D. No one really knows where or why the Anasazi people (Navajo for the "Ancient Ones") left. The ruins get their name from the fact that the upper structure's front wall is plastered in a lighter shade of sandstone than the rest. In its heyday, approximately 50-60 men, women, and children lived here. There were some periods when the clouds broke and the light played on the sheer 800 foot sandstone cliffs -- a fantastic light show. Hope some of those shots reflect the sheer magnificance of place when I get a chance to post them. I certainly will go back at a later date and take a Jeep tour. What an amazing place -- but you'd never know it from the nondescript high desert country that surrounds it. Reached Explore #56 on Friday, October 24, 2008 -- thank you all!
