My daughter has always loved animals. I remember taking her to see Old Macdonald's farm in Freeport Fleetwood a few years ago and there were some lovely animals. It was such a fun day out and we had the best time.

This is a beautiful December project that yields gorgeous results. I give my Grade 7 - 9 students the choice to do something holiday-themed or any subject matter they want. See my original posting HERE. They sketch their stained glass design on regular 8 1/2 x 11" photocopy paper. They each have their own laptop so find images to reference online. Then slide the finished drawing into a sheet protector and trace over all the lines with a permanent black marker- make the lines nice and thick as these will be the 'lead' lines. Then colour in the whole picture using coloured permanent markers. After one class (80 minutes). For the background, cut a cereal box the same size as the page protector image and cut it out. Cover it in glue stick and then wrap it in crumpled up aluminum foil. Finally. cut out the sheet protector and staple it to the foil covered cardboard. Sometimes we use washi tape or coloured tape to wrap the edges. Depending on the brand, though, it can peel off the plastic unfortunately. Some Grade 7 - 9 finished pieces. These photos don't convey how stunning these are in person, especially when the light catches them!!

Create a pretty holiday-themed art project using colored paper, marker and chalk pastel for the sleigh bells and colored paper and white tempera paint
Last week and this week, third grade was busy getting ready for their music program, so they needed to practice during specials. (which is fine, just gets us off schedule a bit :) Today we were able to get back on a regular schedule, and were able to start this neat little Christmas picture. I wish we had more time to spend on it, but they were able to complete quite a bit in a 45 min class. (I found this lesson on the Color Like You Mean It blog!) Materials Black Tru-Ray construction paper Crayola oil pastels (green, light green, brown, gold, silver) 90 lb paper 4x6" tracing circles pencils, scissors, glue First, we started off with the painting in hopes that it might be dry enough to cut, by the time they finished their background. I demonstrated how to leave a curved part white so that it looks shiny, and to paint the other side darker to create the look of a shadow. We just used the Jack Richeson semi-moist tempera cakes. We'll try liquid watercolor next time. They trace 3 or 4 circles, and begin to paint. After they're finished painting their circles, they can start on their background of evergreen tree branches. They use their Crayola oil pastels to draw 3 or 4 brown twigs first. Then, they use green and light green to make the pine needles. I remind them we're not making Charlie Brown Christmas tree branches! When they are finished with the branches, they can use the gold or silver to create ornament toppers and hooks, to hook them to the branches. A few of them had time to cut out their ornaments and glue them on. Here are some finished products! Great job friends! Thanks for the inspiration Color it like you mean it! “Lauren Stacey is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com.”
This lesson is definitely one of my biggest hits (I'll have to come out with a 'Best of Mrs. Nguyen' blog post one day)! :) Fourth graders began by reviewing what they already knew about value (the element of art). Afterwards they began working on their art projects. To begin students glued down a piece of olive green yarn to a 12"x18" piece of black paper. The only stipulations I gave them was that it should start from the left end of the paper, reach all the way to the right end, and should make some sort of interesting line (so not just a straight one). Then we put those up in the drying rack. Next students took a light bulb tracer that I had created from a die-cut I had from last year and traced it onto a piece of 6"x18" black paper (most students traced between 4-6). Once all their bulbs were traced in pencil, they used oil pastels to outline and then color them in. Once they colored them in, they used their fingers to smudge/rub in the oil pastel (this gives is a smoother, more glass-like implied texture). Then using a white oil pastel, they drew in the filament (again they could create any kind of curvy/wavy line they wanted). Once it was drawn in, they used their "tickle finger" to rub the white from their filament back-and-forth slightly into the color of the bulb (this creates a glowing effect). Then they re-outline their filaments with white again. Finally a highlight is added to the tip of their bulb with white oil pastel. The next step for students is to cut their light bulbs out and arrange them onto their larger black paper with the yarn on it. Once they are happy with the arrangement, they trace the outline of the bulb in pencil onto their black paper. To create a glowing effect on the paper, we used chalk pastel to create an outline (slightly inside the pencil line) with white and then with the color used for the bulb, and then made quick finger-strokes to spread the chalk pastel outwards. Once they are done creating the glow effect, students use a glue stick to apply glue to the back of their light bulb, and then position it on top of the chalk pastel glow. The results are simply stunning. :) If you are interested in a more descriptive lesson plan with step-by-step visuals and light bulb templates, check out my store. Mrs. White's 2nd grade class Isaac detail ---------------Mrs. Warne's 2nd grade class (Kayla, N.N., Ashley & Zobia) ----------------- Mrs. Fortner's 2nd grade class Cut out house shape from brown paper. I folded mine in half before I cut to get the outside symmetrical. You could use a pattern for younger students. Use crayons to decorate house. Include door, window, trees, or candy. Almost completed house.... Use crayons (blue & white) to draw snowflakes & wind onto blue paper. Glue blue and white paper backgrounds together and house centered on top. Adding brown scribble shading around decorative elements, it adds depth to house (for advanced artist). Side note; I have a fear of combining glitter with children (lol) but am considering buying sequin circles or glitter glue to add small amounts of pizazz to the art. Stretched out cotton balls could also be added coming out of chimney or onto roof. Have fun ;) Merry Christmas.
