Yesterday, while heading back uphill after walking little Mr. down to school, my wee Bloom and I passed a great big tree with lovely little pinecones strewn about beneath. It made me think of this project. Of course we had to stop... And pick up more pinecones! I left the sack of pinecones in the kitchen, and look who came out to visit with our new pinecone friends!? In honor of this happy pinecone day, I am re-posting this pinecone gnome tutorial, just for you! ORIGINALLY POSTED DECEMBER 11, 2011 I was walking through the garden with my wee Bloom this morning and heard a small rustling of leaves. Our attention was drawn down to the roots of a great pine tree. Nestled among the roots, pine needles and fallen leaves were these two little fellows, doing their best disguise themselves among the pinecones. The two little gnomes squeaked in terror when they realized they'd been spotted, but after my wee Bloom and I knelt down and assured them we meant no harm, they invited a third friend to join them. Introductions were made with a "How do you do, and a how do you do, and a how do you do, again..." (the gnomes in my garden are, apparently, very formal little fellows!) We talked about the weather, the fallen leaves and the migrating birds. Then our new friends said they must be on their way to help the local squirrels hunt a few last acorns, so we parted ways with a very formal "Hope to see you, and a hope to see you, and a hope to see you again soon!" And I'm sure we shall... If you would like to see some pine-cone gnomes in your garden, you'll want to find some smallish pinecones and 1-inch wooden beads with 3/8th inch holes like these. As you can see, I made a simple pattern for the hats out of newsprint... These hats are about 2 1/2 inches high. To help the little gnomes balance, you may want to cut some feet from matching felt and glue them to the bottoms of the pine-cones. One of my pine-cones was still a little wobbly so I reinforced the felt base with a piece of cardboard (and if your pine-cones are really wobbly, you can add some weight by gluing a penny to the base...) If you want your gnomes to have mittens, you can cut 3 inch lengths of pipe-cleaner, run a line of glue along the center 2 inches and then place it in among the bristles through the middle of your pine-cone. Leave an inch, or so, of the ends of your pipe cleaner sticking out in front to form two arms. Then glue your bead to the top of the pine-cone, glue the hat to the top of the wooden bead and mittens to the ends of the pipe-cleaner arms. Finally, if you wish, you can paint or draw little faces. For these gnomes I used colored pencils to draw the faces, and I think it worked out nicely. Don't you? Dear Readers: Did you know that, even if you "Like" we bloom here and/or Making Peg Dolls on Facebook, you may not be seeing updates and messages from me in your Facebook feed? Did you know that you might be missing tutorials for lovely, quick-to-whip-up gifts? Missing information about the upcoming blog tour? About book give-aways, and other give-aways? Here's what you can do so you don't miss anything: once you’ve liked the we bloom here and/or the Making Peg Dolls page (thank you!), use the dropdown menu right under the “liked” button to select “get notifications,” or "see first" in your news feed. This lets Facebook know, going forward, that you really do want to know when I've posted a new tutorial, give-away, and other assorted nonsense. Another way you can hear from me is to have a look at the right-hand sidebar of this blog, and find the widget which allows you to "follow by email." Once you've typed in your email, you will get notifications delivered directly to your inbox. I don't have access to information about who signs up for email through my blog, so there is no way I could add you to some list and send you junk-mail (not that I would ever consider doing such an annoying thing anyhow, I promise). Thanks for visiting! Please say "hi" any time -- I love hearing from you. xo mb

Minne-Mama is on Facebook! 'Like' us to stay updated on our fun crafts and activities! Thank you for stopping by! I love using contact paper with children. At one childcare center I worked at, we used it all the time. I picked up a roll to use with Skyler, knowing that I wanted to create a play activity on the glass sliding door in our dining room. As we were making the hand print wreaths, I knew exactly how to incorporate the contact paper with another 'decoration' for the holidays. I was able to prepare all of the materials during Skyler's nap, and we played with it when he woke up. It has been a lot of fun, and is getting more filled every day. It is definitely something that Skyler likes to go back to often. For this activity I measured the contact paper to the height of the door, then traced out the shape I wanted, adding some green around the outside to make it look like a Christmas tree. I rolled the cut shape it in the opposite direction so it would flatten out a bit before taping the non-stick side to the door. I taped the star and trunk onto the door and we were ready to play! All of the components of the tree, with the exception of the trunk (which was made with orange construction paper and brown crayon). We used the pom poms for awhile, but Skyler did not like them as much, so we have just been using the foam circles. I set this up as Skyler slept and just peeled off the paper to reveal the sticky side when he woke up! He was so excited in his first moments playing with the tree. Starting to fill up! I cut the circles for the tree ornaments and the star from sheets of foam. Skyler enjoyed just playing with the foam pieces as well, trying to stick them to his shirt like he normally does with stickers. He now realizes that the foam pieces have to go on the tree to stick. This is the most recent look for the contact paper tree. Skyler still goes back frequently and puts on new ornaments, or takes off and repositions already stuck pieces. I especially like the tree because it is both a fun fine motor activity for Skyler to play with and a festive decoration that can be seen inside and outside of our home!

I really had fun working on my latest project…my French sheet music Christmas candles! I love the vintage look and the warm little glow that they are adding to my Christmas decorations this year! And…they were easy and inexpensive to create. In fact, I didn’t spend a penny to make them! This one has a star cut out for the tealight to peep through… …and this one was simply wrapped in the sheet music with the leftover cutouts from the star candle being used as a fun tag! And this one sports a Christmas tree design! And I bet you already have on hand most of what you need to make them! Here is what you will need: Glass jars in assorted sizes Printouts on regular printer paper of French sheet music found at The Graphics Fairy here Rubber cement Jute twine Tealights Matte finish tape Scissors Evergreens and berries to trim (optional) And here is what you will do for the candles with cutouts: Cut the sheet music to fit the jars. I used two lengths, back-to-back, for the jars with the cutouts. To create the cutouts, simply fold the sheets in half across the short side and cut out your pattern. Note: I practiced first on plain paper until I got the cutout the size that I wanted it to be. Unfold your sheet and you will see a whole star or tree. If you are uncomfortable cutting your own, you will find quite a few shapes online. Next, glue the two sheets together with rubber cement. It’s a great adhesive to use with paper since it doesn’t wrinkle and you can simply roll it with your finger to remove the excess. Wrap the sheets around the jar and secure with matte tape. Wrap jute twine around the mouth of the jar several times and tie. You can add evergreens or berries if you wish. Insert your tealight and light with a long match…or use a battery-operated tealight if you prefer. For the candles without the cutouts: Cut one layer of the paper, wrap it around the jar and secure with matte tape. Note: You only want one layer of the sheet music for this one so that the candlelight will glow through the paper. Wrap jute twine around the mouth of the jar several times and tie. You can add evergreens or berries if you wish. The cutouts from the other candles can be glued back-to-back to reinforce them, then punch a small hole and thread them on the twine. Insert your tealight and light with a long match…or use a battery-operated tealight if you prefer. And here they are…so fun and easy…and you can’t beat free! I've already planned where they will go. I am still working on my Christmas decorations and I can’t wait for you to see them! Can you tell I am going for a vintage-y, French look this year? And here are a few more fun things that you can create with sheet music…wreaths, candles and ornaments! Be sure to get a closer look at my sheet music decorations and check out the tutorials by clicking here! And for more Christmas-y fun with jars, here are my Mason jar Christmas candles! You can see how I made them here! But Baby Kitty says forget the decorations! It’s waaaay too cold here for November and he’s just going to sit by the fire!
