"No one will play with me" he said with tears rolling down his cheeks. He seems so confused by this strange occurrence, he thought going to preschool would mean lots of friends to play with.
First, let me say, that I feel really fortunate to be able to write about the little one's new work and play spaces. As a Montessori guide, over the last few years of my parenting journey, I've had to reconsile...

I love Autumn, it's the season that just makes me so very happy. While many people view Spring as a time of renewal and growth, for me, Fall is the time of year that I feel moved to make changes in our environment, especially our home. Perhaps it's the feeling that we'll be spending much more of our time indoors in the upcoming months that moves me to bring fresh energy into our rooms. I envision our home to be warm and nourishing. I want it to be our haven of comfort in the cold of winter and the bustle of the holidays. So I've been spending some time the past few weeks moving things around, putting things aside and finding new homes for items whose time of usefulness has passed for us. Our dining room is the heart of our home. As well as being the place where our family shares our meals, it is also the place where the boys play the most. It holds the cabinet for art supplies, shelves for toys and my favorite part of the room, the Autumn Corner. As Ivan still steadfastly refuses to let me lazure the walls my favorite Waldorf Kindergarten colors (harumph!), I've dyed playsilks to use as backdrops. I actually made this bookshelf myself and I love that it now holds my boys playthings :) There is a story shelf with a few of our favorite wooden figures that the boys use to imagine tales of knights and wizards. The shelf below holds the household items, a machine and a basket of small playsilks to "sew" with and the knitted food for the play kitchen. On the opposite wall is the boys kitchen with our favorite pressed leaves hanging as a garland Another area of the dining room holds a small bookshelf to place toy baskets and a few art supplies The boys have enjoyed the new energy in the room. Matteo loves to sit and draw, Nico makes his imaginary skyscrapers with his blocks and Luca is always busy in the little kitchen. I really love that the room is the gathering place for our small tribe :). Happy Autumn to All!

Look at me: Rocking my velcro KangaRoo sneakers with the little pocket on the side, homemade terrycloth jumper shorts that my mom made me, and my little blond mop of a haircut looking like a total 80's kid. Last night, my daughter and I piled up on the couch under the electric blanket to watch the new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. It was an adventure story about Kansas City Mickey and his quest to find an archaic tomb shaped like mouse ears. After going through a series of educational places on his map, he ends up at his final destination and breaks open to tomb door to find an "ancient machine" called a record player. Kansas City Mickey goes on to explain how this "old time" contraption was used to play music to people who are now basically fossils... "Mommy what is that thing??!!" Of course this got me to thinking... (because you know, what doesn't right?) I loved playing records with my mom when I was a little girl. Our record player was attached to our 8 track player, and we had red headphones that were way too big for my head that I would hold onto while dancing around to old Beatles LPs. I remember my first visit to a glorious place called Tape World (!!!) just a few short years later with my big sister: It's a shame that our kids will never know the correlation between these two things: Did you ever drink Tang? Did you ever write "Class of (insert your graduation year here) ROX!" on your Trapper Keeper? Put blue eye shadow on your Pound Puppy? Trade Lisa Frank stickers? Read Flowers in the Attic or Sweet Valley High from your school's bookmobile and have to sign your name for it on one of these? Then get points for it with the Book It! program to trade into a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut? Did you learn most of what happens during puberty through Degrassi Jr High episodes, burn the tips of your fingers on your Easy Bake oven, wear L.A. Gear sneakers with your Z-Cavaricci jeans and your brown leather bomber jacket sporting your Swatch Watch while applying your Bonne Bell flavored chapstick? Did you throw Koosh balls at your siblings while fighting over your Light Bright and keep all your fingernail polish in your hot pink and purple Kaboodle? Did you spend hours playing with a water ring toss game that you could NEVER win? Or get super excited for the day in gym class when they busted out the giant parachute? Or practice spelling your name on a Magic Slate? Or hide in your closet with the lights off making your Gyro Wheel spin? Did you drink Clearly Canadian? Collect Weebles? Munch on PB Max? Constantly lose your led pieces to your Push-a-Point pencils? Learn how to use a calculator from the Little Professor? Did all the commercials you saw while watching You Can't Do That On Television convince you that you had to have every Wildlife Treasury card? Did you drink Burples and then use them as bath toys? Did you lay in your bed with your scrunch socks on flipping through YM magazine and talking to your friends on a see through phone? Did you spray Ex'cla*ma'tion! perfume on your Cabbage Patch Kid while crimping your hair and listening to Mr. Mister? Do you remember how hard it was to get your Popple in the right shape? Remember how we all tried to eat Pop Rocks and drink Coke (Or Crystal Clear Pepsi) to see if we'd explode? Remember how hard it was to not trip over your Skip it? Or how difficult it was to stay on your Pogo Ball? Did your sister ever lock you in Mayor McCheese jail as you wiped your tears on your Hypercolor t-shirt and swore you were going to flush her Snoopy Sno-Cone maker down the toilet when you got home? Did you watch Troop Beverly Hills a thousand times during your slumber parties and fight over who had the most Troll Dolls? Or play Zork on your Commodore 64 computer? Or have to sit through film strips in school while chomping on your Big League Chew thinking of last night's Alf episode? Or watch Just The Ten Of Us while playing with your Fraggle Rock toys? Did you wear banana clips in your hair when you were playing Heads Up 7-Up during recess because it was raining outside? Did you learn how to fold notes 12 different ways to write to your best friends and sign them all "L-Y-L-A-S"? It really is a shame that all these things are relics stuck in an antique world... Because man! Those were the days....

The idea that children are persons was so important to Charlotte Mason that she began her educational philosophy with it. But what does it mean in practice?

Inside you’ll find: How kids benefit from sensory activities and why every adult should take the time and effort to make sensory play a priority. Pure terror. Eye rolls. Blank stares. I’ve seen all these reactions when I mention sensory bins or sensory play activities. I get it. They take time and effort. They can [...]
40+ Gift Ideas Made by Kids
When I was a little girl, play time was usually all about being a mommy. I never played lawyer and can't talk about those times playing doctor. I loved dolls, playing house or going to the pretend store. I have all my old dolls, they are pretty scary and hidden under my bed. Any with curly hair got a hair cut. The play food was really tiny back then too. If I'd of eaten that size portion all my life there would never have been any discussions with my thighs about their girth. I think I need to find an old armoire and convert it into a play store like this one from Inspired Whims.... For the past year I've been pinning ideas to my Kid Stuff Pinterest board of cute play kitchens, with the intention of making one for a certain 3 year old. I think the collection of ideas on my board is PDC.... pretty darn cute. My kid stuff board is a favorite, right up there with the Junkers United board and my Creative Furniture board. This kitchen from Holly at Life as a Thrifter convinced me that whatever version I decide on, it MUST have a fridge. At every thrift store or garage sale last summer, I eyed up old entertainment centers and night stands wondering if they fit the bill for my vision of conversion. This nightstand redo from Bubblestitch Quilts inspired me to look for a similar nightstand. I found two at a garage sale and if I go this route I will challenge myself to fit in every feature I really like, just on a smaller scale. A window in the oven is also on my list of must haves. Gail at My Repurposed Life worked on her play kitchen below till she had it just how she wanted it. She used several pieces of furniture and combined them in this build. Is that fantastic or what?!?! You guys can laugh at me, but..... I think I want a career in building/upcycling old furniture into play kitchens. I love them all. The one below is from a Hungarian blog, Szentpyr . So cute! While those are some of my favorite kitchens, the one most likely to be built before summer is this outdoor one from Prodigal Pieces...... I'm a mud pie maker from way back, and not only would a certain 3 year old be thrilled to whip up some muddy entrees, but a certain 6 year old would likely join her to wallow in the mud. When I saw that counter of mud pie making awesomeness my first thought was WHY OH WHY didn't I think of that years ago! I absolfreakinglutely love it! I think we will have to keep it by the hose for a quick rinse off of bodies and utensils. I've even added metal ware to my list of items to hunt down at garage sales. If you want to pin any of these please go to the original source, most of them will also have tutorials on how they were made so you can whip one up for your certain 3 and 6 year olds. So which style gets your vote? Subscribe, Bliss Ranch arrives magically!
