There's a good chance I'm in some other orbit right now because what tonight's Big Bang Theory did was so epic, so amazing, so out of this world, that my brain pretty much exploded and sent me shooting straight up Sheldon and Leonard's elevator shaft into some other planet. Truthfully, I don't even know if that makes sense, but who cares because we have much more pressing matters to get to—mainly Bernadette's Miss California Quizno's 1999 pageant past, Amy's colonial fan fiction (who else immediately thought, American Girl doll Kirsten?), and Stephen Hawking's surprise cameo as Sheldon's bully. I emailed with Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) immediately after I watched tonight's episode ahead of time to get her take on this ground-breaking moment. Glamour: You were so brilliant as the Quiznos beauty pageant contestant! How long were you in hair and makeup? Melissa Rauch: Thank you so much! Other than the Smurf costume, that was the longest I've been in hair and makeup on Big Bang...close to three hours. It took a village just to hold my head straight so I didn't tip over from the weight of the hair. Glamour: Haha. I'd like to think that shooting that scene might have

Long before photographers like Bill Cunningham and The Sartorialist were documenting street style, photographer Edward Linley Sambourne captured the Edwardian fashion of the city's affluent Kensington neighborhood.
I have good reason to be grateful to Edward Linley Sambourne. My original post about his street photography (Street Style 1906) has been the most popular single item on this blog and has brought in…

While in Copenhagen, a day trip to Hillerod, Denmark is a must! Frederiksborg Castle and its gardens are certainly worth visiting, as is the town center.
People ask me a lot how it’s going on The Big Bang Theory this season. We are about eight episodes into the seventh season, and I barely remember what these episodes have been about! I learn scripts week to week, and once I have to learn the next one, I pretty much forget the […]

Happy birthday, Annie Oakley! Sure, it was yesterday, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still celebrate. I don’t know about you, but Annie Oakley is one of those people who I hear a lot about and then when I really think about, it I don’t know that much about her. Well, unsurprisingly, she is awesome,
Popular in the UK long before the mediocre film franchise, Rowan Atkinson's Mr. Bean character has found new life on the internet. That is, mostly by way of his face being super-imposed onto babies and supermodels.
over the years, many people (online and off) have asked me who my style icons are. i don’t really like idol/hero/celebrity culture, and so i’ve always managed to avoid answering the que…

. . . and this monday was not like most, for we awoke early [not unlike most], but instead of the office, we drove to the beach — coffees and almond croissants and sand and early spring sunshine — and afterwards, took the rest of this holiday monday off, for doing whatever took our fancy, including early evening in the garden, among the daffodils, breathing in the magic of springtime . . . Since I'm away at the beach, I figured it was a good time to show some seaside cottages. Not the Newport variety, but actual cottages. The book 'Cottages by the Sea' by Linda Leigh Paul features a number of amazing cottages in Carmel, California. I had 2 favorites that I want to share with you. The house seen at the top images of the post is called 'Hansel' -aptly named, don't you think? The street side is a quiet, almost fairy-tale cottage. The handmade quality of the finishes just adds to the charm. The designer, Hugh Comstock, designed the place in a folk tudor style to showcase his wive's 'Otsy-Totsy' dolls in 1924 to show to potential buyers as they had overflowed their own home. The interior is small at 300 SF but adorable. Efficient little beach cottage perfect for 1 or 2! I love the soaring ceiling. Thats a guest loft up the ladder from the living room. Less of a cottage than a small house, the second project is more my speed to actually live in. I love this house! The Hasenyager House was built in 1931 by MJ Murphy in a French Tudor style and was restored in 1987.The house, typical of the time period, features forest-green painted steel windows. You know I love those! I especially love this large rounded bay window in the living room seen above and below. The garden is divided into 'rooms' and features a treasure trove of plants - roses, lupine, forget-me-nots, wisteria, iris, rhododendrons, lilacs, lavendar and rare trees. A perfect cottage garden! The interiors are still cozy but not as tiny as the hansel house. I love the wood floors and beams. The kitchen is obviously from the 1987 remodel but I don't mind it -the white cabinets and appliances are very beachy and I love the addition of the beautiful rugs and blue cabinet. This is a book that is definitely worth checking out!

In the 1960's, Yé Yé was a movement in France mostly based on youth and pop music being produced at the time. The term derived from "Yeah Yeah" and was a reaction to Mod in England and Rock 'n' Roll and Girl Groups popular in the States. Pulled by Svengali strings, most notably, from famed

In looking through my sets I realized that I have not posted as many carte de visites as other types of photographs. I made a quick run though a box of cdvs and scanned several. I will post them over the next few days. At a Maryland antique show many years ago we found a large collection of photographs of 19th century actresses and show girls. Many had names of the women or the shows in which they appeared written on them in the same hand. We have always assumed that they were a collection put together by a fan of the theatre in the 19th century. Some of these have already been posted and today I am adding two more. This young woman with bright eyes and wonderfully tousled hair is Rosina Vokes, comedienne, entertainer, and business woman. She was a member of a theatrical family that included two sisters, Jessie and Victoria, a brother, Frederick Mortimer, and an "honorary" brother, Fawdon. They were the children of a theatrical costumier. They were popular in the London pantomime theaters in the 1870s. A Wikipedia page on the family: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vokes_family sctatepdx has kindly linked to another article on the Vokes: www.its-behind-you.com/vokes.html It says that Rosina was the "the cleverest of them all".
