I’m incredibly glad that I have finally got around to reading some of the Atwood novels that have been gathering dust on my shelves for years. Lady Oracle, The Handmaid’s Tale, and now Alias Grace …
I am often asked, "how did you get into apologetics?" For some believers, they'll get interested in apologetics because of a crisis of faith. ...
A dystopian novel about a travelling theatre troupe in a future where the world has become a barren wasteland.
As lofty as it sounds to devote an entire summer to reading Infinite Jest or War and Peace (in the original Russian), some of us should probably come to terms with the fact that we’re not that kind of reader. We consume our news in digestible sound…

I love sewing, but there are stages in every project that can be tedious. Stuffing a softie, for example, or pressing seams open. When faced with these tasks it’s easy to make an excuse to set the project aside and go get a snack, or check Facebook, or really do anything but finish the... Read More »
About Hello Beautiful (Oprah’s Book Club) NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • MORE THAN ONE MILLION COPIES SOLD! From the author of Dear Edward comes a “powerfully affecting” ( People ) family story that asks: Can love make a broken person whole? “Another tender tearjerker . . . Napolitano chronicles life’s highs and lows with aching precision.”— The Washington Post ONE OF THE CHICAGO PUBLIC LIBRARY’S TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times Book Review, NPR, The Washington Post, Time, Vogue, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, New York Post, She Reads, Bookreporter William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all. With the Padavanos, William experiences a newfound contentment; every moment in their house is filled with loving chaos. But then darkness from William’s past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia’s carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters’ unshakeable devotion to one another. The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations. Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most? An exquisite homage to Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classic, Little Women , Hello Beautiful is a profoundly moving portrait of what is possible when we choose to love someone not in spite of who they are, but because of it.
This is the one time you should judge a book by its cover.

I've made no secret of the fact that Elly Griffiths is one of my favorite authors. This coming Thursday, you'll be able to read my review of her latest book, The Stranger Diaries. Therefore, it will come as no surprise that I was thrilled to discover that her next Dr. Ruth Galloway mystery will be released in the UK next February. (Yes, I love Griffiths so much that I usually buy the UK editions of her books.) Let's see what this latest book is all about, shall we? (And if you haven't read any of the books in this marvelous series yet, I strongly suggest that you begin at the beginning with The Crossing Places because the lives of this fantastic cast of characters are every bit as absorbing as the mysteries!) Available in the UK 7 February 2019! Synopsis: "DCI Nelson has been receiving threatening letters telling him to 'go to the stone circle and rescue the innocent who is buried there'. He is shaken, not only because children are very much on his mind, with Michelle's baby due to be born, but because although the letters are anonymous, they are somehow familiar. They read like the letters that first drew him into the case of The Crossing Places, and to Ruth. But the author of those letters is dead. Or are they? Meanwhile, Ruth is working on a dig in the Saltmarsh - another henge, known by the archaeologists as the stone circle - trying not to think about the baby. Then bones are found on the site and identified as those of Margaret Lacey, a twelve-year-old girl who disappeared thirty years ago. As the Margaret Lacey case progresses, more and more aspects of it begin to hark back to that first case of The Crossing Places, and to Scarlett Henderson, the girl Nelson couldn't save. The past is reaching out for Ruth and Nelson, and its grip is deadly." I can't wait to read The Stone Circle! How about you? oOo In case you prefer the US edition of the book, it will be available on this side of the pond on May 7, 2019!
The following list of questions is meant to aid authors of fantasy fiction who are seeking to create believable imaginary settings for their stories. While many of these questions may be helpful or crucial to certain stories, they will not all apply to every story. It is not necessary for an author to answer all, or even any, of the questions in order to start writing, (or to finish writing, either). The idea is simply to provoke people into thinking about the ways their settings and backgrounds hang together … or don't. If it's useful, use it. If not, don't.
Are you interested in writing a trilogy? From The Lord of the Rings to The Hunger Games and beyond, it’s plain to see that trilogies stand the test of time among readers. But writing a trilogy? Well, that can be tough! A good trilogy must hook readers and keep them engaged, maintain good paci
While the film got many things right, it also got a few things wrong — and there’s a major reason why Michael himself doesn’t like the movie.
The books that will move you, inspire you, make you cry, make you think, make you laugh. Even if you read them in high school or college, you'll have a different perspective on them now that you're Out In The World. (Trust me.)
