Hi, all! Fall is almost upon us, and with it the start of the "quilting season" - and if your scraps are piling up as much as mine are, you're looking for some great ideas for using them up! So today I'm sharing some inspiration shots - maybe they'll help get your creative juices flowing! I know they've helped mine. Most of today's quilts have a definite theme - strings and strips! Skinny little strips - and lots of them! I love the section of vertical strips in this quilt! And isn't this diagonal quilt pretty? The grey strips tie the whole thing together.... And I love this one for so many reasons -the brights, and those little side columns of multiple widths! And here's a use for those bonus HSTs! This one is really made unique by its quilting style - it gives it so much movement! And then there are these two - I love the multiple boxes, and it's so different in the two different color ways! You can see all of these and more on my Pinterest board, Oh Scrap! which will take you to the original sites for each quilt. Have fun! Hugs! Sarah

This is a doll quilt (or little wall hanging) I made, using a folded log cabin pattern. Oscar our Dachshund, was thinking about joining my doll I guess! It is also often called: the 'Manx log cabin', originated from the Isle of Man. Fiona of this blog post here wrote a very clear tutorial and nice story of it's history, worth reading! I added a practical little step to this tutorial. Like a regular log cabin you start with a square and add strips of fabric in a chosen width. Only before stitching the next strip, you fold the sewn strip back (mostly 2/3 of the width, minus the seam allowance). So far the same tutorial like Fiona's. What I did to make it easier to iron the fold in the strip is: I used a template (made out of a cereal box) with the desired width. In my case my strips were cut to 3,5 cm (very narrow, you would prefer to make wider strips). After sewing with a 0,5 cm seam allowance, 3 cm was left. 2/3 of 3 cm is 2 cm. So the width of the fold is 2 cm as is the template is. Here the fold is ironed down and you can take a peak under the fold. a few blocks done There is no need to quilt this, which I think is a great advantage! To join the blocks you work like a quilt as you go method ( just picked a clear tutorial by Leanne and Marci with pictures) only in this case you don't have to worry about the batting. The things I learned is to: 1st pay attention with what thread you sew, because it shows on the back. Secondly how you start and stop your sewing line, this will also show. And thirdly only sew the logs length without the seam allowances at the beginning and the end (like in the improvised drawing above). I'm referring to the last rows because this will make it easier to sew the blocks together. Sewing the background squares together I chose to do this by hand, probably the only method without sewing all through the front. The little quilt is finished with a little binding. I used mostly woven fabrics and linens. Also lots of Japanese woven fabric scraps. I love the feeling of all these types of fabrics, lots of texture! I first saw an old quilt with this pattern at a friends house in Maryland (USA). Her family called it: 'a toe catcher log cabin', a funny name, I think, but very understandable if you look at all those folds! Oscar thinking: She smells nice...may be I could try something here.... Me talking to Oscar: I know it seems tempting but you are not going to fit in there as well..... Enjoy your week, GroetjesAnnemieke

I made a Colorwash of exclusively Kaffe Fassett fabrics many of which are early and out of print. It is not the Kaffe Collective which includes fabric by Brandon Mably and Philip Jacobs. It is exclusively Kaffe. This wallhanging is made from the kit of 2.5" squares that will be offered to students of Colorwash 360. I used one of the larger prints on the back and I thought the black Fern print was perfect for the binding. Are you interested in making a Colorwash wallhanging too? If you haven't heard, I have an Online Course launching on October 1, 2018 called 'COLORWASH 360'. You'll learn gradation from light to dark (value) as well as gradation from one color another...And, how to select fabrics that work best. 'COLORWASH 360' opens for pre-sale on September 1. Subscribers will receive 24 hours early access to sign up for the course and purchase the limited edition kits of pre-cut squares or larger blocks to cut multiple squares yourself. Both Batik and Kaffe Fassett Fabric kits will be available in limited quantities to students of COLORWASH 360 only. Even since I saw Steffani's St Louis 16 patch quilt on her blog, I have been smitten. I am not sure if it is the richness of the colours, the gorgeous AMH fabrics, the purples (I adore purple!) or what it is, but I knew I wanted to make one too. Source : sewwithsass.blogspot.com I didn't jump on the bandwagon when it was first doing the rounds of Flickr and Instagram as the time wasn't right, but I had the urge to cut into my Chicopee last week. This is one of my favourite Denyse Schmidt ranges and I think it is the rich colours of the reds, the oranges, pinks and blues that just sang to me. I started off with just 4 blocks to see if I liked the look of them. They stitched up so easily. Seriously, Steffani's tutorial is incredibly easy to follow. I mixed the Chicopee with some Hope Valley and some older ranges of DS fabrics that I have been hoarding waiting for the right quilt to come along. I loved the look of these so continued until I had 22. Was going to go for a 5 x 6 layout but it would have been for one mother of a quilt! Will pop the extra 2 on the back. This past weekend one of the guilds I belong to, Empire Quilter's, held their bi-annual show: Urban Inspirations 2011. I was lucky enough to have two quilts in the show. In the Spotlight and A Blaze of Glory. If you remember, these are the same two quilts that were juried into the Mancuso, Virginia Quilt Fest. Well, In the Spotlight won an Honorable Mention, in the Art Quilts category.... WooHoo!!! Blaze of Glory was in the Wall Quilts category... I really chuckled when I read the judges comments, because if you remember I felt kinda bewildered after reading the comments from Va Quilt Fest. But thankfully, these judges gave both compliments as well as suggestions for improvement,... like on Blaze, here are two of the comments: 1) Scale of quilting is perfect for the design of the quilt, and 2) When using flange on a quilt try to make sure it is the same size all around the quilt. Boy, I couldn't agree more and remember considering taking off the binding when I first finished the piece to try and fix the piping. Compare those two comments to the comments from the Va show: 1) Your quilting was all the same size, flattening the otherwise very daring composition., and 2) Like the use of piping. So I guess as the saying goes, take a judges comments for what they are worth and move on :-). And that is what I am going to do. I submitted both of these quilts and a third in another show at the end of April. I don't know if they will be accepted, but it will be interesting to hear what those judges have to say. Anyway, for some reason, the colors and quality of my photos from the show aren't great, so I am only going to share those that are half decent. Enjoy.... I love the beading on this piece. The bodices on the dresses as is the bottom border are hand beaded! The center applique figure is a pattern, which the quilter embellished with bead work. Believe it or not, this was a Kaffe challenge. All the skirts are made from Kaffe fabric. I find this peice visually striking and her detail is exquisite! Too bad I didn't get a close-up so you could appreciate the quilting. Sorry :-) This piece reminds me of many of my doodles, that have yet to be turned into a quilt.... oh well ... The quilting really enhances the effectiveness of this piece. Well hope you enjoyed the show! I have pictures from two more shows that I have to share... AQS Lancaster and Quilt Fest NJ. Since I am traveling, maybe the nights in the hotel room will let me catch up. Cheers!
