I'm back from Los Angeles, and I had a great time! We all survived the speeches that one always has to sit through at a graduation, and then we had fun. We went to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, which was pretty fun. My favorite exhibit there was the sea otters, although I found it gallingly ironic that the exhibit is sponsored by BP. Did you know that a sea otter has as many hairs in one square inch as a German shepherd has on its entire body? The next day we went to the La Brea Tar Pits; this is by far the best thing I've ever done in L.A. after several visits. If you're ever in L.A. and have to choose where you have time to go, definitely do the Tar Pits. I learned a lot there, but my favorite piece of trivia is the scientific name for the saber-toothed cat: Smilodon fatalis. As I had hoped, I got some work done on the placemats for my cousin. Here's the first row: I obviously won't be able to show the full placemats in detail, since I had to lay just the one row diagonally across the scanner, but I promise to show as much as I can. The next row will be the "B" motif done in the Light Wedgewood. The whole thing will be much more stable once the next row is joined. I need to finish unpacking now and get caught up on my blog reading. Can't wait to see what you all did at Tat Days! If all goes as planned, I will get to meet somebody very special tomorrow. Photos to come....

My Motif # 6 is from Judi Banashek's book "Advanced Tatting Patterns". I used white Lizbeth Size 20 thread. Judi is the founder of our Oklahoma Shuttle Bugs tatting group. She is a wonderful teacher and I learned so much from her. A few years ago she moved to Waxahachie, TX to be close to her daughters. Good news! Terry McGuffin gave me permission to post her pattern for the Windmill Snowflake. As soon as I locate it I'll try to figure out a way to post it here.

There are many explanations of and tutorials on how to make twisted picot joins floating through cyberspace. I have decided to add my own explanation because I believe that an AHA moment of understanding can sometimes take more than one explanation or a photograph that clicks with someone. Perhaps this description of the twisted picot join will be helpful... Here is a simple motif which is ready for its final join i.e. twisted picot join. A is the picot by which the final ring will be joined to the beginning ring. B is the stretch of taut thread between the pinch and middle finger which will be joined to A. To make the twisted picot join the motif will be folded along the blue line to bring A into alignment with B. To begin, I am holding the motif in the normal fashion. In this photo the motif has been folded. The back of A is now visible and has been brought close to B. I have inserted my crochet hook into picot A from the underside. Now I turn the crochet hook clockwise to put it into position along the taught thread at B. I'm ready to pick up the thread... And pull the taught thread through the picot to form a loop large enough... For my shuttle to pass through. Don't ask me WHY I used such a big shuttle for such a small motif! My ring needs 5 more DS before closing. I add these now BEFORE unfolding the motif. After the ring's stitches are complete, unfold the motif and make sure the twisted picot join is in fact NOT twisted and that stitches are correct. I'm ready to close this ring! Here is my completed motif. The final join is my twisted picot join. Look Ma, no lumps!!!

I love shuttle tatting. I actually prefer shuttle tatting to needle tatting. Shuttle tatting is a little harder than tatting with a needle. Since I've already done a needle tatting post I decided to do a post about shuttle tatting for beginners. Tatting is a beautiful old-fashioned art and it has been around for centuries.
Red owl is tatted in cotton perle 8 and light blue aqua owl is tatted in Altin Basak 50 #3001. I love tatting with this Altin Basak thread, they are so comfortable and soft yet holds up quite well. This Altin Basak is from Typstatting in exchange for some pastel Clover shuttles. If you look at the second owl, you will see that the aqua made up the head. It just turned out that way. Martha paid attention to such small details when creating these patterns and they all look so true to form. Thank you Martha.

The Magic Square pattern is now available in my Etsy shop as an instant digital download (click here). This is what the 7 page pattern looks like printed out: I spent many hours trying to come up with written instructions, but in the end I decided to go with diagrams only as I just could not convey the pattern properly with text. The pattern file includes four diagrams showing different options that you can make with the design, as well as a short pictorial page showing how to build the squares. Overall, I had enough time to tat three of the options. These options are just a starting point, and you can certainly go beyond what is shown in the diagrams. You can also tat a very large triangle (instead of a square) to form a shawl. All patterns are completed in one continuous round. Option #1 is the smallest, and easiest to tat: Option #2 is a little larger, but not too difficult: Option #3 would have taken an extra 30+ hours to make, so I don't have any images of it. It would look similar to connecting four Option #1 squares together into a larger square (all of these Magic Squares double as repeatable squares). Option #4, which I have been showing on my blog over the past few weeks looks like this: I found it very tricky to keep my place in this large square because it is all tatted in one round. I used lines of symmetry to remember where I was in the pattern, constantly tatting mirror images of what was on the other side. At this size, it's nearly impossible to follow a diagram...definitely not for beginners! If you have any questions or are confused about parts of the pattern I am always here to help. You can contact me through my Etsy shop, the contact form on the sidebar of my blog, or by email which can be found on the About Me page. Please do check your junk folder for replies, as they often get stuck in there!
