This week's theme at the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog is "inspired by music." My parents raised me to have an appreciation of musicals and one of my favorites has always been Les Miserables. I made a journal page with the song lyrics "On My Own" as a tribute. There are no process shots this time because this went through a dizzying amount of revisions that I would not recommend to anyone in their right mind! The whole page was dripping wet with an ink spray/water disaster at one point, so we'll take it as a win that this page is dry and still has some recognizable elements! To make the leaves stand out, I traced around a branch stencil (from Dina Wakley) and fussy-cut the leaves from all sorts of different patterned paper scraps, then glued them onto the page. There is some polka-dot stenciling in the background and some stamped elements on top. I also used some Prima Water Soluble Oil Pastels to add some color here and there. Hello friends! Did you have a good weekend? I hope so! It is Monday and a new Simon Says Stamp Monday challenge is up, Try to Resist. Because it is the first Monday of the month we are showcasing a brand this week, and it is one of my favourites, namely Ranger. I use something by Ranger on almost everything that I make. I made a sweet little bird panel, using new stamps, paints and surfaces by Dina Wakley. The Scribbly Birds is one of my favourite stamp sets, and I was happy to see that you now get them in a Mini Scribbly Birdies smaller version. The six new Media Acrylic paints are simply gorgeous, and I used a bunch of them here. Resist techniques are among my absolute favourites, but I messed up a little and forgot to wipe off the paint before it dried, since I was busy with something on the computer at the same time. To make your own tissue paper background, start with Tim Holtz new Plain Tissue Wrap and stamp it with Jet Black ink. I love this new background stamp. When dry, apply to a 7 x 5 in Media Board with Gloss Multi Medium - one layer below and one on top. Die cut the Simon Says Stamp Stacked Hearts from Mixed Media cardstock. Apply to the board with more multi medium. Add a thin layer of gesso on top. Stamp the birds and sentiment on tissue paper. I used ordinary tissue paper for this, but you can try the Tim Holtz one too. I am not sure if it disappears as well since it is a little thicker. I would have tested it, but I was in a hurry. These are the six new paints by Dina Wakley. So pretty. I used Ocean, Cheddar, Blushing and Fuchsia. Mix a little bit of water into Ocean and Blushing paint and paint the background. When dry, tear around the stamped images and apply them to the background, with one layer gloss multi medium underneath and one on top. I used one of Tim Holtz Mini Stencils to stencil dots on the background using Transparent Gloss Texture Paste. Let dry. Start painting the birds. Add paint to the background, and when that is dry, also paint some branches for the birds to stand on. I mixed Umber and Cheddar for the branches. Right before the blue paint is dry, wipe paint off from the Texture Paste dots and from the hearts. As you can see, I was distracted and wiped my paint off too late, so the resist effect is pretty subtle. Stamp a sentiment with Jet Black ink and add shadows with Night and Black paint, mixed with water. Finally, splatter Picket Fence paint on the background using a Distress Splatter Brush. Here you can see the subtle resist better. If you wipe off the paint before it dries, you'll have much more of a resist effect. Raised elements on their own also gives a kind of resist, if you use watery paint, as you can see on the hearts. I stamped the background here and there with the Simon Says Stamp Tiny Alphabet Background. The birds were stamped with small sentiment stamps from Dina's All the Gals set. When you are done painting, draw back some of the stamped lines with a marker. This canvas was party inspired by one of my favourite art journaling pages, the Bold Birds page, it is also a tutorial, if you want to have a look. I really like this sentiment from the original Scribbly Birds. The birds are such fun to colour. And this little owl is so cute! I liked pairing it up with the word 'strong'. Here's another look at the hearts and how they become part of the background. If you want some more inspiration regarding resist techniques, you might like these tutorials: Distress Resist Video, Set Sail Journal Page, Coral Butterfly, Inksheet Resist, Balancing Elephants, and Watercolour Resist Box, I hope you will join us in our Try to Resist challenge. I've had a little bit of a play with my new Dina Wakley stamps and Pan Pastels. My only criticism....I need more of them!!! I'm kind of in love with my Pan Pastels too, they are very easy to use so I thought I would do a little step by step, talk you through it kind of thing so you can see how I built up the layers. I took a bunch of tags, tore up some book pages and used Claudine Hellmuth's Matt Medium to stick the pages to the tags. Once the book pages were pasted to the tag, I brushed a small amount of the matt medium randomly over the tag, making sure to leave a few gaps as this would give some interest to my background. Using a sponge, I started to lay down some Pan Pastels and you will see that it is slightly darker over the matt medium areas. With a piece of Cut'n'dry foam, I sponged some Versamark ink through a stencil. Followed by more Pan Pastels. At this point, I have only used one colour of Pan Pastels but I have achieved lots of different shades of this colour. I then repeated the Versamark and Pan Pastels through a different stencil. Next I stamped Dina's "Earnest" text stamp with Versmark I used a slightly darker colour of Pan Pastel to dust over the wet ink. Last but not , I used Ranger's Black Archival ink to stamp Lonely Girl. Sample No 2 Matt medium first, followed by first colour of Pan Pastels. I used a smaller tool to apply streaks of my second colour. I then stamped Dina's "Script Heart" with Versamark and used my small tool to add layers of colour to the solid heart. The last images, Grungy Silhouette and Boys Star were stamped over the Pan Pastels with Rangers Archival. Here are the step by step pictures of the last sample, I'm guessing you're getting the feel of this by now. So there we have it, three samples and photo overload but hopefully you'll be able to understand my excitement. I'm going to be absent for a few days, I'm off to PaperArtsy HQ to spend a few days with Leandra working on Artsycrafts stuff. Hope you mangage to find some time to get creative, Lin EDIT: Silly, silly me.....forgot to say that Dina's stamps can be found on my website www.lbcrafts.com in the misc. section
