Dinosaurs is a theme in our early childhood special education curriculum and a colleague recently asked me for some speech and language therapy ideas. The dinosaur theme is one that students always enjoy and there are so many great resources for speech-language therapy on the Internet. Pteranodon, Alamosaurus, Yangchuanosaurus, Dimetrodon, Brachiosaurus, Zhejiangopterus, Ankylosaurus, and Zigongosaurus! Definitely a good way to practice multisyllabic words and /r/ and /s/ sounds. Check out the Field Guide at Dinosaur Train on the PBS KIDS.org website. Learn how to pronounce all of those dinosaur names and know your dinosaur facts before beginning therapy sessions. And, while you are at the site, look at the games and videos. Play with your dinosaurs to teach verbs – eat, drink, sleep, jump, run, hop, walk, go, sit, stop. Take pictures of your dinosaurs eating, jumping, sitting, etc. Use the photos as visual supports or create a book. A nice example is Dinosaur’s Busy Day by Gaige at Tar Heel Reader. It would be fun to make a book with your students and “their” dinosaurs. While you are at Tar Heel Reader, look at the many dinosaur books. Use them as is or download and modify to meet your student’s needs. Dinosaurs Lived Long Ago is perfect for early childhood groups. Don’t have dinosaurs? Print and laminate the story props for Dinosaur Roar by Paul Stickland at Kizclub.com. Hey there!! Welcome to Simply Speech! I feel like I have gotten to know so many of you through blogging so I figured I would give you all a little peek into my life! This is me :) I was born and raised in St. Petersburg, Florida.... and I am still here today! I knew I wanted to be a speech language pathologist since high school. A good friend of the family had a son who was diagnosed with Apraxia. I went to his therapy sessions and fell in love. At that moment being an SLP trumped wanting to be a teacher. The rest is history! I went to undergrad at The University of Central Florida (where I was an ADPi <>) and completed graduate school at The University of South Florida, Go Bulls! My husband, Kevin, is also from St. Petersburg and co-hosts the afternoon drive show for a local radio station, WiLd 94.1. We got married in 2010 and had our beautiful Kenzie in 2012. Then our handsome little Kameron completed our family in June of 2015! These two keep me on my toes and help teach me the definition of being a patient person! Kenzie enjoys dancing and Kameron loves baseball. I started my career working for Pinellas County Schools. After having children and needing some more flexibility, I switched to private therapy. In 2013 I joined TheraChoice, a private therapy company in St. Petersburg, FL. I love my job and could not imagine doing anything else. Blogging has become a HUGE part of my life. I started blogging in August of 2011. I had just found Pinterest and so many great therapy ideas were linked back to teaching blogs. I was inspired to start a speech blog to share ideas with other therapists. I enjoy creating therapy materials and sharing ideas on my blog. I recently started sharing more than just speech related topics because as a busy mom, I love learning others tips and tricks (from easy dinners to sales!) I hope you enjoy Simply Speech and can find some great ideas and inspiration... after all, that is why it's here!
