Bello...y singular.
Can't say that artist Tim Kowles created this series of drawings produced by attaching drawing implements to the tips of tree branches, because really, the trees did. But it was an inspired idea. "The wind’s effects on the tree, recorded on paper like signatures, each drawing reveals the different qualities and characteristics of each tree."

I just came across these beautiful Heinrich Kley drawings. I hadn't seen them before. The first one features a theme often applied by Kley, modern progress against nature. I know lizards can grow their tail back...not so sure about crocodiles. This one is titled Two lovely Beasts. This is a great drawing, but I don't understand the Bavarian sounding caption. So I won't even try to translate? Anybody in Germany? Either a sketchbook page or a study for a painting.

If Daniel Merriam's watercolors were books, they would be fairytales once upon a time in a far away European dreamland. The painter, who is currently exhibiting at AFA Gallery (covered here), compares his process to a writer's. In our recent interview, Merriam told us about the influence of 17th and 18th century Baroque architecture on his works which he draws from memory. Although imaginary, his elaborate structures must be believable in their world, and he builds them out carefully as a point of reference. In this sense, one could also call him an architect.

Miriam Escofet creates rich oil paintings of idyllic scenes that nostalgically allude to classical antiquity. Perhaps the only notes of pessimism in these sumptuous depictions of ornate architecture, statues and jewels is that Escofet's heavenly world seem to be nearly devoid of human inhabitants. This is a place that seems to belong to the gods — too perfect for mortals. Escofet originally studied 3D design and set out to be a ceramicist, which explains her attention to texture and volume. Each crease of fabric and crevice within a tree's bark is rendered with precision. Light and shadow are greatly contrasted to a level beyond what we normally experience with the human eye, making Escofet's fictional lands seem vivid yet illusory.
