By Diane Griffiths in Art Business Advice > General Art Advice Being creative is scary. I often feel conflicted between pursuing my freedom of expression as I paint a landscape, versus accurately capturing what I see in the landscape I’m painting. For as much of the painting as I can, I don’t try to control my process. I use creative techniques and play about with different mediums and tools. It’s a process of trust and I’m open to suggestions from the painting […]
Ink painting of a Jellyfish using Windsor and newton drawing inks. Roughly 5 x 7.5 inches or 12 x 19 cm Painted on cold pressed watercolour paper. Comes unframed Tips for care: Keep out of direct sunlight, frame or place in other protective casing as soon an possible, make sure the backing for this frame has acid free paper, hang in a stable environment where there aren't drastic changes in heat or chance of high humidity. (heat and damp in general are the enemy) I love painting these colourful, abstract and expressive ink paintings. They're so satisfying to make. The idea behind them is simple, one abstract layer establishes colour some value but is mostly an opportunity to create some expressive and fun texture. The second layer adds line to give the piece form and structure. I Actually started the technique with a happy accident and after some development i began to really love the process. I've created several pieces in this way, mostly animal portraits but I look forward to further development. This painting I'm particularly proud of because when I first painted it I hated it but then went back to it, persevered and created something I feel is unique and beautiful. For me, this illustration represents the fact that nothing is ever truly a failure, and even if you can't rework it into something you love you can learn from it and move on to something better. I'm also a fan of this varied and bright colour pallet. I've been painting seriously for about two years now, when I made my first ever commission but I've been drawing my entire life. Growing up in an artistic home, I’ve always been encouraged to express myself creatively. I think it’s important to always keep exploring new techniques, ideas and materials, so there's some or versatility in my concept and style as an artist. What I love about art is that there are no wrong moves. And when I finish a piece I’ve worked so hard on, the satisfaction I get from it is incomparable with anything else.
Simplification in art involves taking the complex details which we see all around us and simplifying it into a story, or a work of art. With every painting I create, I look for different ways to simplify what I am trying to say. In this post, I discuss some of the different ways you can

By Carrie Brummer in Art Business Advice > General Art Advice A strong composition is an important part of any successful artwork. The word “composition” is simply an artistic term describing how an artist fills space in their artwork using elements and principles of art. Today I’d like to share seven steps to a stronger composition: 1. Use a grid (aka, the rule of thirds) Our phones have made the rule of thirds a near daily occurrence in many people’s lives. Have […]

About The Artwork My work is about dealing with the real world and above all using the images that surround us in everyday life. I often search for the unexpected. An ironic turn to images or things you might expect or their combinations. To lure a participant into new and perhaps unexplored area. I paint what attracts my attention. The theme depends on the situation.
