Then Came Bronson was an adventure/drama television show that starred Michael Parks as disillusioned newspaperman Jim Bronson, who wanders the American West as a modern vagabond/cowboy. Who says you can’t race a Harley-Davidson in the Baja 1000? Well, definitely not Carducci, a company well versed in the brand that have decided to take on the rocks, sand, silt and speed of this legendary off-road race on a highly modified 2003 Sportster. As an added thumb in the eye to all the […]

It’s official. Moto Guzzi is releasing an all-new, more advanced version of its Stelvio adventure touring bike for the 2024 model year. The original Stelvio, powered by a 1151cc air/oil cooled V-twin, was discontinued back in 2017 after an eight-year run, with parent company Piaggio citing low sales numbers versus the expense of meeting then […]
There is just something so right about the look of Walt Siegl Motorcycles’ (WSM) new adventure bike, the L’Avventura. From the dual headlights (one clear, one yellow, for improved contrast and night vision), to the upswept exhaust tucked neatly under the tail section, this built-to-order bike pulses with style and purpose. It pays homage to […]
Honda certainly has a proud history of producing small-bore dual sports that are approachable, reliable and economical. That same winning formula has made the CRF300L a popular choice for riders since it was introduced in 2020. Now, Big Red is making the platform even more accessible with the launch of the new CRF300LS ― a […]
“A challenge for those who go. A dream for those who stay behind”… The words with which Thierry Sabine sent the participants to the first Paris-Dakar rally over forty years ago became historic. Since then, the Dakar Rally has moved out of Africa but the original route along with the desert bikes that raced it […]
This bike choice is a surprise even for me. It's not what You would call a common base for a custom. But as I tend to get more and more friends and co-riders r
Way back in the day, scramblers were really just road bikes that were adapted slightly for desert use. And the same is true for the custom scene—when the scrambler style took off, builders were slapping knobby tires on everything from Honda CX500s to Kawasaki W650s. But a new trend has emerged in recent years; taking bonafide dirt bikes, and restyling them with throwback looks. And if you're building one of those, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better donor than the Honda XR650L. The XR650 has remained relatively unchanged since it first broke cover in 1992 (and you can still
Many off-road-loving adventure riders live by the mantra ‘Light is Right.’ Lighter bikes are easier to handle in rough stuff, more forgiving of mistakes and less tiring to pick up when you do take the inevitable tumble. But in the era of the 500-pound, 100-plus horsepower adventure bike, it seems lighter options are lacking. So […]

Jim Carducci is an engineer with a passion for dual sport motorcycles and the Harley Sportster motor. So he’s put the two together and created the Carducci Dual Sport SC3 Adventure. It’s not quite as improbable as it sounds, and the amount of engineering on the finished product is quite remarkable. But the question remains: why? “I had a vision of how I could somehow transform a Sportster into a viable dual sport motorcycle,” says Jim. “Others have built variations of the idea, but none suited my eye. And few were truly capable off-road dual sport bikes.” To set the

Looking at our new 2024 calendars we see that it’s… the 28th year of basically unchanged production for the Suzuki DR650. And if you consider previous-gen models, the first DR600 came out in1984 as an ‘85 model, and the 650 series began in 1990. That’s a lot of history, and you might wonder: What keeps […]

Africa Twin, The Trip Home This is about 50 clicks into a 200km piste. I haven's seen any sign of life since I left the last village and I didn't see anyone for the rest of the day. It was a strange feeling to be so isolated... The white stuff is a layer of hard salt under the sand - presumably a dry lake bed. Africa Twin in it's element. I guess this is a dry riverbed. The going is a bit rough but the AT just soaks it up. No one as far as the eye can see... Tanking in Tata. It took me a while to find this place. I kept driving past it looking for something with a forecourt, a canopy and a big plastic sign... Note the petrol stored in 5L plastic olive oil bottles in through the open door. The fuel is being poured through a funnel made from another plastic bottle and is being filtered through a nylon stocking! The following day, back on the highway again for a bit. I was glad of the rest really - I'd aggravated an old back injury the previous day and was still in pain. On my map this was shown as a piste and I was simultaneously disappointed and relieved to find it was a sealed road! Christmas Eve, Foum Zguid. Doesn't look like much but I found a nice auberge, got a very fine meal of chicken & chips and olives and made a few phone calls. There was a nice buzz about the town and quite a few deserty tourists. Christmas morning 2008 - Leaving Foum Zguid feeling refreshed, and happy to be heading out into the desert again. Happiness is a well prepared bike, a nearly full tank and a day filled with potential. This is what happens when you forget to deflate your tyres after a tarmac section. The weather is mild rather than hot, the piste is well marked and the going is fairly easy. This was a blissful way to spend Christmas Day. Easy going, but it got sandy as I approached the village in the distance. More to follow.... Part 1 is here... Sahara Trip, Christmas 2008 (Part 1) Part 3 is here... Suzuki’s V-Strom 650 has been a prodigious seller for nearly two decades, beloved around the globe for its versatile, friendly nature and reasonable entry price. But while it is an approachable adventure bike, its limited off-road chops are no match for the current crop of dirt-oriented middleweights in the segment. Enter French builder Greg Loaec, […]
