“One must paint from memory. Nature is merely the means. They want the painter to transmit information simply as if he were the camera. Whether or not a painting looks like that landscape is beside the point. Explaining a picture is impossible. The very reason it has been painted is because it cannot be explained any other way... If one wishes to paint that first pale blue morning atmosphere that made such an impression, one cannot simply sit down, stare at each object and paint them exactly as one sees them. They must be painted as they were when that motif made such a vivid impression.” [Edvard Munch] [Sotheby’s, New York - Oil on canvas, 65 x 89 cm]
Born in 1839 in The Hague, Frederik Hendrik Kaemmerer studied under the Orientalist painter Gérȏme in Paris where he spent much of his life. The artist exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1870 and he was awarded a medal in 1874. He won a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1890 and he was made a chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur the same year.
The men in bowler hats that often appear in Magritte's pictures can be interpreted as self-portraits. Portrayals of the artist's wife, Georgette, are also common in his work, as are glimpses of the couple's modest Brussels apartment. Although this might suggest autobiographical content in Magritte's pictures, it more likely points to the commonplace sources of his inspiration. It is as if he believed that we need not look far for the mysterious, since it lurks everywhere in the most conventional of lives. [Museum Folkwang, Essen - Oil on canvas, 55 x 74 cm]
This watercolour shows the Larsson children at five in the morning, all dressed up to celebrate the maid Emma on her name day, July 23rd. The maids’ room in the farmhouse had been decorated by Karin Larsson, and a few of the many textiles she designed for the family home can be seen here. The ceiling is hung with a cloth with red stripes and embroidered birds. The red tassels were inspired by the ornamentation of folk costumes. Karin mixed traditional patterns and colours with new ideas, and Carl’s paintings chronicle her artistic development. [Nationalmuseum, Stockholm - Watercolour on paper, 32 x 43 cm]

Viggo Johansen was a Danish painter and active member of the group of Skagen Painters who met every summer in the north of Jutland. He was one of Denmark's most prominent painters in the 1890s. He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and first became associated with the Skagen Painters in 1875, encouraged by his fellow students Karl Madsen and Michael Ancher. From 1888 to 1906, he taught at the Artists Academy's School for Women. He then became a professor there until 1920 and, for a time, was one of its directors. In the garden by Jean Brusselmans, 1916. Jean Brusselmans (1884-1953) was a Belgian painter. He developed his own style and, whereas he is often considered a representative of Flemish Expressionism, he refused to associate himself with any art movement. He was not very well known during his life, and had difficulties selling his work, but posthumously he was recognized as one of important Belgian painters of the 20th century.
