A popular in-depth exploration of the runes, reissued with a new chapter on rune divination, now part of the Weiser Classics series.Diana Paxson has distilled her years of experience working with the runes and teaching others into this one definitive sourcework. In a series of chapters dealing with rune pairs, readers will learn the historical meaning of each individual rune and its use and meaning now, in contemporary culture. But as Paxson shares, the real power of the runes comes from internalizing them and using their symbols as sources of wisdom and strength. At the end of each chapter introducing and exploring the pairs of runes are rituals and spells for all levels of ability that help internalize the attributions, meanings, symbolism, and use of the runes. Further study in part two of the book expands the use of the runes in divination, guided meditations, and song. Everything regarding runes is covered in this definitive workbook, from the history of runes and how to make your own rune sets to how to work with them on a psychic, spiritual, and magical level. Old Girls by Jaya Gulhaugen is a delightful murder mystery that absolutely enchanted me. The girls of a former exclusive, “elite” finishing school called Dunluce in London have been meeting every ten years for a reunion for as long as anyone can remember. With many of the old girls dying off and those left now in their nineties, it is clear this latest get-together will probably be their last. Ninety-one-year-old Peggy Gilman has traveled from New York for the reunion, along with her daughter, Jane, and intends to stay with her dearest friend from school, Miriam. When the pair arrives at Miriam’s place, she is nowhere to be seen. Fortunately, they know a spare key is kept in the gumboot at the front door. Letting themselves in, they sit down to rest and await Miriam’s arrival home. A walk on the patio to get some fresh air gives Peggy a massive shock when she discovers Miriam’s lifeless body in one of the chairs. Although everyone assumes Miriam’s heart finally just gave out, something niggles at Peggy that there is more to this than meets the eye. Peggy and Jane set out to investigate and discover who, if anyone, may have wanted Miriam dead earlier than her time. When a second old girl of the school is also discovered dead, the plot thickens and the need to find the killer, if there is indeed one, becomes paramount for the few surviving old girls. So begins a fascinating and compelling murder mystery that had its origins in the early days of the Second World War for this nonagenarian sleuth. Old Girls was way more than I initially expected. Author Jaya Gulhaugen has created a delightful character in the ninety-one-year-old Peggy. Very much in the vein of Dame Ngaio Marsh or Agatha Christie, the author has created a character that appeals to all of us. Peggy really could be anyone’s great-grandmother. Her lack of understanding of tech is so relatable and yet she knows exactly what to do when confronted by modern things that befuddle her senses. “When in doubt – ask a kid.” It was clear that the girls who attended Dunluce were very much the children of privilege and wealth so I particularly enjoyed the idea that no matter what advantage these people may have had in life, all of them had regrets or skeletons in the closet that they were not proud of. The author does an excellent job of creating and then disposing of red herrings all through the narrative. The sign of a good murder/mystery is one that keeps the reader guessing till the very end who the miscreant may have been. This story definitely does that and in a style that is very relatable. I found it an easy single-session read – perfect for a cold Sunday afternoon in front of the fire. I do believe this is just one in a series of sleuthing stories undertaken by Peggy and this encourages me to seek out more from this author. I loved this story and can highly recommend it.
The books on this list today are perfect for those kids that are ready to really start chapter books. I'm not talking about the leveled readers like Penny

Misunderstood Bob: A Comedy of Modern Day Errors by Cassey Day is a unique story about an unproductive worker, Bob Fulton, who is given the task of delivering a proposal to a law firm office. What follows is a comedy of errors because he buys a lottery ticket on the way and arrives at the office when it's already closed. Getting inside through a door used by utility workers, he manages to complete his task. The only problem is that he drops it in the wrong box. Realising his mistake a day later, he also finds out that he delivered the wrong documents. Losing his wallet, which was a gift from his late mother, when he stopped for dinner that evening, Bob now has to correct the two big mistakes of his life. Cassey Day's Misunderstood Bob: A Comedy of Modern Day Errors starts innocently enough by introducing readers to a poor young girl and her mother who win the lottery and a flashback to someone else also winning the prize. It then shifts to Bob Fulton and his misadventures in the course of doing his job. And as the title suggests, a comedy of errors follows in quick succession. This is one character with well-defined flaws but surprisingly enough, he is quite likable, even though his errors may well destroy one company and result in him losing a prized possession. Cassey Day definitely has a unique sense of humor that borders on the obscene, but it is quite refreshing. This is one book that is different and fun to read!
How much? How far? How Heavy? How long? You’ve taken your readers into a brand new world, painted landscapes and cities with your prose, and devised a plot filled with magics and creatures. And then you try to describe someone, and you tell the reader that are 1.8m tall. (cue screeching brakes sound effect) A […]
A vampire is hiding from the Order of the Sons of Light. Her name is Andreea, but in the present time, her undercover name is Melissa Gray. Working for the Elite Missions Operations (EMO) as an assassin, she vowed not to kill the innocent. That is why she saved Dr. Kevin Alinsky and Ashely when she felt that there was something off in the mission. Clearly, the EMO had been lying to her. With a feline alien on the loose and several ripped bodies of humans and animals alike, Andreea teams up with the town's sheriff to prevent more gruesome killings and finally catch the culprit. WJR Parks' novella, The Undying, is the first installment in the Hidden World Series. The book welcomes readers with fascinating but sometimes graphic imagery. It is nicely done though, without being overpowering, and therefore will not be too much for readers' tastes. This thrilling and action-packed tale is fast-paced and does not waste time. Parks writes in a certain style where the chapters are divided into multiple scenes, each introducing a different character and his or her own thread in the story's web. At first, the connection is not that clear, but they all come together and contribute to the big picture. This is a complex story with so many layers, so kudos to Parks for wonderful narration and delivery. The Undying is not your typical vampire story, which is usually superficial -- this one has more intellect and is highly recommended to those who love heart-racing urban sci-fi fantasies.
DECEMBER GUIDED READING This month is so much fun to be in the classroom! I get asked a lot about how to tie reading and writing together, while focusing on fluency, comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, writing, etc. Reading and writing go hand in hand. Writing is SO important in kind
Blade Lord is the first entry in The Decallion series by Susan Hartland and an engrossing read for fans of epic fantasy. It is a story that is intricately woven with fascinating plot points and a game of interests that will immediately catch the attention of readers. Decallion, unlike tethered blade lords, is a free-spirited soul, a blade lord with allegiance to none of the rulers in the Circle Kingdoms. When he is abducted and sold to the Guildlands on the way to a ceremony, his destiny becomes linked to that of a female assassin who will do anything to save his soul. Her mission has always been to hunt and kill men who unlawfully learn to read and write in a world ruled by women. The future looks grim with an immortal tyrant preparing to return to the Circle Kingdoms. Who will stop him? Susan Hartland braids multiple points of view and different, conflicting worlds into a richly detailed and elaborate story, with tension and stakes growing through each page. The characters are realistic, and they evolve in worlds that have their own rules and unique ways of functioning. The author uses suspense to build interest in readers, and it is most evident in the way the relationship between Decallion and Sinnabar is written. The prose leaps gorgeously off the pages, characterized by strong and vivid descriptions and well-crafted dialogues. Blade Lord has everything I look for in fantasy — jaw-dropping action, a magical world to explore, extraordinary characters, and a conflicted hero. Susan Hartland earns the right to have her name among those of masters of epic fantasy, thanks to her great storytelling skills and gift for imaginative narrative.
