En 1876, Ann Eliza a publié une autobiographie intitulée « Wife n° 19 ». Elle explique la raison de son écriture : « Si j’entreprends la rédaction de cet ouvrage, c’est pour montrer au monde le véritable visage du mormonisme et dénoncer les pitoyables conditions de vie de ses femmes, réduites au pire esclavage qui soit. Ce n’est pas seulement leur corps qui leur est ravi, mais également leur âme. » Son autobiographie est un document poignant révélant comment Brigham Young, président de l’Église de Jésus-Christ des Saints des Derniers Jours, et d’autres hommes mormons vivaient à la tête de nombreux ménages, visitant leurs femmes tour à tour, devenues de véritables servantes. Ann Eliza Young a parcouru les États-Unis pour expliquer la dégradation de la polygamie et du mormonisme, mais aussi pour révéler la véritable personnalité de Brigham Young lui-même. Elle a témoigné devant le Congrès américain en 1875. Ses remarques ont contribué à un passage de la loi qui a réorganisé le système judiciaire du territoire de l’Utah, aidant le gouvernement fédéral à poursuivre les polygames. Mon avis : Ann Eliza Young est née au milieu du 19ème siècle. Ses parents ont très tôt adhéré au mouvement Mormon, tout nouvellement créé. La petite fille, entraînée à la suite de ses parents, n’a d’autre choix que de se plier aux règles en vigueur parmi les fidèles de cette religion. Elle est d’abord relativement protégée par son jeune âge, avant d’être rapidement enrôlée dès son adolescence. La polygamie fait rage et les dissensions sont nombreuses. Il y a régulièrement des décisions arbitraires, prises par le dirigeant en charge des mormons. Des spéculations, des spoliations, des disparitions sont monnaies courantes, et malgré cela, Ann Eliza doit se plier à ce qu’elle a connu toute sa vie. Jusqu’au jour où cela va trop loin pour elle, et qu’elle décide de quitter le mormonisme. A la suite de cette décision, elle fera en sorte, par des conférences, des interviews, et de nombreuses rencontres politiques, de déciller les yeux du monde sur ce qu’il se passe dans cette communauté fermée au monde extérieur. J’ai été intéressée par le sujet traité. Obscur en temps ordinaire, il m’était donné l’occasion d’ouvrir une petite porte sur l’intérieur de la communauté des Mormons. La première partie du livre est vraiment très intéressante. Date à l’appui, la jeune femme retrace la création du mouvement, les prémices d’une communauté qui allait devenir quelque peu tentaculaire par la suite. Elle explique comment tout a démarré, comment les premiers principes ont été émis, et l’aura de mysticisme qui englobait tout cela. Mais dans la seconde partie du livre, je me suis un peu plus ennuyée. J’ai eu l’impression d’être passée dans la partie Anecdotes. Relatant de nombreux faits, souvent très similaires, qui entachent la polygamie, Ann Eliza a voulu nous faire passer le message, et on la comprend, que cette pratique était mauvaise, et que les femmes vivant cette vie-là ne pouvait être totalement heureuses. Seulement, j’ai eu l’impression de relire sans arrêt les mêmes faits, en changeant simplement les prénoms. Bien que je comprenne que ce sujet ait pu lui tenir très à cœur, j’ai trouvé dommage de ne pas, plutôt, explorer d’autres aspects plus profondément. J’avoue aussi m’être parfois interrogée quant à la totale véracité des faits qu’elle relate. Ce qui m’a un peu refroidi. Au final, le sujet était intéressant, mais j’aurais qu’il soit traité un peu différemment. Points attribués : 7/10 Je remercie l’édition Jourdan pour cette lecture communautaire. Il vous tente ?
