Every teacher needs a few fun, fast, easy, tricks up his/her sleeve. Here are a few easy classroom management tricks I've picked up over the years. Need a Second to Get Ready for the Next
The debacle of taking grades.... I know some teachers that take a grade on EVERYTHING. Meaning, everything the kids do, they take a grade on and put in the "gradebook." I can't do that. BUT, I do use everything as an informal assessment. I used to have these nice, LOOOOOONG, drawn out plans for small groups. I was really proud of my plans for my small groups. But, then I realized I was missing out on some great teaching opportunities because I HAD to do those plans. lol Well, I decided to try something new and I've "thrown out" those lesson plans and started using our work throughout the day as a "telling" for what I need to do for small groups. I do it for both reading and math - if I see there are a handful of kids that are having trouble with a concept, then I will pull them back. Or if it's after I've already done my small groups, then I will do it for the next day. OR, if I have almost an entire class do it?? Then it'll just be a whole group lesson. Here - I happen to have an example from this week, that I actually took a picture of. Last week, when we were doing Sarah's er, ir, ur pack, I used one of the activities as an informal assessment, which will lead to my vocabulary lesson next week... They were doing the word sort, and I noticed that almost EVERY person did this...... SO, I'm guessing that they don't know the words "lurk" or "smirk" - lol. So, I will be using those two words as one of my vocab words... well, the correct spelling of lurk anyway - ha! Click the pic to down load - and there are "directions" for box for in the download for ya. In case you were wondering where I got the spelling activity - it came from Sarah Kirby Let me tell you, I will own ALL her word work packs eventually! lol In fact, this week we're getting ready to use her /oo/ pack. She has some really great ideas in them! There are certain people/sellers that have year-round activity packs...and I have them ALL Like Kathy Law's Color By Codes Sailing Through First's Super Sentences Yvonne' Math Journal Prompts and Anna's Math Journal Prompts Katie's Busy Teacher Denise's Printables Pack Lisa's Monthly Thematic Graphic Organizer and now Sarah has been added to that list. Also, this week, we've been working really hard on our 3-digit numbers, especially with all the skills in my Numbers Every Day pack - and as we've been doing it, I've been making a few tweaks....I just uploaded a revised version - go snag your updated version if you've bought it! I've actually been updating a lot of packs lately - you've seen the Thunderstorm pack and my Bear Snores On pack that I've recently updated. Next on my list to do some major updating are some of my first packs.... Don't forget - tomorrow is the big TpT Super Bowl Sale! (the extra percentage is only on the 3rd - but my store will still be on sale for the 4th) Make sure when you check out you put in "super" as the code to get the extra 10% off my sale prices! Here are few of my favorite things :)

Howdy! Jen Bradshaw here from Teacher Karma. Thinking strategies to improve reading comprehension Reading without meaning is like eating pizza without cheese....and NOBODY wants that! So how do we get our students to make connections to the text, think while they are reading, and focus on what is most important......MEANING?? When I was in the classroom, I had great success with using the following anchor chart, Reading is Thinking. It is a great way to kick off a mini-lesson by presenting the thinking strategies that they will be learning about and USING EVERY DAY...really for the rest of their lives. Reading strategies to improve comprehension In my opinion, the 6 most important reading strategies are: asking questions predicting summarizing visualizing inferencing making connections Never try and do all of these strategies in one day! Depending on the grade level you teach, you may want to spend a whole week on each thinking strategy before moving on to the next one. If you would like to pick up your freebie and learn more about strategies to improve your student's comprehension, click here please. :) Best wishes!

As our first unit of math back at school, I have started to teach telling time. It's harder then one may think, especially in today's day in age when you can instantly get the time digitally with no need of knowledge on how to tell time on an analog clock. However, it is an important life skill, and of course it is a common core state standard! So on top of my telling time products in my TPT store... (Which can be found HERE) I have created a reminder poster of the different parts of the clock! This will be added to the store SOON! However, I thought I would share it now! It breaks down the hour hand and the minute hand and what they do. As well as AM and PM! Poster FREEEEEEEBIE!! I also have this wonderful FREEEEEEEEEEEBIE! This is a make your own clock! There are two different versions! My favorite way to do this so far, is I have the students color the hour hand 1 color, and the big clock numbers the same color! The students then color the minute hand another color, and they color the outer ring the same color! This helps students make the connection of which numbers are told by which hands! Happy Monday All! Hope you have a fantastic week! =)
Thank you to Diane for submitting this fun book report poster. It’s legal size (paper) worksheet and is great for lower grades (or as an easy project for upper grades). Great end of the year …

Students will find themselves engaged in creating their own stories using this roll-the-dice chart. Students roll the dice three times. Each time the dice is rolled, a marker is placed under the character that was rolled, then under the setting and finally under the problem. Students then begin creating their story using the three selected parts. The focus is on having students practice writing their stories using the given character, setting and problem while they must find a solution to the problem. This is a great activity to reinforce creating writing, story structure, identifying problem and solution, or as a bilingual center activity. It is also helpful in developing students' problem solving skills. You can print this black and white form onto yellow or any color tag board paper and laminate it to make it durable.

I completely crashed today! Do you ever have days where you just decompress? That was my day. I am fully aware that I am probably the only teacher that hasn't set my classroom up yet, but I just couldn't go. I woke up at 7:30 and started getting ready at 8:30... at 9:30, I was still just sitting around and by 10:00 I decided that a lazy day would be nice. Last week was great, but 15 hour days wore me out. I still don't care if I see tennis shoes for a week, a month, or never again. Just kidding! However, I have to admit I seriously never realized though how much I hate having my toes closed in by shoes. Croc flip flops have NEVER felt so good! So, what was I doing last week? I spent the week working at a camp for kids with special needs called Camp Hawkins. I have tried and tried to figure out how to put into words just how incredible the week was, but there just aren't words to describe every second. How do you describe the feeling of seeing a young 14 year old kid show another 14 year old kid how to throw a football? He literally took his hand and lined his fingers up on the laces and coached him. How do you explain what it feels like to watch a 19 year old that is paralyzed be lifted from his chair and put in a go cart and driven around a track. What can I say to help you understand how your heart feels after watching 25 kids perform at a talent show? Each of them had their own talent. Whether it was painting a bird house or listening to the next Billy Graham sing, you couldn't help but watch in awe. Here's what I learned last week. Everyone that says that kids with special needs are different, well they are right. The 25 kids we worked with smiled all day, were hilarious, worked hard, never complained, showed no fear, were willing to do anything including a messy meal (eating spaghetti and salad with their hands), bumper cars, and getting on stage to perform. To top it off, they didn't get upset if they lost and they didn't brag when they won. They cheered for each other and even more than that, they were confident in who they were. So, yes, the boys were different. They are better than all of us. They are more trusting, passionate, caring, and sure of themselves. I don't know how much of a difference I made to them, but they definitely made a difference to me. Now that I've told you a little about my trip, here's my newest book report freebie. Hope you guys can use it. I made two different types so you can differentiate a little. Alright, I hope you have a great night!
