Morrissey was famous for picking his heroes to appear on the sleeves of the classic Manchester band's albums. But who are these mystery celebrities that grace your record collection?
Vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. Cults made their name in black and white. A pair of film school dropouts who burst onto the New York scene with a perfect single and a darkly retro sound, the band's first two albums play like noirish documentaries on a lost girl group. Four years after Static, Cults returns with Offering, an exciting collection of songs bursting with heart, confidence, shimmering melody and buzzing life. The time off has given the band new energy and new ideas-Cults are working in Technicolor now. The core duo remains the same. Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion, both 28, still live in New York. They still finish each other's thoughts and still share a love of catchy music and black humor. But the pair have put some blood on the tracks since their breakout debut: they've toured the world, built a devoted audience, survived a breakup, grown up in green rooms, parted ways with their old label and made a home of their new one. Offering is the work of two artists who know what they want and how to make it happen.

This is the original Rough Trade album cover - later re-issues lost the blue, cropped the photo and superimposed text in a different font. “The Smiths” is, I think, Monotype Grotesque Bold. The album title appears to be Univers Bold Condensed. The photo is of Fabrice Colette
Music was a great source of unity for the Yugoslavs, with people enjoying genres from folk to disco and heavy metal performed by artists from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds. Serbs, Croats, Slovenes, Macedonians, Bosnians, and Montenegrins shared the stage to create beautiful music, alongside soulful Roma and Albanian artists who brought even more exotic and unique sounds.
Inside the 1991 recording sessions that transformed rock for a generation
1997 was a watershed year for British music. Not only had several Britpop-associated acts seen an upturn in their fortunes, with a wide range of guitar-based turns scoring chart-toppers, there was the arrival of some influential new voices, a bunch of great new pop acts and a massive crossover for dance music. Let’s have a look at a few of them…

Directed by Tim Pope, Soft Cell’s Sex Dwarf video, released to promote their debut album, created quite a scandal in 1981. Claiming it was pornographic, British police actually confiscated copies of the video. It was banned from MTV at the time and has been banned from YouTube…though it pops up now and then. The Sex Dwarf clip reminds me of the films of Jack Smith and The Kuchar Brothers, mashed up with Texas Chainsaw Massacre: a Bacchanalian group grope full of writhing bodies, hot flesh and a chainsaw. Enjoy it in all its sleazy glory. Tim Pope and Marc Almond discuss the making of “Sex Dwarf.”

Tom Wood was in New Brighton in the 1980s to photograph people looking for love (the phrase forms the title of Wood’s 1989 book) – or at least a grope by the bar and a ‘slowy’ to Lionel Richie’s Three Times A Lady. Many of Tom’s images are of the Merseyside resort’s Chelsea … Continue reading "A Slow Grope In 1980s New Brighton – Sticky Nights At The Chelsea Reach"
