Architecture is meant to fulfill both practical and expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes. When you look at a structure, you can distinguish these two ends but they cannot be separated, and the relative weight each of them carry can vary widely. Plus, every society has its own, unique relationship to the natural world and its architecture usually reflects that as well, allowing people from other places to learn about their environment, as well as history, ceremonies, artistic sensibility, and many aspects of daily life.

This grade II listed house had been heavily altered and adapted in the 1970’s with a poor quality conservatory which was too cold in winter and too hot in summer. The interior was adapted and modernised with the creation of…Read more ›
Over the years, we at Bored Panda have released quite a few pieces on subpar design. And while these publications are incredibly fun to prepare and scroll through (just take a look at this one), we need to balance them out a little. After all, not every designer is an incompetent 3-year-old. Some of them are 4... light-years ahead of the competition.

It feels beyond exciting to be able to be able to say that Andrew and I are finally moving out to the countryside into a little charming 1873 stone schoolhouse. The most unexpected part of this move is that the property is right across the road from my parents, and the home where I grew up. The way that this deal fell into place feels like the biggest push from the universe.
A carved stone uncovered on the Ness of Brodgar today has been hailed as the finest example of Neolithic art recovered from the Stenness excavation site – if not in the UK. The stone, which is decorated on both sides, was discovered at the base of the later south-west internal corner buttresses in Structure Ten […]

Finally after three years we meet again! I visited Beelitz back in 2011 when I just started exploring abandonements (view my set here www.preciousdecay.com/index.php/portfolio/beelitz-heilsta...) At that time I was less experienced and the location made that much of an impression to me, that I knew I had to go back there once. And finally this moment has come. This place is in my opinion one of the ancestors of urban exploration. Pure decay, barely touched by vandals, in buildings which breathe history. This complex was built in the end of the 19th century and was used as a sanatorium for patients with lung tuberculoses. The buildings are surrounded by forest and the architecture was very modern for these times. Equiped with balcony's where patients could enjoy suntherapy and other revolutionary therapies took place here. It was mainly the poor people who suffered from tuberculoses, but if you were either poor or rich: Everybody received the same treatment. Patients were given lots of fresh air, sunshine and excellent food. The women were seperated from the men to avoid mass infection. The buildings were even built in a way that the washing area is situated in the women's building and the coal house was near the men's building. In the 1st and 2nd world war, the sanatorium was used as military hospital for the German forces. Even Adolf Hitler has been a patient here when he was treated for a wounded leg. During the 2nd world war, the place was heavily bombed by the allied forces. When the war was over, Beelitz was occupied by the Russian forces for a long time. It has been in use as a military hospital until the Russians left in the early 1990's. Since then it has been left abandoned. When you walk here, you can almost feel what has happened between these walls.
