BENTON MURDOCH SPRUANCE (1904 -1967) Benton Murdoch Spruance was born in Philadelphia in 1904 and is primarily known as a lithographer of social, mythological, and religious subject matter. He was an expert technician in color lithography and was also known for his landscape and genre paintings. He attended architectural classes at the University of Pennsylvania where he developed an interest in graphic sketching. This interest led him to win a competitive scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. “Lithography was not taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in the late 1920s when Spruance studied there. His introduction to the medium took place in 1928 at the shop of Edmond and Jacques Desjobert when Spruance was in Paris on the first of his two Cresson grants for study in Europe. Returning to Philadelphia determined to continue working on stone, the young artist located Theodore Cuno, an old German lithographer who worked for the Ketterlinus Lithographic Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia, where he had printed for Joseph Pennell. At night, Cuno printed privately for artists in his small basement workshop.” – Fine and Looney Spruance won several awards and fellowships, including two Cresson Scholarships to travel in Europe and two Guggenheim grants. He served on the Philadelphia Arts Commission, was the Chairman of the Arts Department of Beaver College in Jenkintown, and was the chairman of the Printmaking Department of the Philadelphia College of Art.
