This à la cART lesson introduces students to the anonymous street artist Banksy. They will learn about Banksy, the difference between street art versus graffiti, triangular composition and stenciling techniques. You will Receive 35-page, non-editable PDF a single class (60 minute) duration art project an introduction script to read aloud with questions to engage students list of different art techniques used step-by-step instructions with pictures gallery of student work common core art standards extension activities Total of 35 pages Materials Needed I design à la cART lessons to be completed with simple art supplies as it is difficult enough trying to cart materials from one classroom to another. This Banksy stenciling project does need something extra: (1) sponges cut into small cubes and (2) tracing stencils prepared beforehand. Approximate Time Needed The time needed will depend on the age group of students but usually takes approximately 60 minutes for the read-aloud introduction, art lesson and clean up. Read Aloud Introduction You do NOT need any art and / or art history knowledge to teach À la cART lessons – it is all laid out for you. The read-aloud introduction introduces the artist and explains art movement and techniques pertinent to the lesson; with questions guiding student conversation. Reference Materials I like using visuals to support my lessons. Due to copyright infringement, the art pieces are not included but I have listed the artist and title of the artwork. You can do a Google image search and then share with the class by projecting on a smartboard or whiteboard. 'If you don't like graffiti look away like you do for genocide" Seen in Austin, Texas
Condition: as pictured, few bends around margins. Dimensions: 29.3 x 21.0 cm. The artwork is also baring signature "Banksy", in the lower right, done in red crayon, which may point to the influence of the famous graffiti artist. Also numbered on verso, referring to a series of 100. The artwork has a reference number marked on verso, which in our opinion belong to the previous collections this artwork was part of. The artwork is offered as after the artist, sold as is. Offering a fine, very expressive, limited silkscreen, probably from the late 2000’s, showing a composition resembling Karma sign, done in red and black colors placed on heavy artists paper. The present silkscreen shows Graffiti and Modernism influence, as other images of the era. The paper is heavy, well preserved with some bends around the margins. On verso we find a stamp and a reference mark next to it. A very interesting find that will be a great addition to any art collection or interior. Graffiti art can be understood as antisocial behaviour performed in order to gain attention or as a form of thrill seeking, but it also can be understood as an expressive art form. Graffiti was particularly prominent in major urban centres throughout the world, especially in the United States and Europe; common targets were subways, billboards, and walls. In order to attract the most attention possible, this type of graffiti usually appeared in strategically or centrally located neighbourhoods. The art world’s fascination with artists who functioned outside traditional gallery channels stimulated an interest in this form of self-expression. In the 1980s New York artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat gained notoriety for their graffiti and parlayed this recognition into successful careers as painters represented by top galleries. In a surprising fusion of art, architecture, theatre, and engineering, British sculptor Alex Chinneck produces contextually responsive interventions that animate the urban landscape in which they stand. A house that melts, a mansion that levitates or an upside-down tower of 37 meters are some of the amazing creations by Alex Chinnek who transforms the landscape of the cities with great humor, creativity and talent! "I became interested in art at about 16 years old and like most people the doorway into an artistic practice, or an interest in art, normally begins with painting. When you speak to most practicing artists at some point along their journey they have had a very influential figure or a very passionate figure and I had a fantastic teacher at school – he taught me to paint.
