A lovely vintage knotted cream glass pearl necklace that is 29 inches long with gold-plated rings OR a brass clasp. This necklace can be worn as one strand or doubled to create multiple effects - or buy two and have a four-strand look! Perfect for your everyday or historical/costuming needs. Portraits of Marie Antoinette, among others, was my inspiration for these. First photo is of Robin Marie at the Paca House and Gardens, Historic Annapolis, Maryland, and last photo is of me wearing it a different way. Last photo is of Alexandra and Elena Pavlovna, by Elisabeth Vigée Le Brun, ca. 1795-1797 If more photos are needed, just convo me.

Strange fashions have been with us for hundreds of years and include skirts draped over cages, shoes with 18" points, and hair augmented by horse hair stretched over wire forms.

Late in 1927, Noël Coward was so upset that he made plans to leave the country. After a run of golden successes, the twenty-nine-year-old writer had just suffered two humiliating flops, the last of which was Sirocco, a play he had originally written in New York in 1921. The opening night at the Daly’s Theatre … Continue reading "The Story of Soho Girl Jessie Matthews"

Knitted sweaters were a clothing staple throughout the '40s. Sweater styles shared similar designs to the blouse, and were often called knit blouses instead. In the UK, sweaters were called jumpers (not to be confused with an American jumper dress, popular with teens). This article will focus on women's 1940s long sleeve sweaters, cardigans, sweater
I made myself a Victorian bicycle sweater out of 100 % wool knit fabric and there was enough to make a matching beret, too!
In the Spring of 1908, three women walked onto the Longchamp racecourse in Paris and jaws dropped. The elite society event was known for debuting the latest couture creations to the public, but no one had seen fashion quite like this before. Dressed in blue, white and havane brown creations, according to newspapers, spectators called the three…
It’s the most fashionable of fairytales- the poor Lincolnshire lad who went out to work at 11, arrived in Paris with £5 in his pocket and eventually designed the first bespoke frocks for the newly re-established Parisian court within years of arriving in the city.
Today’s pattern is another lovely one from Vogue, this time Vogue Knitting 34 (circa late 40s). I really adore the way the star design is split over the yoke in two colours – it would look super in light tan and dark green, even white and navy. Sizes: 32, 34, 36 and 38″ busts Yarn: Fingering weight (shetland recommended) Needles: UK 9 and 12 = metric 3.75mm and 2.75mm

The iconic crinoline - the "cage" crinoline or hoop skirt - which made it's debut in the 1850s, reached the zenith of its real estate in the first years of the next decade. The shape of the thing would gradually shift toward the back during the following few years, before completely disappearing at the beginning of the new decade; the "business at the back" we see so much of here, became the the bustle, the look of the 1870s. Ironically, the cage crinoline's final collapse fairly coincided with the fall of Imperial France, a period in which Paris fashion put down, once and for all, any dissent that it might be anything but the last word in les modes des dames, a certainty that would go unchallenged until World War II. Front view of the above. I should note than most of these gowns were photographed without the full degree of structural support they were designed to employ. While it can certainly be argued that the folds of beautiful yardage draping and trailing on the ground are very graceful, many of these examples were originally worn with a crinoline so large that it filled out the skirt of the gown, eliminating much - sometimes nearly all - of the lovely excess of fabric we see here. Front view of the above. Back view of the above, but with a different bodice. Gowns were frequently made with two different bodices, one for day wear, one for evening wear. Front view of the above. Clara Josephine Schumann Born on 13 September 1819, was a German pianist, composer, and piano teacher. Regarded as one of the most distinguished pianists of the Romantic era, she exerted her influence over the course of a 61-year concert career, changing the format and repertoire of the piano recital by lessening the importance of purely virtuosic works. She also composed solo piano pieces, a piano concerto, chamber music, choral pieces, and songs.

Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour, may be best known as King Louis XV's chief mistress. But she was also a well-educated tastemaker, a patron of the arts and an artist in her own right.

I was tumbling through Tumblr, one of my favourite places on the internet to discover history’s lesser-known muses and there, on page thirty-something of my browsing, I stopped at a photograph of an androgynous woman taken by Marianne Breslauer, a name unfamiliar to me. As I began googling her work, my screen was soon taken over by black…
