Like in many cities in the Western world, there are currently thousands of homeless people in Brazil. This population includes families, children, young people, the elderly, lonely women, and men. Many of them have been homeless for years, with no prospect of getting out of this situation. In many ways, the condition of homeless people in Brazil is practically identical to that of homeless people in other big cities in the world: it represents hopelessness, social invisibility, and absolute isolation from the rest of society. But there is one aspect in which the homeless population in Brazil stands out from the rest: most of these people live with dogs that also live out on the streets.

Life in modern society poses a very real challenge for some of us. Itβs no secret that poverty has pushed a staggering amount of people onto the streets in the past decade. The scope of this problem is reflected well in numbersβover half a million people were officially counted as homeless in the US. The state of California has been hit the hardest. Its unsheltered population totaled up to 151,278 people last year. Luckily, there are still some good Samaritans who bring back a glimmer of hope when it comes to the invisible lives of those suffering outside the door. Stewart Kwane, a street veterinarian, has been on a mission to help the pets of homeless Californians since 2011.

Here's sweet, gentle, beautiful and adoptable Kate, stepping up for her Sunday Selfie. We think she nailed it, don't you? Kate's only about two years old. She was found as a stray with her very small babies, who have all since been adopted. Now it's time for Kate to find her very own happily ever! She's spayed, microchipped, current on her vaccinations, and negative for FIV and FeLV. She gets along well with other cats, but is not a fan of dogs. She'd be a great addition to almost any home for the holidays. How about yours? Oh, and about that "Easy Like Sunday" in the title ... check out our pals Newman (bottom) and Mandy, who look to have visions of sugarplums (or maybe some catnip mice) dancing in their heads. πΈ It's Sunday, which means we're hopping along in the Sunday Selfies Blog Hop, hosted by our pals at The Cat On My Head. Be sure to check it out to see who else is hopping along (or to join in on the fun)!
Have you ever wondered what happens when you put some rambunctious (but sweet) kittens in the same open room as a big male kitty? Well, if that big cat happens to be our buddy Cinnamon, all will be fine. This sweet mancat is so patient and gentle with them that we might just start calling him "Uncle" Cinnamon. Here he is with little Houdini. She's still a little shy with people, but not with Cinnamon.π Cinnamon is about 5 years old, and ended up at PAWS after being found as a stray. He is super mellow, friendly and affectionate, and loves people and cats alike. Cinnamon is neutered, microchipped and current on his vaccinations. He has tested positive for FIV, but it's important to remember this does not mean he can't live a long and happy life! According to Best Friends Animal Society, "FIV-positive cats can live normal lives, both in quality and duration. They just need to be monitored for infections and dental issues. But if theyβre well cared for, they can be healthy, happy, wonderful pets." FIV cannot be passed to other cats through casual contact, or by sharing food, water, or a litter box. Nor can it be passed to people or other pet species. Cinnamon is so ready to find his happily ever after. Is it with you?
