Although some people claim that they can read anywhere, anytime, we all know that a comfortable, well lit, soft spot is ideal. On a blanket in a park is one such perfect spot; on dry, spongy moss, under a tree, is another good location. But what happens if you're a city dweller (or not even!), and outdoor reading spots are at a premium?

No Frills Sweater is a simple raglan sweater with neckline shaping at the front. The fit is slightly oversized, but the wide rib edges and the shorter length give the sweater a feminine silhouette. The No Frills Sweater is worked from the top down, which makes it easy to try it on along the way, so you can customize it to fit your body and end up with the perfect sleeve and body length for you. If you want to make sure that the rib neck edge keeps it shape over time, you can sew a thin elastic thread along the edge. Start by knitting a swatch to determine which needle size gives you the correct gauge. Size guide The No Frills Sweater is designed to have approx. 15 cm [6 inches] of positive ease, meaning it is designed to be 15 cm [6 inches] larger in circumference than your chest measurement. The sizes XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL are designed to fit a chest circumference of 80-85 (85-90) 90-95 (95-100) 100-110 (110-120) 120-130 cm [31½-33½ (33½-35½) 35½-37½ (37½-39½) 39½-43¼ (43¼-47¼) 47¼-51¼ inches]. The measurements for the finished garment are on the front page of the pattern (note that these measurements are only achieved if the sweater is knitted in the correct gauge). Before beginning your project, measure yourself with a measuring tape around your bust (or your widest upper body part) to determine which size will fit you the best. For example, if you measure 93 cm [36½ inches] around your bust (or around the widest part on your upper body) you should knit a size M. A size M sweater has a bust circumference of 108 cm [42½ inches], which in the given example would give you 15 cm [6 inches] of positive ease. Sizes: XS (S) M (L) XL (2XL) 3XL Bust circumference: 100 (104) 108 (114) 120 (130) 137 cm [39¼ (41) 42½ (45) 47¼ (51¼) 54 inches] Sleeve circumference: 36 (39) 41 (44) 46 (46) 47 cm [14¼ (15¼) 16¼ (17¼) 18 (18) 18½ inches] Length mid back: 52 (54) 55 (56) 58 (60) 62 cm [20½ (21¼) 21¾ (22) 22¾ (23½) 24½ inches] Gauge: 21 sts x 28 rows in stockinette stitch on 4 mm needles = 10 x 10 cm [4 x 4 inches], after blocking Needles: Circular needles : 3 mm [US2½] and 4 mm [US6] / 40 and 80 or 100 cm [16 and 32 or 40 inches] Double-pointed needles : 3 mm [US2½] and 4 mm [US6] Yarn: 250 (250) 300 (300) 350 (350) 350-400 g Sunday by Sandnes Garn (50 g = 235 m [257 yds]) or Arwetta by Filcolana (50 g = 210 m [230 yds]) held together with 125 (125) 150 (150) 175 (175) 175-200 g Tilia by Filcolana (25 g = 210 m v) or Tynn Silk Mohair by Sandnes Garn (25 g = 212 m [232 yds]) The white No Frills Sweater in the picture is knitted in one strand of Sunday in the colour Whipped Cream and one strand of Tynn Silk Mohair in the colour Natur - both from Sandnes Garn. The green No Frills Sweater in the picture is knitted in one strand Arwetta in the color Hunters Green and one strand Tilia in the color Reseda. Both from Filcolana. I adore the work of Muriel at Clothogancho, who paints with her naturally dyed yarns. Recently I have been in contact with her to purchase one of these amazing works of art. The colorways in both are so different yet so appealing, such a tough decision. I've been debating for over 3 months now but I've finally made a decision. Which piece would you have picked?? Let me know, then I'll tell you which one I bought. Just wish I could afford both.
When I was homeschooling our kids for those incredible eleven years I helped bring very old out-of-print books back to life by typing page after page of these wonderful texts so they could be formatted in an easily downloadable format. Technology has updated a lot in the past five or six years and what was once a long process is now much quicker, so more and more public domain vintage books are available online for all of us to enjoy and glean from. Books written to children 'back in the day' are comparable to many modern books written to adults - the vocabulary back then was wonderful, which is why I read books that were hundreds of years old to my children for two hours every afternoon until they were 15 or 16. My younger son's particular favourite was the original Robinson Crusoe from 1719, but he was also a Jules Verne and Captain Marryat fan. I thought you might like to take advantage of a couple of free books I've recently found that are specifically for sewing and embroidery? Like this gem which I found to be delightful! It's written for children and is full of black and white hand drawn illustrations, so if you're new to sewing (and even if you're not) you'll find it overflowing with how-to's. The Mary Francis Sewing Book can be downloaded HERE Another wonderful book is The Little Girl's Sewing Book. This is a Project Gutenberg book and has black and white photographs throughout to teach you visually as well as by written instruction. This book is HERE to download or read online... There is also 99 Embroidery Stitches available to download HERE... Enjoy these books. I think we can all learn something new from them, and besides, what's nicer than a sensible children's book about our favourite craft? Especially when served with a pot of tea and a rock cake or two... bless you, Don't miss out on any Elefantz news or free patterns. English licorice, or licorice allsorts, is a classic, old-fashioned confection. I just love the ones with coconut and black licorice – one bite and I am in heaven.
