Since December I have spent about 5 weeks in Seoul, Korea. I always stay at the Grand Hyatt. Love that joint. There is a grand lobby with a beautiful bar overlooking the entire city of Seoul. It sits in front of 30 foot windows. Very impressive. I’m not much of a fancy boy but I […]
Paul Hogarth (1917 - 2001) was one of the most prolific and successful commercial artists of his day, a painter in watercolours, an illustrator and printmaker, he is probably best known for his images of the faraway and exotic, with a sensitivity to architecture. For biographical notes on Paul Hogarth see part 1. For earlier works see parts 1 and 2 also. ( clicar )

There is beauty to be had in every aspect of our life and surroundings; this is a fact that every artist knows, enjoys, exploits and also uses to create his or her own version of art. Many people can wax poetic about the breathtaking vistas of nature and this is indeed easy to do as the beauty there is unusual and untouched. This is also true of the past where there were buildings and structures that really used a person’s ingenuity and imagination to come up with the most fantastic structures. This becomes really obvious when you look at the beautiful castles around the world, where fantasies seems to have come true.

Many medieval manuscripts are works of art with devotional passages written in careful calligraphy, accompanied by vivid illustrations and ornate, decorative borders. But equally captivating is the marginalia – the sketches and doodles in the margins of the text – which range from the mundane to the bizarre, obscene and just plain weird.
Taller than trees and towering over buildings, Johanna Goodman‘s pieced together female forms appear to stretch far above the landscapes before them. The collaged works, which combine elements of art, design, and architecture, are a part of Goodman’s series titled The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings, which aims to explore the individual’s role in history and popular culture. “[The Catalogue of Imaginary Beings] draws its inspiration from a wide spectrum of sources—including magical realism, surrealism, and symbolism—and more specific references such cultural artifacts as talismans, idols, totems, and all of the material detritus that surrounds all of us all the time,” Goodman told Ms. More
