CYD CHARISSE: 1922-2008 Actress danced into heart of Hollywood; Mary Rourke, Los Angeles Times Wednesday, June 18, 2008 (06-18) 04:00 PDT Los Angeles - -- Cyd Charisse, who brought sizzle and sophistication to dance in classic movie musicals such as "Singin' in the Rain" and "Silk Stockings," died Tuesday. She was 86. Ms. Charisse died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after suffering an apparent heart attack Monday, publicist Gene Schwam said. Ms. Charisse captured moviegoers' attention in a quick succession of films, starting with "Singin' in the Rain" in 1952, in which she partnered with dancer and actor Gene Kelly in a steamy ballet. She was strong, lithe and "drop-dead gorgeous to look at," said Larry Billman, a dance/film historian and author of her breakthrough performance. She teamed with Kelly again in "Brigadoon" in 1954 and "It's Always Fair Weather" the next year. Ms. Charisse also danced with Fred Astaire, the premier dancer of his age, in major production numbers in the '50s. In "The Band Wagon" (1953), they danced to the music of "Dancing in the Dark" on a set that looked like New York City's Central Park. Four years later, Ms. Charisse and Astaire were partners in "Silk Stockings." Astaire said that Ms. Charisse was "beautiful dynamite" on screen. Ms. Charisse's other starmaker roles of the 1950s included "Deep in My Heart" (1954), in which she danced a sexy duet with James Mitchell. Unlike many top female dancers in the era of movie musicals, Ms. Charisse was trained as a ballerina in the Russian tradition. Earlier in her movie career, Ms. Charisse's dark hair and eyes led to some unlikely roles as "ethnic-exotic" characters in B movies such as "Fiesta" (1947), in which she played the Latina fiancee of actor Ricardo Montalban. She was cast as Polynesian in "On an Island With You," a song, dance and swim film starring Esther Williams in 1948. She was born Tula Ellice Fink- lea on March 8, 1922, in Amarillo, Texas. Her older brother nicknamed her Sid, a variation on Sis. In Hollywood, she changed the spelling to Cyd. She began ballet lessons at 6, encouraged by her father, Ernest, after she developed a mild case of polio that left her with a slight atrophy on her right side. During a family vacation in Los Angeles when she was 12, her parents enrolled her in ballet classes at a school in Hollywood. One of her teachers was Nico Charisse. As a teenager, she returned to the school as a full-time student. Not long afterward, Col. W. de Basil, the director of the Ballet Russe dance company, visited the school and saw her dance. He invited her to join his company, and she toured with it. In 1939, while she was in France on tour with the ballet company, she and Nico Charisse eloped. They had one son, Nico, before their marriage ended in divorce in 1947. Ms. Charisse then married singer and nightclub entertainer Tony Martin in 1948. The couple had one son, Tony Martin Jr., and her sons survive her, along with two grandchildren. Martin and Ms. Charisse settled in Hollywood soon after their marriage. One of her earliest movies was "Something to Shout About" (1943), in which she performed in a ballet. She captured wider attention three years later in "Ziegfield Follies," when she had a brief featured moment with the film's star, Fred Astaire. It led to her signing a seven-year contract with MGM Studios in 1946. In the '60s, Ms. Charisse performed cabaret shows while she continued working in Hollywood in films such as "Two Weeks in Another Town" (1962). She made frequent guest appearances on popular television series, including "Hawaii Five-O" and "The Love Boat" in the 1970s and "Murder She Wrote" in the 1980s. She also worked in theater, performing in "Charlie's Girls" in London in the 1980s and making her Broadway debut as an aging Russian ballerina in "Grand Hotel" in 1992. She was 70 when she first appeared on Broadway. PHOTO SOURCE: www.doctormacro.info

This recipe, from Atlanta chef Todd Ginsberg, is pure latke perfection. Ginsberg prefers to cook his latkes (potato pancakes) on a griddle rather than deep-frying them. This results in a lighter, less greasy latke that also reheats well—so you can make a big batch in advance. These latkes fry up crisp with frizzled, lacy edges. The key, Ginsberg says, is having enough clarified butter in the pan at all times. "If you do not hear sizzling, there's not enough fat. And don't flip or touch the latkes until you see a golden color creeping up the sides," he advises. Ginsberg prefers frying latkes in clarified butter, but this recipe will work just as well with canola or vegetable oil. Regardless how you like to top your latkes, this 30-minute recipe might be your new favorite. With a high yield and short timeframe, this latke recipe is the one for you if you're hosting a crowd for Hanukkah. If you're not serving immediately or make multiple batches for seconds (and thirds), our Test Kitchen recommends draining your latkes on a paper-towel lined baking sheet for a few seconds before transferring them to a wire rack on a rimmed baking sheet. To keep them hot and crispy without getting soggy, place them in a 250˚ oven.

Today's world of "Avatar" food is sizzle crisps; a popular Fire Nation snack often eaten at festivals and events, like the circus, such as the one in "Appa's Lost Days" (ATLA s.2, ep.16). It's said that the taste of sizzle crisps is distinctly bacon-like with the typical Fire Nation hotness. So I decided to make this snack out of for realsies bacon. And then made it like candy. And then added the hotness. So here you go! Fire Nation sizzle crisps, AKA sugared baked bacon, powdered with spices. Of course, you can go as easy or as hard on the spices as you'd like. Fire Nation Sizzle Crisps Ingredients: 1 pkg. Bacon (preferably center cut, normal thickness) 1/2 Cup White Granulated Sugar OR 3/4 Cup Brown Sugar Ground Red Pepper Powder (&/or other spice powder. I like the red pepper + McCormick's Grill Mates Fiery 5 Pepper Seasoning) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 300°F. Line a baking tray (with sides) with foil & place a wire rack onto the tray. Pour the sugar onto a large plate & spread it around & (if using brown sugar) fluff it with a fork. Open the bacon pack & cut all of the bacon in half. Using the fork or your hands, dredge each strip of bacon in the sugar (rub it on if using your hands, esp. good for brown sugar) & shake off any thick clumps. Lay the sugared strips on the wire rack & slide the tray into the preheated oven. Bake for about 15 mins & then carefully flip the strips over & bake for about 15 mins. more or until the bacon is nice & crisp-ish & no longer pink (oven times vary & bacon brands vary too, so keep an eye on it! Don't let the bacon burn!). 2. Remove the tray & let cool about 5 or so mins. The bacon will stiffen a little as it cools. Stack one row of strips together & transfer to a plate or cutting board. Cut into bite-sized pieces & then separate the pieces from one another. Repeat with the remaining bacon strips. Put all of the pieces in a plastic sandwich baggie & sprinkle in some red pepper powder &/or any other spice you'd like. Do this to taste, of course (I suggest adding powder in small amounts)! Seal the baggie & shake to coat the bacon pieces. Serve the spiced bacon pieces in red cupcake liners (this is great if you're having a party or something). If you don't want to cut the bacon into little pieces, simply sprinkle-spice both sides of the uncut bacon strips while they're still on the wire rack. Enjoy!
It was a typical Saturday morning at the Waffle House in La Marque, Texas. The morning rush buzzing with orders, the grill sizzling with waffle batter, and the sound of silverware clinging on the plates. All seemed to be going well like any other day, until one of the regular customers spotted a waitress doing something out of the ordinary. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing, and whipped her phone out immediately to catch on camera exactly what was going on. She posted it online and the picture quickly went viral. Once the Internet caught wind of the waitress’s behavior towards another customer, nobody would ever look at her the same.

This one is not for you.” As Detective Treyvon Abscott stepped in the path of Detective Erika Saunders, she stopped. Then again, that was what you did when you hit a brick wall. Her partner was a former college football player, an honorably discharged Marine, and at least four inches taller and seventy pounds heavier than she was. But even with all that going for him, he still braced his weight and put both palms out in front of himself, as if he were protecting his end zone against the likes of a Mack truck. “Dispatch sent me here.” Erika crossed her arms over her chest. “So I know you’re not standing in my way right now. You’re just really not.” Behind her colleague, a run-of-the mill two-story house with an attached two-car garage was strobe-lit in blue, the flashing lights of the squad cars parked in front of the driveway reflecting off the storm windows, turning a family’s home into a disco ball of tragedy. “I don’t care what dispatch said.” Trey’s voice was quiet, but I’m-not-fucking-around deep. “I told you on the phone. I got this on my own.” Erika frowned. “FYI, your detective of the month award could get revoked for this kind of scene hoarding—” “Go home, Erika. I’m telling you, as a friend—” “Of course, I”—she indicated herself —“have never gotten a collegial award. You want to know why?” “Wait, what?” her partner said. Like she was speaking a different language. She dodged around him and spoke over her shoulder as he stumbled over his own feet to turn around. “I’m not a good listener and I don’t like people in my way. That’s why I never get awards.” Marching up the walkway, she heard cursing in her wake, but Trey was going to have to get over himself—and she was surprised by the territoriality. Usually, the two of them got along great. They’d been assigned together since January, after his first partner, Jose de la Cruz, retired following a long and distinguished career. She had no idea what kind of hair Trey had across his ass about this particular— “Hey, Andy,” she said to the uniformed cop at the door. —scene, but she wasn’t going to worry about it. “Detective.” The uniformed officer shifted to the side so she could pass. “You need booties?” “Got ’em.” As she slipped a set on over her street shoes, she noted that the hedges around the entrance were all trimmed and a little Easter flag was pastel’ing itself on a pole off to the left. “Thanks.” The second she entered a shallow foyer, she smelled both vanilla-scented candles and fresh blood—and her brain went to a hypothetical episode of Cupcake Wars where one of the contestants got their hand stuck in a mixer. Care for some plasma with your Victoria sponge? Wait, that would be The Great British Bake Off, wouldn’t it. While her brain played chew toy with all kinds of stupid connections, she let it warm itself up and glanced to the right. The disrupted living room was what she expected in terms of furnishings and decor. Everything was solidly middle class, especially all the framed pictures of two parents and a daughter in the bookshelves, everybody aging up through the years, the kid getting taller and more mature, the parents getting grayer and thicker around the middle. Those photographs were her first clue as to why Trey had tried to put his foot down. Well actually... there had been a couple of others when she’d been getting basic details from dispatch. Ignoring the alarm bells that started to ring in her head, she stepped around a broken lamp. In spite of all the homey-homey, the place looked like a bar fight had gone down in front of the electric fireplace: The flowered couch was out of alignment and its cushions scattered on the rug, one armchair was knocked over, and the cheap glass coffee table was shattered. There was blood splatter on the gray walls and the low-nap carpet. The facedown body in the center of the sixteen-by-twelve-foot room was that of an older white male, the bald spot on the back of the head identifying him as the father according to one of the candids taken at a field hockey game. He had one arm up, the other down by his side, and his clothes were vaguely office, a button-down shirt, it looked like, tucked into polyester-blend slacks. No belt. Shoes were still on. Two long steps brought her in close, and her knees popped as she dropped onto her haunches. The knife sticking out of his back had done quite a bit of work before before being left deep inside his rib cage: There were a good four to five other stab wounds, going by the holes in the shirt and the bloodstains on the cotton fabric. As she took a deep breath, she had a thought that half the oxygen in Caldwell had mysteriously disappeared. “Erika.” Her name was said with an exhaustion she was familiar with. She’d heard that special brand of tired in a lot of people’s voices when they were trying to talk sense into her. “Frenzied attack.” She indicated the pattern of stabbings, even though it wasn’t like there was any confusion about what she was addressing. “By someone strong. While this victim was trying to run away after they’d scuffled.” Erika rose up and went farther into the house. As she passed through an archway that opened into a kitchen, she was careful not to step on any bloodstains. The second body was faceup on the wood laminate flooring in front of the stove, the wife and mother sprawled in a pool of her own blood. The victim had extensive head and neck trauma, her facial features totally unidentifiable, the bones all broken, the flesh pulverized. So much blood covered the front of her that it was hard to make out the pattern on her t-shirt, but the leggings had to be LuLaRoe, given the garish repeat of peaches against a bright blue background. Above her on the cooktop, a glass-lidded saucepan full of what appeared to be homemade Bolognese had boiled over, a black-and-brown halo of the stuff toasted around the heating element’s coil. Behind it, a big pot filled with only two inches of water sat on the largest of the burners, and next to the mess, on the counter, an unopened box of generic-brand spaghetti was beside a cutting board that had half a diced onion on it. The woman had had no clue as she’d chopped the onion, browned the beef, and filled the boiling pot that it was the last meal she’d ever cook for her family. Bile rose into the back of Erika’s throat as she glanced across at the open cellar door, the stairwell lit by an overhead feature mounted to the side wall. “The killer had two weapons,” she said to no one in particular. Mostly so she could get her goiter to calm down. “The knife used on the father and a hammer used here. Or maybe it was a crowbar.” “Hammer,” Trey interjected grimly. “It’s upstairs in the hall.” “She started the water boiling.” Erika went over to the basement steps and breathed in deep. “Then she went down there to the washing machine—which explains the vanilla fragrance. It’s not scented candles. It’s Suavitel laundry detergent. My college roommate, Alejandra, used it all the time.” “Erika—” “She hears the commotion upstairs. Runs up to see what’s going on. By the time she’s on this floor, her husband is dead or in the process of dying and the killer is on her with that hammer.” Erika met Trey’s dark eyes. “There was no damage on the front door so the father let the killer in. Do we have a Ring?” “No.” “Where are the other two bodies—upstairs?” Trey nodded. “But listen, Erika, you don’t need to go—” “You’re on my last nerve saying my name like that. Anytime you want to cut out the pity, I’m ready to be treated like the adult I am instead of the child I was.” She went back out through the living room and took the carpeted steps to the second floor. As soon as she got to the top landing, all she had to do was look down the dim, narrow hallway. At the far end, in a bedroom that was the color of Pepto-Bismol, two bodies were in full view, one on the bed, the other propped up against the wall on the floor. Erika blinked. Blinked again. And then she couldn’t move any part of herself. She wasn’t even breathing. “Let’s go back downstairs,” Trey said softly, right by her ear. When her colleague took her arm, she pulled free of the compassion and went forward. She stopped when she got to the open doorway. The
