Blogging makes me weirder. My friend told me her son drew all over her childhood baby doll with a pen, and my first response was to excitedly ask "Could I borrow the doll?" I did have a legitimate reason for asking- we're testing a permanent ink remover for review and I had not yet tried it on a doll. So wee Elizabeth came to visit (I can't say young Elizabeth as she's almost as old as I am). The young artist in residence had tattooed her with a giveaway ballpoint pen. He didn't just doodle a image here or there, we're talking full-pathology facial tattoos including eyelids (seriously, back away slowly from anyone with these), skull tattoos, leg tattoos, and marks on the hands and soles of the feet resembling stigmata. I figured the inexpensive ink didn't have a chance against my long list of cleaning ideas. My friend's husband had tried a magic eraser which yielded no results. The permanent ink remover did absolutely nothing against the ink. Across a week, I tried almost everything in my normal stain-removal arsenal (I skipped a couple things that seemed potentially damaging to the plastic/vinyl): baking soda paste 409 rubbing alcohol vegetable oil Murphy's oil soap Simple Green dishsoap GoJo handsoap with pumice toothpaste CarpetAid+ waterless hand cleaner (works well on grease stains) non-acetone nail polish remover adhesive remover evaporated milk (works like a charm lifting recent ink stains out of fabrics)The ink's dye soaked deeply into the plastic, staining it so that no amount of surface scrubbing would remove it. Prolonged scrubbing with simple green could lighten it about 50-60% but that did little to improve the doll's overall appearance. I trolled the Internet for answers and came up with one so insane I would normally have passed it up. Next thing I knew I was buying 10% benzyl peroxide acne cream for a doll. A toy collectors' forum suggested that acne cream and sunlight could remove the ink stains without bleaching the doll's skintone or removing painted accents. On an overcast afternoon, I smeared a tiny bit on a test patch and left Elizabeth on our dining room table for the last hour and a half of sunlight. Having been disappointed by every other test, I didn't expect much from this solution with or without sunlight. When I checked Elizabeth, the test spot was entirely free of ink stains. Her plastic seemed otherwise unaltered by the cream. Elizabeth spent yesterday sunbathing in the dining room. The darkest stains took around 4 hours of bright sunlight to disappear. Many of the lighter stains were gone in 2 hours. The top of her head was shadowed by her body, so I used a small regular mirror (don't use a magnifying one for this!) and bounced sunlight to the top of her head while the rest of her graffitied body got full sun. It worked on the same timeline as direct sun exposure. Later, I moved the mirror to give additional illumination to her curving hands. The reflected light could reach some frequently shadowed places. Elizabeth sat down for a quick photo shoot this morning before returning home. Moral of the story? Don't leave pens unattended around toddlers -or- be very cautious about wearing acne cream in direct sunlight. ***This is the independent opinion of Baby Toolkit. I have a few family events coming up, so I won't be around much next week. I'm having a hard time getting the "schedule posts" feature to work since Blogger switched over to the new look (anyone else having this problem?), so I'm going to try to get some extra posts done this week to tide you over while I'm gone. ;) About a month ago or so, I won a lot of BFC Ink dolls on eBay (a couple of them are featured in my header). ;) I was so excited! The price was very reasonable, and all of the girls were in excellent shape. I was especially thrilled that the lot included Calista and Yuko. These dolls are harder to find and normally cost a pretty penny! Here are the four new gals: Kaitlin, Calista, Addison, and Yuko. :) None of the girls came dressed, so I had to provide clothes for them. Thankfully, I had some extra BFC Ink sized clothing. One outfit was one I found after winning the dolls, though... I was in my local Kmart, and they happened to have a few BFC Ink outfits on sale for $2.50 each! I've always liked the "Simply Sweet" outfit, so I picked it up. :) Addison looks adorable in this. (Calista does too! She was the one who tried it first.) ;) I especially love the color and the polka dots on the shirt. I would prefer shorts that were a little bit longer, but these will do for now. I'm not really sure why this set came with bright yellow shoes, :} but I've noticed that the BFC Ink shoes don't always match really well with the outfits they come with. I just love how poseable these dolls are! It makes photographing them so much fun. :) Addison is a really cute doll (and the personal favorite BFC Ink doll of my oldest daughter). Her hair looks very reddish brown in person, which surprised me, because in many of her photos (and even this one!) it looks like a more typical brunette color. She has two curly strands of hair in the front, and the rest is a wavy, half curly look. A bit disappointing, though still pretty. I'm pretty sure that Addison and my new Kaitlin are from the line that came dressed in swimsuits, judging by the differences between their hairstyles and the original dolls' hairstyles. Calista is a gorgeous doll. I've never seen her in person before, but now that I have, I'm definitely impressed. Like the other dolls, she has a few really pretty curly strands of hair towards the front (that make her look nice in the box) and the rest of her hair is just slightly wavy. For now, though, her hair looks nice. I figure if I leave it alone it should last for a while at least. :) I was so pleased when I took a picture of Calista and Nahji together. They make the PERFECT sisters! :) I wanted to take a picture of Calista with Rahel, too. They also look cute together... ...but I think Nahji and Calista look like they were actually made to be sisters. Their skin tone is almost identical! And here is lovely Yuko. This particular doll was customized by her previous owner. She has fake eyelashes and eyeliner (I believe she used colored pencil for the eyeliner). I think the original Yuko is adorable too, but I love how the eye makeup and eyelashes really make her eyes stand out. :) A closer look at her lashes. The only problem I have with them is that her hair gets caught in them constantly! :{ Her previous owner kept her hair partially pulled back to avoid this problem, but I love how her hair looks when it's loose, so I'll probably just deal with the hair/eyelash thing. ;) Yuko is absolutely stunning. :) The additional Kaitlin was a cutie, too. You're probably wondering why I got her when I already have 2 other Kaitlins. Well, first off, she was part of the lot, and I was more interested in the other dolls. That aside, though, I loved that she had the softer facial expression of my first Kaitlin, but had the fully poseable body of the later dolls. You can see what I mean in these next couple of pictures. My first Kaitlin is on the left. I think her expression is still the cutest of all, but new Kaitlin's is pretty close. Much closer than my 2nd Kaitlin's (on the right). See how 2nd Kaitlin's eyebrows curve downward? I think it gives her more of a sassy teen look, while the other two have a gentler, more innocent look. Newest Kaitlin's hair also has less curl and is a little smoother than my first Kaitlin's. Here are the first two Kaitlins, decked out in the other $2.50 outfits from Kmart. Obviously, I won't be keeping all three, but I'm still figuring out which one will be staying. At this point, I'm leaning towards the newest one, just because I really prefer the newer, more poseable joints. I didn't realize how very similar Addison and Kaitlin look in the face. It looks like they have the same face mold. I'm trying to decide if Britt has the same face mold as well. It looks very similar, and yet there's something about her face (aside from the coloring) that seems different than the other girls. Maybe it's just me. ;) So here are the gals I'm currently keeping: Kaitlin, Britt, Calista, Yuko, and Addison. I love the beautiful variety of skin tones and hair/eye color combinations in this group. :) I'm thinking about changing some of their names, but honestly, I haven't had a lot of time to sit down with them and figure all of that out. I do enjoy looking at them on my shelf, though. :) I also may end up getting rid of a couple of them eventually, just because I don't want to get overwhelmed with too many dolls. I want to wait to make that decision for now, though. These dolls are getting harder and harder to find at good prices, and I'd hate to get rid of one and then regret it. ;) A few weeks after this purchase, I was able to get a lovely Nicolette doll (the BFC Ink Pen Pal doll from France). I've always loved the brown eye/blonde hair combination, and the Pen Pal dolls never came to my local stores, so I was very excited to have this little lady join the dolly family. :) I'm so drawn to her sweet little face. :) My Nicolette came with her own custom pink earrings to match her dress. Her dress is a little shorter than I care for, which is too bad, because it's very cute otherwise. I was curious to see how similar Kaitlin and Nicolette would look side by side. They have the same face mold and an almost identical hair color. Their eyes are different colors, and somehow they still looked different enough from each other that I didn't feel like I needed to choose between them. I think the fact that Nicolette's eyebrows and eyelashes are painted a darker shade of brown is helpful. I also think they look like they could be sisters. What do you think? If there's one thing I'd change about Nicolette, it would be her name. I keep thinking of Nicorette gum whenever I say her name. :} Like the other gals, Nicolette is very poseable and photogenic: These dolls are not the highest quality. Their limbs tend to get loose very quickly, and their hair is atrocious. Somehow, though, I keep going back to them. I love the extra options for photos that their poseability brings. I really like their faces, and I love the fact that they make such perfect big sisters for the Hearts For Hearts girls. I think I'd give them a 4 out of 5 stars. The lacking star would be for the hair and joint problems I've mentioned. The hair does best if it is left alone or put in an updo. The joints last the longest if they receive minimal play. Because of these issues, I think (as I've mentioned in previous posts) that these dolls could be frustrating for younger doll enthusiasts, and therefore would be best for careful older children or collectors. Before I had children I dreamed of being a mother that would encourage ingenuity in my children by not getting freaked out over things like this: My six year old wrote the names of her dolls on their foreheads so that she could remember their names while she was playing school with them. She probably would have gotten off pretty easy as it was really an honest mistake in which she stated that she thought it would wash off easily. She would have gotten off easy.... But, the shrug of her shoulders when I told her that ink from an ink pen didn't wash off of dolls landed her owing me the amount of work around the house that it would take to earn the money that these dolls are worth.. My windows have never been so clean! When I called my mother exasperated at my daughter's response to ruining over a hundred dollars of dolls. This is how that conversation went.. Me: Mom! I'm so frustrated with Emma.. She wrote on nine of her dolls with an ink pen! NINE dolls.. She said she was playing school with them and wanted to remember their names. I asked her if she had ever heard of NAME TAGS.. And when I told her that ink doesn't wash off of dolls she just shrugged her shoulders.. DOES SHE THINK MONEY GROWS ON TREES? She now owes me seventeen hours of work so she will know how much work it took for the people that bought her those dolls to earn the money to do so.. And that really isn't even giving her the real picture because I went with current value, not replacement value.. "How can a kid so smart do things so dumb"? Mom: (laughs) I remember a smart kid that did some really dumb things around my house... Me: I know, I'm so sorry you had to put up with Denise (my sister) all those years (laugh). Mom: But, it all makes sense now. That's what Chloe was doing.. Me: What? No, not Chloe, Emma did this.. You know, the six year old that should be past writing on things other than paper! Mom: No, I wasn't going to tell you this because I didn't want you to be upset but when the girls visited on your anniversary, Chloe drew all over the face of my doll from when I was a kid.. Me: WHAT!!! YOU MEAN THE DOLL THAT'S OVER 50 YEARS OLD? THE DOLL THAT YOU PROTECTED FROM US WHEN WE WERE KIDS? Mom: Well, it's really my fault, I never should have let them play with it. It's okay.. Really, it's not a big deal.. Me: You've saved a doll for over 50 years and it's not a big deal that my kids ruined it? It's a big deal to me! OPERATION SAVE THE DOLLS!!! Have you ever tried to remove ink from a doll? It is a task that I previously thought impossible.. CLOROX BLEACH PEN-- NOPE MAGIC ERASER- NADA RUBBING ALCOHOL-- NO DICE FINGER NAIL POLISH REMOVER-- UH-UH TURPENTINE -- NOT A THING GRAFFITY REMOVER-- NO MA'AM But do not be disheartened my friend, I've discovered a miracle!! How did this miracle occur? I have given a many a dolly hairdo but I never anticipated treating a doll with acne cream. But, lo-and-behold, it worked! So, the nitty gritty on how to use this: 1. Pull back the doll's hair and remove any clothing that is near to avoid bleaching it.. 2. Liberally apply 10% benzoyl peroxide acne treatment cream to any areas with ink. Be careful to avoid eyebrows.. We now have a Barbie without eyebrows... So much for Barbie being perfect. After removing one doll's eyebrows, I began to use a q-tip to make sure I avoided any areas that I didn't want to be bleached. 3. Lay the doll in the sun.. Emma's dolls took two applications to completely remove the ink. My mom's took four since Chloe had skillfully and repeatedly scribbled in one spot and it had sat on the doll longer. Just keep reapplying until the ink is completely gone. And, just as it did when I was a teenager, Clearasil saved the day and my mother's childhood memories! Blessings,

Tell me, how could I NOT knit this girl ( Venus of Willendorf Images ), after I found this pattern? The original Venus of Willendorf was found 1908 in Austria, and was made of limestone. You can read more about her here. I really wanted for my Venus to look like stone, and I wanted to use rustic looking handspun for her, to make her extra special. I had some light grey Coopworth in my fiber stash, it must have been one of the first fiber packages I ever bought in 2007. Nasty stuff, as it turned out. Not well prepared at all, but I got enough yarn out of it, to knit my giant Big Momma Venus! I modified her head a little, to look more like the real one. pattern: Venus de Merino by Lara Breese of Dark Twist. or as Ravelry instant download yarn: Coopworth handspun, ~ 80yds (including what you need for sewing) needle: 3.25mm DP (I used smaller needles, than the yarn would call for, to get a tight knit fabric) size : of Big Momma Venus: 9.25" high 8" wide - yes she's bigger than the real one start-finish: Feb. 17-18 *** yarn: handspun "Silver Dollar", 3-ply, (spun this about a year ago, and had it left over from my dad's birthday scarf; needles: 2.75mm DP size: of the little ones: 6" high, 4.5" wide start-finish: Feb. 19-20 (was kind of obsessed and made 3 in two days) *** The little ones are meant as "Good Luck" charms for my family. :o) I'm keeping the big one for myself. Fiber: Gemini Fibers, bought in 2007, my first fiber bought for spinning, I was looking for the cheapest fiber so I could practice spinning on my spindle; thankfully I didn't bother with it too much and moved on to better fiber, because I would not have continued spinning, and given up on it, because it was so frustrating to spin. A lot of veggetable matter and nibs. I think this fiber, prepared better would not be so bad at all.
