The French academic painter Hugues Merle gained acclaim during his lifetime for his idealised depictions of family life and of historical and religious subjects. He was often associated with his friend and rival, William-Adolphe Bouguereau; in fact, their shared dealer, Paul Durand-Ruel, urged Bouguereau to add to his pictorial repertoire Merle's interpretation of familial love, which had defined his most successful Salon entries during the 1840s through the 1960s. Whether imaging modern-day Madonnas with children, Susanna at her bath, or, as here, Mary Magdelene, Merle favoured emotion-filled, often seductive, facial expressions and languid bodies to connote drama and pathos. Indeed, his Mary Magdelene emerges as the enraptured captive of Christ's love. [Heritage Auctions - Oil on canvas, 45.1 x 59.7 cm]
Detail (#1) of Salomé (1909), by Paul Antoine de la Boulaye.
I was just telling my friend who is going on a pilgrim to Rome in April about the image of Mary, the oldest icon of her in Rome, Advocata Nostra, which is at the Dominican Sisters Convent on Via Trionfale on Monte Mario. Paul Badde had alerted me to it. It hit me that Advocata Nostra has everything in common with the miraculous image of Our Lady of Absam which I posted about several days ago. The same nose, eyes and mouth!
"The Penitent", William-Adolphe Bouguereau. The image was probably meant to suggest Mary Magdalene, who was the best-known penitent woman for Victorian viewers.
I wanted to start off my 1480s Florence costume with a Reta – a netted headdress. I figured I’d start off with a (hopefully wearable) mock-up with whatever I had in my ‘stash̵…

Virgin Mary Gets A Pop Culture Makeover
Mary Magdalene as Melancholy is a 1622-1625 painting by Artemisia Gentileschi🎨 - (Italian Baroque Era painter🎨, 1593-1652), showing Mary Magdalene as a personification of Melancholia. It is now in the Museo Soumaya in Mexico City. It is an autograph copy of another work on the subject by the artist now in the Treasury of Seville Cathedral, although X-ray examination has shown that the fabric on the saint's shoulder is wider in the Seville version and was probably added later to fit with the canons of the Catholic Church.
The Master of the Female Half-Lengths, active ca.1530-1540, was a Dutch Northern Renaissance painter or likely a group of painters of a workshop. The name was given in the 19th century to identify the maker or makers of a body of work consisting of 67 paintings to which since 40 more have been added.
The word "icon" has a number of different meanings today, from the symbols on your computer screen to celebrities, and, of course, visual representations of religious figures. Soasig Chamaillard repairs old statues of the Virgin Mary and in the process turns them into something distinctly different than their original appearance. Her mission isn't to mock Mary or the meaning she holds for many people, but rather to examine notions of the feminine and the role of women in society and culture. As some one who's sitting in front of a bunch of action figures that, to me, represent important figures, the juxtaposition of pop culture with culture culture, is something I always find fascinating.

This unusual figure represents saint Mary Magdalene as a mystic ascetic. According to legend, the repentant sinner lived a secluded life in the cave of Sainte-Baume, clothed only by her hair. Every day she was raised up in the sky by angels to hear the heavenly chorus. The statue appeared on the German art market in the 19th century and was purchased by the Louvre in 1902.

The possibility of Mary Magdalene being black and of Ethiopian lineage is plausible according to extensive research by Bettye Johnson, author of Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls and an Independent Publisher Book Award 2006 winner.

The Gospel of Mary was discovered in a Cairo bazaar in 1896. If it is genuine, then Mary Magdalene had a crucial role in early Christianity.
