Often I get asked “What is modern quilting?” What does it mean to call myself a modern quilt pattern designer? Modern quilting still uses the basics of traditional quilting but I think a modern quilt pattern plays by its own rules. Today I am looking into both Traditional and Modern Quilting to find the differences. You know a modern quilt when you see one! The Modern Quilt Guild defines modern quilting in this way: Modern quilts are primarily functional and inspired by modern design. Modern quilters work in different styles and define modern quilting in different ways, but several characteristics often appear which may help identify a modern quilt. These include, but are not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work.
The Campfire Glow Quilt Pattern by Meghan Buchanan of Then Came June. The Campfire Glow Quilt Pattern used two traditional blocks, the 9 Patch and Sawtooth Star, to create a fun modern quilt. The pattern includes a Modern Solid Design option and a Stash Buster option. This is the perfect pattern for a newer quilter or for a seasoned quilter trying to find inspiration again! This pattern requires beginner quilting knowledge. The pattern assumes quilter has knowledge of basic piecing and can use consistent 1/4" seam allowances. The pattern requires yardage for the Modern Solid version or for the stash buster, it provides multiple fabric cut options. Material requirements on second image. **This is a downloadable PDF, being instantly delivered to your email after your purchase is complete. Anna Maria Horner Improv Quilt This one of a kind quilt is completed and ready to ship to you! It may be one of my all-time favorite creations and is made in an improvisational pattern using many different fabrics from my absolute favorite designer, Anna Maria Horner, in a vibrant jewel tone and earth palette. The binding is made from coordinating fabric and is machine stitched to both sides for durability. The batting in the middle of the quilt is 100% cotton that is thin and lightweight, but also warm. This quilt is backed in a beautiful large bohemian floral print. It is quilted with cotton thread in simple straight lines with rainbow thread on the front and white and rainbow thread on the back. The measurements are approximately 51 inches wide by 63 inches long. This quilt would make a lovely accent draped over a chair or the foot of a bed. It is also the perfect size for curling up with by yourself in your favorite spot with a good book and a cup of tea. It is sure to add a bit of bohemian flair or grown-up whimsy to any room. This quilt would also make a wonderful, comforting gift for that special someone in need of some cheer. All of my items are handmade with joy and love in my smoke-free home studio. Each quilt is unique and handcrafted with the utmost care to be beautiful, useful, and long-lasting. My items are made to be sturdy enough for regular use and beautiful enough to be heirlooms. You will know as soon as you see this that you have purchased a lifetime treasure! If this is a gift, I would love to gift package it for you and include a handwritten message chosen by you. Just include your desired message in a note at checkout and send it to your preferred shipping address. Care Instructions: Wash in cool water on a delicate cycle and tumble dry on low or lay flat to dry to keep your quilt looking beautiful for years to come. Iron if desired. It will become softer with each washing and is made to stand up to much use and love. If dried by machine, the quilt will shrink slightly on its first drying and will develop the gathers and puckers characteristic of handmade quilts. Hi friends, So I finally finished up this super scrappy version of my Snowflake Quilt and am excited to share it with you today! This one was such a treat to make, using nothing but fabrics from my stash and the scrappy version of the pattern. I love super scrappy quilts like this because you can throw in any fabric design and print as long as it contains the right colors! I chose an aqua blue I had several shades of, light and dark versions of the color really add a fun dimension to the project. I chose a nice mix of white and light cream fabric all featuring some sort of black text or print on it - so very low volume, and then chose some aqua prints that all had a similar shade. The scrappy version of this quilt does take a bit more time because of the smaller piecing and making sure to really have a nice mix up of the fabrics, but I do believe its so worth it! I feel like the snowflake almost looks frozen! For my quilting I chose to do a nice grid pattern going from point to point on the squares. This was easy to do because of the smaller squares - I just went from corner to corner. My backing was a fantastic fabric I found at Joann - a luxe flannel. I pre-washed it and dried it since flannel is notorious for shrinking up more than quilting cotton so I figured I better be safe than sorry. It washed and dried beautifully and is so thick and soft - really looking forward to using this brand again. The thickness along with the 100% cotton batting I used made this a perfect winter quilt to snuggle up under. I have made quite a few versions of this quilt so far - I can be a little crazy when it comes to testing my own patterns. I will honestly say though that this one is a personal favorite. My son Grey gets this one since it is extra snuggly and warm, I hope he loves it as much as I loved making it. Thanks for stopping by today friends! I am working on some new blog tutorials and an upcoming holiday sale next week - make sure to sign up for my newsletter below to get a sneek peek at everything and a great 15% discount in my pattern shop. I made a Colorwash of exclusively Kaffe Fassett fabrics many of which are early and out of print. It is not the Kaffe Collective which includes fabric by Brandon Mably and Philip Jacobs. It is exclusively Kaffe. This wallhanging is made from the kit of 2.5" squares that will be offered to students of Colorwash 360. I used one of the larger prints on the back and I thought the black Fern print was perfect for the binding. Are you interested in making a Colorwash wallhanging too? If you haven't heard, I have an Online Course launching on October 1, 2018 called 'COLORWASH 360'. You'll learn gradation from light to dark (value) as well as gradation from one color another...And, how to select fabrics that work best. 'COLORWASH 360' opens for pre-sale on September 1. Subscribers will receive 24 hours early access to sign up for the course and purchase the limited edition kits of pre-cut squares or larger blocks to cut multiple squares yourself. Both Batik and Kaffe Fassett Fabric kits will be available in limited quantities to students of COLORWASH 360 only. I don't know if I've told you before, but I learned how to quilt while I lived in Japan in 2002. Japanese housewife culture, including their approach to quilting, has always fascenated me. I should have been an anthropologist and studied that more intensely, I know, but I got caught up in trying to communicate and became an ESL teacher instead. Anyway.. I discovered flickr in 2006 and the quilts I saw there lead me to start blogging about quilting. Tonight I want to share a handful of my favorite quilt photos from the Tokyo International Quilt festivals held each year in January. One year I'll make it there myself, but until then, I will live vicariously through Jennifer and Jan. My Lincoln quilt is on the road to the quilters! The pattern came from Barbara Brackman and so did some of the fabric. Please read about the quilt on her blog here. It has only been a little over a year since I won the pattern and fabric so I am right on my normal schedule! I opted to make my blocks 8" instead of 12, so I made a few more. My finished quilt size is approx 64x 72. I had some of this awesome Lincoln fabric from my friend Jill and couldn't think of a more appropriate quilt to use it on. And I added some homespuns, one which had this slice in it I noticed while ironing the completed backing. I used some fusible and the same fabric and fused it closed from the opposite side. I'm sending it off to Diane, Butterfly Threads Quilting to do baptist fans for me. I knew this quilt would need a simple all over pattern. I'll be adding this quilt to my "Reruns; Quilts Inspired by the Past" lecture!! I hope you all are having a terrific week.
