SUE was trained and has worked as a dietitian, with a degree in food and nutrition. See profile MYRNA was a diagnosed celiac, like our mother. She was an expert baker and excellent cook. She passed on September 23, 2021. See profile We live a lot like our folks did in the 40's and 50's - gardening, canning, cooking from scratch, hanging up the wash, modest square footage, fairly simple wants, sharing good books, coffee time with friends, picnicking, taking a Sunday drive in the country instead of going to the mall, etc. We don't feel like we've given up anything. Part of the secret is to live in a community where folks are like-minded, the other secret is knowing you can enjoy other people's landscaping, beautiful homes, etc., but you don't have to OWN everything you see. Simple wants cut down on costs, maintenance, storage, care, clutter and let you sleep at night. I'm watching my neighbor wash his expensive truck with a power washer right now; a sponge and a bucket also do the job, saves just as much water, is simpler to store and is multiuse, and costs a lot less. (And also easier to use, a bucket doesn't have to be plugged in somewhere and there is no hose to drag around). We don't want to be pioneers - but we could certainly live simpler, more fulfilling lives. Start here to read our blog from the very beginning...

Notes : all heights have been gauge-calculated to keep surprises to a minimum during blocking; in-chart decreases tended to be more art than science, given the stitch count errors -- I only ever worked decreases in the โwhiteโ sections Errata for Size 6 : โliveโ sleeve st count s/b 64 sts; total yoke st count before dec. s/b 334 sts (which means 10 st dec. to pre-chart sizing); @ row 29 in chart, 1 dec./6 sts yields 270 sts -- @ row 31 in chart, 2 dec./9 sts yields 210 sts -- @ row 38 in chart, 2 dec./7 sts yields 150 sts not the 162 stated -- I had to decrease 48 sts across row 38 to get to the intended stitch count Mods : adapted Louise Lavenderโs Soot Sprite Hexipuff chart to create a 30 st repeating chart which starts 2 rounds above the corrugated rib and allows for the 8 st decrease which occurs over the course of the chart; omitted sleeve cap creation d/t choice to create long sleeves, so did provisional crochet cast-on of โliveโ sleeve sts for both arms, worked round body as per pattern, and picked up and knit from provisional cast-on chains where required; worked 14 repeats of my Totoro chart from round 8 of the Paper Dolls chart (adapted from Brellaโs Norwegian Totoro Mittens chart ); worked round 40 chart decreases in round 44; worked cocoknitsโ short rows for the back; worked full sleeves by casting on an additional 10 sts/sleeve @ underarm and decreasing 2 sts every 10th row until 48 sts/sleeve (per EZโs suggest 1/5 body st count); worked an additional 6 rows in St st/sleeve before beginning corrugated rib Nov 29/13 : the yarn arrived today. Iโm so excited! Nov 30/13 : after achieving post-blocking gauge with a 2mm (US0!) needle, Iโve cast on and begun. Iโm going to have to simply knit tighter for what is supposed to be the next needle size down. That 200+ st provisional cast-on was a doozy. Dec 1/13 : wise of Ms. Davies to make the most tedious part of the project come first. Also, would love some proper sunshine to be able to photograph the corrugated rib hem. Dec 3/13 : after three days worth of corrugated rib, Iโve begun the colourwork near the hem. Incidentally, 222 stitches of corrugated rib for 22 rows, plus the cast-on and one row plain, resulted in the use of 63g of my 100g skein of Wasabi ( Jan 2/14 correction : 13g of a 50g skein were used) . Hopefully, I have enough to work the sleeve hems and collar. Update : I love the effect of the grey soot sprites on the lighter grey background. I can already tell Iโm going to have a hard time parting with this sweater. Dec 4/13 : the soot sprite chart is done and I am officially done using Graphite for this project! Iโm surprised the colourwork only took me two days and HOLY CATS, but the stockinette is zipping along surprisingly quickly (she said, dooming herself). :) Dec 9/13 : there is errata in the 6th size option where the sleeves join the yoke, so Iโm working at figuring out what the stitch count ought to be at that point and what I should do for the pattern repeat. Once thatโs done, Iโll have to sort out how to arrange and space the Totoros, so tonightโs likely to end up being math-y, rather than involving actual knitting. Update : Iโm just about to start the colourwork on the yoke and realized that means Iโm probably more than 40% done. :) The progress meter has been updated to 50% done because I have yet to sort out how the Totoros will fit into the stitch count. Dec 11/13 : I think Iโve finally sorted out the math for the Totoro chart, so will start working on that tonight. Home stretch! Dec 14/13 : seriously, there are stitch count errata for this size all over the place . Itโs annoying as Hell to have to figure out what the intended decreases are. The good news is that Iโve finished the Totoro chart and have โsealedโ it with 2 rows of stockinette. The bad news is that Iโm going to need to rip out the 2 rows of stockinette to do the decreases in row 43 which probably ought to have been denoted in the colourwork chart at row 40 (theyโre in the written pattern). The sweater, such as it is, looks fantastic so far and Iโm getting really close to finishing! Dec 15/13 : I had to go online to double-check the technique for whatโs been my favourite show-row method so far , and realized that Iโve yet to attempt posting comprehensive notes on this project. I suspect Iโm going to miss a bunch of stuff, but I have to try, at the very least. Update : I really hate working corrugated rib. Dec 16/13 : completed the i-cord bind off for the neck last night and picked up stitches from the provisional cast-on at the bottom (mental note: use mercerized cotton for all provisional cast-ons, wool sucks). I hope to finish the bottom hemโs i-cord today and maybe, maybe get started on the sleeves (two-at-a-time, no less). Dec 17/13 : Iโve officially begun the two-at-a-time sleeves! Dec 19/13 : realized last night that there was no way in Hell Iโd be able to complete the sleeves with the amount of Ash I had left over, so I ordered more with the clientโs blessing a few minutes ago. Itโs supposed to ship tonight. Dec 23/13 : ice storms certainly do make one productive! Iโve used up all of the Ash I currently have on-hand, so Iโve got to wait until the last skein comes in before I can finish this project. Jan 1/14 : yarn came in yesterday, so Iโm back on the horse today. Jan 2/14 : Iโm almost done! Iโm almost done! The corrugated rib for the sleeves is done (doing that two-at-a-time sucks, by the way), so Iโve just got the i-cord bind-offs to work, two ends to weave in, and blocking. Jan 3/14 : the sweater is blocking now! Jan 5/14 : I probably could have said this sweater was done yesterday, but I want it to be bone-dry to survive being boxed up and shipped. I love this sweater and am looking forward to one day making one for myself, but perhaps with different motifs.
RAINBRIOCHE is a large crescent shaped shawl that can be wrapped around the neck several times. The pattern combines ribbed stripes with brioche knitting. The right side features small colorful stripes and a straight brioche pattern. The edge pattern gives the shawl its feminine design. What is the idea about this shawl? Itยดs all about colors - I started with a skein of speckled yarn which combined many different colors - then I was looking for matching colors in my stash and arranged them as a rainbow. The shawl is made of two skeins of fingering weight yarn by Madelinetosh: a light speckled color, a bright red color for the edge section and colorful leftovers. Due to its symmetrical shape, you donยดt have to count too much and above all the pattern allows some mindless knitting to travel with โฆ and I love to wear it! Repetitive increases are giving the shawl its crescent shape. Using the bright red color, the applied I-cord is then worked across for a clean finish! You end up with a large, gentle curved feminine shawl. I am sure, you will love it! MEASUREMENTS Version shown 83โ / 210cm wingspan length, 27โ/70cm along Center, Measurements taken after blocking. 50% off all knit.love.wool patterns! Use coupon code: KNIT Anaashah is inspired by some of my favorite meadow plants - lupine, fireweed, and wild grasses. This sweater is knit seamlessly and from the top down starting with a simple rolled neckline. The pattern includes options for short or long sleeves - choose whatโs best for your climate and lifestyle. This sweater is light enough to wear on cool summer nights while being equally useful for layering during the colder months. My example is shown with 5โ positive ease. With a gauge of 22 sts over 4โ / 10cm, fingering or sport weight yarn is suitable for this design. Itโs especially well suited to handyed yarn: merino singles or plied fingering weight will both yield good results. Anaashah is the Native Alaskan Eyak peopleโs word for wildflower. Forget Dooce. We mommy bloggers owe our very existence to a housewife from Ohio named Erma Bombeck. Were she alive, Erma would have turned 83 today. Though she wasn't the first "housewife humorist", she was certainly the most popular, and pioneered the wry, honest, eloquent style that we all aspire to, finding humor in the mundane. She wrote the newspaper column "At Wits End" from 1965 until her death in 1996 from complications from a kidney transplant, and numerous books with excellent titles: "I Lost Everything in the Post-Natal Depression", "The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank", "Motherhood:...

The hyperlink above will take you the supplemental materials (charts, variations, deleted scenes, and geeknotes), please download the free PDF attached to this page, โWraptor Directorโs Cut.โ To view the Wraptor pattern itself, please visit the knitty pattern page: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEw13/PATTwraptor.php Wraptor is the love child of two other knitty sock patterns, Skew and Longitudinal. Itโs what happens when you take classic sideways sock construction and work it on the bias. This pattern does not require expert knitting skills, but it does require strong spatial skills and/or a willingness to trust the patternโs instructions even if they seem wrong to you. It might be hard to believe that it will turn into a sock, but trust me, it will. Iโve done the math. I canโt emphasize enough the importance of doing all of the following before you cast on: Knit a swatch. Match stitch gauge. Donโt just measure row gauge when relaxed and call it done. Stretch your swatch as diagrammed in the pattern to make sure it reaches at least 6 1/4โ. (If it doesnโt, there are course corrections available -- but my recommendation is to try to match stretched row gauge.) Errata in the pattern PDF Page 6, there are a few places where I say โturn to WSโ on a WS row. Hopefully itโs evident that these are typos and itโs supposed to say โturn to RS,โ sorry about that! In the section Knitting the Mate: Page 13, the cast on diagram was accidentally moved up a few lines; it belongs right below โFlip your cast-on over so the purl side is facing you. It should look something like this:โ Note that the diagram reflects what the cast on looks like after all stitches are cast on and the needles are flipped over so that you are looking at the purl side. Page 14, in section Stage 3, just under โSetup 1: Adjust Stitchesโ there is a reference to โThis should be your total stitch countโ but no corresponding image. This line of text doesnโt actually belong here. As you work the mate, refer to the stitch count diagrams for each row for the first sock, but be sure to view from the purl side.

The sizing as noted above provides 1โ (2.54cm) of negative to 1โ (2.54cm) of positive ease, depending on your measurements, which results in a comfortably fitted garment. If youโd like a less fitted version, I suggest either blocking aggressively or going up a size or two. For comparison, the original fingering weight version of the Ripple Crop Top has about 5-7โ (12.7-17.8cm) of positive ease. Materials: DK or Worsted weight yarn, circular needles, stitch markers, scrap yarn or stitch holders, removable stitch markers, extra needle for 3-needle bind off, darning needle Suggested Yarn Use any worsted yarn you can achieve gauge with. I chose to knit my samples in a DK (light worsted.) I used a 100% fine superwash plied merino DK for one sample, and a budget cotton DK for another. Many of my testers used regular worsted, and some even used an aran weight. A lighter weight will produce a lighter fabric, and heavier weight will produce a heavier fabric. January/Februaryย 2010 I WOULD LIKE TO THANK everyone who has made the journey up to Highgate to visit our shop. We love meeting our readers and talking to you about the talented artists we have featured in the magazine over the years. As well as a shop, 162 Archway Road is where we put the magazine together and as such I cannot always guarantee to be available whenever you drop by. If you are making a special journey and would like to talk, do call ahead and let us know so we can arrange to make you feel welcome. It is exciting to greet a new decade. Although Selvedge was not even an idea ten years ago it has certainly changed my life over the last decade. It is interesting to reflect how our lives might change over the next ten years. A new generation of artists and designers will create work destined to enrich our lives. To celebrate the turning of the decade we asked ten of our friends, what would be left in their lives if they eliminated all non-essentials. What remained is a collection of the timeless, the simple, special and, above all, personal textiles. One of the things we are hoping for in 2010 is greater economic stability and, with that in mind, would like to thank the readers and advertisers who have continued to support the magazine during recent turmoil. In this issue we look back to a time when resources were scarce and women made the most of what they had, for themselves and others. Itโs worth remembering the brave and stalwart Land Girls in their corduroy breeches, tending the fields and those who embroidered maps for British airmen and maintained morale by stitching in the Anderson shelters. There is a real fascination for this period in our history as demonstrated by the re-enactors, who recreate the clothing of the period in minute detail. We also touch on other companies who have stood the test of time such as Smedley, while in Bespoke Living, we offer a glimpse into the life of tailor Timothy Everest who produces garments that are future classics. Everest is the first of many gentlemen in this issue; Men of the Cloth, introduces Ian Batten, Guy Hills and other talented men with a real passion for cloth. We hope to see you in 2010...
