Perhaps now more than ever before, a staycation feels like the rarity we're yearning for most. A welcome change of scenery, the freedom to pack up the car and hit the open road, bound for sandy beaches and balmier weather. For Chicago-based interior designer Kate Marker, the ability to escape the bitter cold and head to her Lake Michigan vacation home for the summer is a privilege not taken for granted."We had been vacationing in the area for years and would look every time we were in Michigan for spaces," the designer begins. "Once we were ready to move forward, we contacted a broker in the area to show us some options. Once we scouted Union Pier, we drove by and just fell in love with the curb appeal, the lush gardens, and inviting fence."One look at Marker's weatherboard retreat — sitting proudly on a tree-lined street, awash in navy blue paint, and strung with festoon lights — and it's arguably the quintessential Midwest vacation home. Towering trees decorate the front yard, while vintage hammocks swing in the breeze. Marker worked hard to cultivate a space that not only promotes rest and respite for her family of four but also a space that echoes her own design ethos and style. Inside, it's 1,400-square-feet of vacation vibes."We opened up the ceiling to allow for a vaulted ceiling and took down a wall between the kitchen and living area," Marker explains, of the structural changes made to her 1920s cottage. "We also reoriented the master bedroom and closed in other areas.""Being that I was the client, I needed to be cost-conscious but also hate to forego implementing cool pieces," the designer admits. "It definitely forced me to be creative while mixing high and low. Some of the economical pieces that I took a chance on ended up far exceeding my expectations — namely the dining room light fixture I sourced on Amazon, of all places."
