Welcome to Week 24 of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge!! The plan for this week was to have a good mix of sewing and art-ing. Let's see how that worked out... SUNDAY - Sew Some Love Sunday Zooming with Knittingsuek started my week off right: MONDAY - Mail Call Monday Work was followed by laundry and blogging. Finishing today's post then went upstairs to the studio. Quilting??? Art-ing?? What will it be? First, I prepped something Light GREEN and Light BLUE for quilting and chose these two threads... And then I did some Light GREEN watercolor painting in my Altered Book Journal. These Funky Florals were from a Workshop Week 2023 class with Megan Wells: TUESDAY - Work was followed by the last of the laundry and finishing up the last two "cards" from the Index Card a Day Challenge. There some Light BLUE acrylic paint hiding in this moonlit night sky: WEDNESDAY - Wonderful Wednesday Today was my day off and I took full advantage of the time! Below, you will notice another try at Light GREEN and Light BLUE watercolor in my Altered Book Journal along with my valiant attempt at the Drawing Drop Caps class from Workshop Week: I did take a break in the classes this afternoon long enough to meet for my weekly Zoom with LeeAnna @ Not Afraid of Color: THURSDAY - Work and a couple of art classes online. Portraiture Basics by @pbandjillian was amazing! While I probably should have chosen a mechanical pencil instead of a plain old No. 2 pencil... I think the likeness is pretty amazing: Then... I was back for more Light GREEN watercolor painting, but no sewing: FRIDAY - Work was followed by more art-ing. Sewing couldn't get a stitch in edgewise this week! Today's effort was a mash-up of Day 17's ICAD prompt and @juliemariottart's Sunflower Acrylic Painting from Workshop Week 2023. I'm pretty sure she didn't mean for it to be done in acrylic marker on paper the size of an index card, but that's what worked for me: SATURDAY - It's LINK PARTY day for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge! I hope you will join me in visiting Angela @ So Scrappy to see what the RSC Quilters have been up to this week. Until next time... Get SCRAPPY!!
Hello cyber friends! I have got the answer for that BIG question, how do I use up my ever growing stash? Ok here it is, make a junk journal! Doing so, will provide you with hours of entertainment as you sort through your stash and wonder what on earth prompted you to buy some things and with other things, you'll be so tickled that you finally got to use that special item! Those bits and pieces of leftover paper collections are perfect in a junk journal. These journals are so easy to make if you use Sizzix's XL journal die designed by Eileen Hull. You just cut out two chip or mat board covers, add your favorite design paper inside and out and then assemble with elastic bands. The process is so easy, I am guessing that if you give it a try, you will be addicted as am I!! Though this is my 1st junk journal, it's my 4th journal using this die, in less than a month. Can you say addicted?! So the next question is, what is a junk journal? Well it's pretty much like its name, its a journal of junk. They are often made from old music sheets, paper bags, maps, note papers, junk mail, really anything goes! I chose to use scraps of scrapbook paper that I have accumulated over the years along with bits and pieces from my very old embellishment stash! You can then use the journal for whatever you want. I am using mine simply as a conversation piece. It's filled with quotes and pictures and just fun "stuff". I had so much fun searching for just the right "thing" in my stash of "stuff" that I haven't touched in years. Sometimes I was wondering, did I really buy that, what was I thinking?? But, seriously, what a great way to use up my stash! These journal dies have been selling like hot cakes and it's been hard to get your hands on one. The Funkie Junkie Boutique has one in stock as I am writing this. I made this book for me but I am also entering it in the current Frilly and Funkie challenge, Read Any Good Books Lately, which is to "create a vintage or shabby chic project that depicts a favorite book or use book pages on your project, alter a book or even make a journal or journal page! " I made a video to share my journal with you and hopefully inspire you to make your own junk journal. Here are a few of my favorite pages. I did age some paper to use in my journal. I simply took copy paper, dipped it in tea and then dried in the oven for a few minutes. That gave me gorgeous aged paper. The fun thing about junk journals, is that there are no rules. Just have fun, be creative, put your imagination to work! Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my journal! I really appreciate it.

The dogs and I headed out in the cool of the morning, with dew still heavy on the grass and deep shade of pines, maples, sourwoods and oaks stretching all the way across the pipeline field. While I knelt to inspect a 4" puffball, Daisy and Stewie dashed ahead of me. This is a good thing. I should always keep an eye on them because sometimes, when he is deep into play, Stewie is clueless to his surroundings. Recently Stewie knocked my legs out from under me while I was busy watching two Tiger Swallowtails on a Joe Pye. Out of the blue Stewie slid into me like a baseball runner slamming a first baseman while sliding into first. Down I went, into the dust. The impact seemed to surprise Stewie as much as it surprised me! Now, when I hear them running behind me I look QUICK to see if he is paying attention to where he's going. It is much more peaceful (and makes more sense) to let the dogs run ahead of me so I can keep an eye on them. Back to this morning...it was noisy! Crickets in the field and cicadas in the trees... Red-bellied woodpeckers chirring as they ate grubs from dead branches. A Carolina Wren's insistent warning trill echoed from the woods nearby. I think the dogs threatened the bird's calm morning as much as I did back on that spring day when I learned to identify the wren's warning/distress call - the day when I walked out and sat on the top step of my studio and didn't realize a mama wren was teaching her babies to fly right there. She landed on the trunk within six feet of me and fussed and fussed and fussed. "What's with her," I wondered. I'm a little dense, and it took a few minutes for me to finally see two baby Wrens taking short test-flights from limb to limb, and to realize, "Oh, it's me!" This morning's call was exactly the same. I settled on the far hill beyond Meetinghouse Creek to draw the Whorled Coreopsis which seemed to have fallen over from the weight of it's blooms. The dogs settled beside me and the peace of nature's birdsongs, cicada trills and whispering breeze helped me become calm and meditative as I studied the leaf pattern. I discovered the tiniest crab spider hiding out in the center of one of the flowers, and was wondering what bug had eaten the small holes in the leaves when I heard a discordant sound in the sky. The sound got louder and louder and almost hurt my ears. I looked up to see a low-flying jet with a loud, high-pitched whine that accompanied the regular jet-engine sounds. I have heard other jets pass over with the same noise and have always gotten a sick feeling that there was something awfully wrong with the engine, and I usually have to turn off my vivid imagination that insists on feeding me scenes of plane crashes, horror and mayhem. Today the sound brought to mind instead the horrible events of ten years ago, the anniversary of which I didn't really want to be part of my journaling today. The peace of nature can soothe, and usually it's enough... drawing in nature is meditation... The real world can be harsh. I went back to drawing and tried to forget the noisy jet. Others passed overhead but were high enough (or in good enough condition) that I didn't hear anything disturbing, and soon my inner peace returned. At the same time I couldn't help but think about all the people who, on September 11, 2001, lost not only their lives, but the chance to put their faces into the cool morning breezes, the chance to listen to bird songs, and to walk with their dogs, families or friends without fear. With that in mind, with this post I send out peace and nature's beauty to all Middlewood Journal readers, as well as hope for the future of our great country. Other things from Middlewood... What is a Junk Journal? A junk journal is typically a book made up of all different types of papers and material, that might otherwise have ended up in the bin. In this blog post, I share how I use my junk journal and all the different types of ephemera and decoration that I include.
