Hosta 'June' is a wildly popular, creamy-centered UK-discovery sport of the old standard Hosta 'Halcyon'. Each leaf emerges with blue edges and a brilliant creamy center that gradually changes to dark chartreuse. This is one of those shockingly beautiful hostas that stands out as soon as you spot it in the garden. We recommend some morning sun for best coloration. The 3' wide clumps are topped with light violet flowers on 20" scapes in early summer...attractive to hummingbirds. Maintenance: Other than clearing away the dead foliage in fall, it should be a maintenance free perennial. Voles and deer are two pests that will need to be addressed if they are a problem in your area. If you experience hail on your hosta, they can be immediately cut to the ground, and they will re-flush with new leaves. If the hail occurs late in the summer, you may be better off to just leave the foliage intact instead of force new growth when the plant is preparing to go dormant. Old flower stalks are best removed for appearance sake, although these have no impact on the growth of health of the plant. Growing Conditions: Like many hostas, it thrives in light, open shade. Moist, rich, compost enhanced soils are best. It will not thrive in deep or very dry shade. Natural Impacts: Bees are the main pollinators for all hostas, and they are great for attracting these pollinators to your garden.

Now, one of the great hostas has been made even better. We are pleased to offer Hosta 'Earth Angel', a marvelous white-edged mutation of Hosta 'Blue Angel'. Each 5' wide clump is composed of thick, wide, pointed blue leaves, each surrounded by a 1" wide, creamy border (yellow in spring). Hosta 'Earth Angel' is the first giant blue hosta to have a border...stand up and cheer! Maintenance: Hosta 'Earth Angel' is essentially a maintenance free perennial. Once the plant has gone dormant in fall, you may wish to remove the old foliage, which helps tidy the garden. Old flower stalks may be removed after flowering, which we feel helps with clump appearance. Growing Conditions: Hosta always grow better in rich, moist soil. They thrive best in clay or amended clay soils, but amended sandy loam can be successful if additional compost or other organic nutrients are added. Dry soils are not problematic for a short time, but hostas will decline if the soil is kept dry over an extended period. Light shade to a couple of hours of early morning sun are best. Dark shade will not result in a satisfactory plant. Garden Value: Hostas like 'Earth Angel' are great to brighten a woodland garden. Their bold texture makes a nice garden foil to more airy-textured perennials. Natural Impacts: Hosta flowers are always a great source of nectar for honeybees.
