LDS Relief Society Activity - This Little Piggy
Being a Relief Society President is a learning experience. Here's what I learned.
This is an article co-authored by Adam Ellsworth, a full-time attorney and former elders quorum president; and Ryan Gottfredson, Ph.D., a leadership professor. Did you feel that? That was the heavy weight of responsibility being placed on your shoulders. As a new elders quorum or Relief Society president, you may feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount […]

Emmeline Wells overcame great loss and trial by giving and serving. As Woman's Exponent editor and general president of the Relief Society, she was a power in the woman's rights movement, writer of distinction and example of determination and faith.
I had to throw together a Relief Society Activity super fast, and this is what we did. It turned out AWESOME!!! I took my ideas from these two blogs; http://pininspired.blogspot.com/2012/05/walk-day-in-my-shoes-rs-activity.html http://www.somewhatplanned.com/2015/09/lds-church-in-her-shoes-relief-society-night/ This was our fun invitation to get the sisters excited! Our stake at that time was gathering donations for Safety Net so we encouraged the sisters to bring a pair of shoes to donate, and any other donations they had. We received a ton of great donations! The dessert for this event was just WAY to fun! We made high heel cupcakes! I am a huge fan of NOFADE cupcake liners. Totally worth the extra cents. You can find these at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Party stores... I decided to make 2 kinds of cupcakes. Chocolate Oreo and Strawberry Lemonade. So easy. Just make the cake like normal, but add a pudding mix! YUM! Oreo Frosting: 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup butter Pinch of Salt 5 Tbsp of milk 1 tsp vanilla 5 cups powdered sugar 1/4 cup Karo corn syrup Cream together shortening and butter. Add pinch of salt and vanilla. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk. Blend well. And corn syrup last, beating an additional 3-4 minutes. Then add finely crushed oreos. Add to your taste! Spread or pipe onto cupcakes. Strawberry Lemonade Frosting 1 cup real butter 1/2 cup seedless Strawberry Jam (You can use seeds, totally a preference) 3-4 cups powdered sugar Mix all ingredients together until fluffy. Spread or pipe onto cupcakes. Add lemon zest to the top of cupcakes for the lemon flavor! We put them together at the church on the table they would be displayed on, because they are fragile. You don't want to have to move them a bunch. Simply frost a simple edge around a Milano Cookie . Found at most grocery stores. cut your Pirouette Waffers in half but at a 45 degree angle. Simply frost the cupcake to your liking. Then place the Milano cookie in the back at an angle, then put some frosting on the 45 degree angle of the Pirouette Waffer and stick that to the bottom of the Milano cookie. It really is so simple, and so cute, and everyone LOVED them! The night of the event, we set up two rows of chairs in a semi-circle, had a few fun high heels next to the shoe quotes, and then the fun high heel cupcake display. We gathered together, sang "Faith in Every Footstep" I gave a little tiny talk about not judging others, walking a mile in their shoes, "what if her story, were my story." Then everyone came up and shared their own shoe story. (Those that wanted to. Most people did!) Then we ate fruit, and high heel cupcakes!!! I thought it turned out to be a super fun night. Some of the stories brought the spirit, others just made you laugh. Stories of shoe being worn for temple service, river rafting trips, a husband buying them after noticing a wife admiring them... so many fun stories. A fun fun night! Here are some of the printables I made to use that night;
Our Relief Society decided on the theme "You are Kneaded" for the birthday celebration.
Last month I was looking for a getting to know you game that I could do with a large group of women for Relief Society. After searching for something we could play I came up with my own game. It is called: It is a spin off of the "This or That" game. Here is how it works: We started by having everyone stand on whatever side of the line they wanted. Then I asked everyone to “switch sides if” the statement applied to them. After some of the statements they were asked to tell someone next to them a little more about themselves. I wasn’t sure if the game would go well, but it ended up being a lot of fun and got everyone talking. It was really neat to see who switched sides on some of the statements and who had the same things in common with each other and with you. Here are some of the statements: You like to cook You prefer summer more than winter You have been on a mission… if you switched sides tell someone where You have 4 or more kids You prefer dogs more than cats You were born in (the state you live)…if you didn’t switch sides tell someone where You like to sew You have any grandchildren… if you switched sides tell someone how many You prefer spring more than fall You have ridden a horse You have lived in another state…if you switched sides tell someone where You prefer pie more than cake You have 4 or more siblings You have a pet… if you switched sides tell someone what pet you have and it’s name You prefer morning more than night You were named after someone…if you switched sides tell someone who You like to sing You have participated in a race (like a 5K or marathon) You speak another language…if you switched sides tell someone what languages you speak You prefer mountains more than beach You prefer books more than movies Play an instrument…if you switched sides tell someone what instrument you play You like to play sports or have played on any teams You prefer dark chocolate more than white Chocolate You have traveled out of the country…if you switched sides tell someone where You prefer washing dishes more than doing laundry There are many other things you could add to this list to fit your "getting to know you" group.

I wanted to share the details of a Christmas party I helped plan for our ward's Relief Society. In case anyone needed any Christmas party ideas (a few of you have asked), and as an excuse to share the recipe we used. :) It was themed 'Angels Among Us' and was about how small acts of service make a big impact on the lives of others and help us to become more like Christ. It was simple and lovely. We got the original idea here on Sugardoodle. Those of us in charge served dinner to the ladies. It was a nice change from the typical potluck-style. Our centerpieces were divine, I really wish I had gotten a picture of them! Oh, and dinner was delish! We served this Parmesan Baked Chicken along with baked potatoes, salad, rolls and cheesecake. Yummers! Parmesan Baked Chicken 2.5 lbs. chicken, cut into nice size portions 4 slices bread (the cheap stuff works best) 3/4 c parmesan cheese (not fresh) 1/8 c parsley flakes 1 t salt 1 t garlic salt 1/8 t pepper 1/2 c butter (or less) Mayonnaise Blend the bread in the blender, then mix with cheese, parsley flakes, and seasoning. Dip chicken breast in mayonnaise, then roll in crumb mixture until coated. Place in pan. Drizzle butter on top. Cover with foil and bake 1-1/2 hours. Uncover and bake 15-20 minutes more or until slightly crispy. Bake time may be a little less, depending on the pan and oven. After dinner, we showed this video: For a few weeks before the party, we had passed around papers during Sunday School asking people to share anonymous stories about how someone from the ward had done an act of service for them and how that impacted their life. Then we read the stories that had been shared anonymously. My very favorite part of the stories was that the acts of service were truly sooo simple! The littlest things like scooting over to make room for someone to sit by another person, being understanding when someone couldn't make it to something because their child was ill, not being in a rush to get home after church so they could visit and become better friends.... I don't remember everything, but honestly almost every story was about such simple acts of kindness! It really is the little things! Two teenage sisters in our ward sang a duet of O Holy Night. They really sounded like angels singing! And the 2nd verse went perfectly with our theme! Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His Gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother And in His Name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy Name! Everyone was given an angel favor with a quote: "When we speak of those who are instruments in the hand of God, we are reminded that not all angels are from the other side of the veil. Some of them we walk with and talk with—here, now, every day. Some of them reside in our own neighborhoods. Some of them gave birth to us, and in my case, one of them consented to marry me. Indeed heaven never seems closer than when we see the love of God manifested in the kindness and devotion of people so good and so pure that angelic is the only word that comes to mind.” ― Jeffrey R. Holland This party was just one more thing that has brought the Christmas spirit to this bursting heart of mine! Usually when I think of someone who is having a hard time, I wish there were something I could to help, but think there isn't so I do nothing. But that night truly did teach me to stop thinking and feeling that way. Now if anyone ever comes to mind, I try to do something -- anything. I hope I don't forget this little lesson, because as I look back and think of the things that have helped me the most, many of them were small and simple kindnesses by others. There is always something we can do. I'll end with this video because it's a song about angels, but mostly because Chloe loves it. She seriously goes bazurko when she hears it! Totally makes me giggle :)

A stake president who has many bishops with a high welfare demand recently asked me how I approached welfare when I was a bishop. I don't have the perfect answer but serving in a ward with high welfare needs definitely forced me to have a well-refined approach to welfare requests. I thought I'd share with you what I shared with him.

At the beginning of ward council most organization leaders are focused on the bishop. What’s he going to say? Any new direction? How long will this go? The meeting hinges on the bishop. This focus doesn’t mean it will be an awful meeting, but will it lead to a closer interaction with the Spirit? Elder […]

One of the most frequently misunderstood terms in the bible is the term “help meet” in the book of Genesis. In Genesis 2:18 it says, “And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” The common way in which the…
