Hondas are popular with scrambler builders — especially 'thumpers' like the XR and NX650 Dominator, and vintage CBs and CLs. Here's a selection of the best.

SCRAMBLERS ARE A HOT TOPIC. Build one, and you’re sure to be judged solely by how well equipped it is for hardcore off-piste use. But that’s not all that scramblers are about. Daniel Peter compares his latest build to his childhood BMX—and it’s pretty much how we feel about modern-day scramblers too. “When I was […]
There’s something about this slightly gawky 2008 Triumph T100 Scrambler custom that appeals to me. Can’t quite put my finger on it, but I like it. It’s from Hammarhead Industries, a now-defunct US company that had a mission to create “simple yet modern motorcycles”. The US$16,500 Jack Pine is a Triumph Scrambler that's been given a thorough reworking—which includes the removal of the oil cooler, a rear frame loop shortened by four inches, and a reworked seat unit. It’s running Keihin CR carbs and a K&N filter, which meant fabricating compact intake manifolds similar to the old T120. The exhaust

Desert sleds still have a place in modern motorcycling iconography. Originally an American phenomenon, today it’s the Triumph Scrambler from across the ditch that embodies the spirit most closely. And it doesn’t take much to give a modern Scrambler a touch of the desert sled vibe, as this 2012 Triumph from British Customs shows. Desert sleds been around since the late 40s, and were originally based on street bikes from Indian and Harley. Fitted with trials tires, the bikes were still as heavy as sin—even after a thorough diet. The British 650cc twins came a little later, and pretty much

These days, any mention of a 'scrambler' usually sparks a fervent debate about what exactly the name means. But here's something we can all agree on: vintage-style scramblers are seriously cool. We're talking about those machines that actually went off-piste; duking it out at the legendary International Six Days Trial, or blazing a trail across the Californian desert. Back then they were all about function—but today they're just as much about nostalgic appeal. Stephen Bentley of Dust Custom Motorcycles has captured the scrambler vibe perfectly with this latest build. And even though he's used a BMW—rather than a British or
‘FAT’, is the first word that came to mind when I first saw Shaun at Down & Outs new ride, a build which I received the odd updates on when it was being put together at the Down & Out workshop in Barnsley, which is just north of Sheffield UK. Like some of the other well established builders of Triumph […]
