A dealer I know found these in a box lot he won at auction. They appear to be business ledgers and accounts for a firm in London, England (??) but there is nothing to identify the business or the owner. Seems to be general store type goods. With these ledgers where workbooks dating from 1821-24 on business, mathematics, etc. and the name Donald Paterson is doodled on these quite a bit, so I presume they belonged to him. Does anyone out there have any ideas??

Hello cyber friends! I have got the answer for that BIG question, how do I use up my ever growing stash? Ok here it is, make a junk journal! Doing so, will provide you with hours of entertainment as you sort through your stash and wonder what on earth prompted you to buy some things and with other things, you'll be so tickled that you finally got to use that special item! Those bits and pieces of leftover paper collections are perfect in a junk journal. These journals are so easy to make if you use Sizzix's XL journal die designed by Eileen Hull. You just cut out two chip or mat board covers, add your favorite design paper inside and out and then assemble with elastic bands. The process is so easy, I am guessing that if you give it a try, you will be addicted as am I!! Though this is my 1st junk journal, it's my 4th journal using this die, in less than a month. Can you say addicted?! So the next question is, what is a junk journal? Well it's pretty much like its name, its a journal of junk. They are often made from old music sheets, paper bags, maps, note papers, junk mail, really anything goes! I chose to use scraps of scrapbook paper that I have accumulated over the years along with bits and pieces from my very old embellishment stash! You can then use the journal for whatever you want. I am using mine simply as a conversation piece. It's filled with quotes and pictures and just fun "stuff". I had so much fun searching for just the right "thing" in my stash of "stuff" that I haven't touched in years. Sometimes I was wondering, did I really buy that, what was I thinking?? But, seriously, what a great way to use up my stash! These journal dies have been selling like hot cakes and it's been hard to get your hands on one. The Funkie Junkie Boutique has one in stock as I am writing this. I made this book for me but I am also entering it in the current Frilly and Funkie challenge, Read Any Good Books Lately, which is to "create a vintage or shabby chic project that depicts a favorite book or use book pages on your project, alter a book or even make a journal or journal page! " I made a video to share my journal with you and hopefully inspire you to make your own junk journal. Here are a few of my favorite pages. I did age some paper to use in my journal. I simply took copy paper, dipped it in tea and then dried in the oven for a few minutes. That gave me gorgeous aged paper. The fun thing about junk journals, is that there are no rules. Just have fun, be creative, put your imagination to work! Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my journal! I really appreciate it.

I've done these six collages just since January 1. I am having so much fun with these. The other day I cleaned and reorganized my front studio space so I have more room on the table to work. I just want to be in that place, putting things together. This post marks several milestones ~ I'm celebrating my 9th Blogoversary here. I started blogging in January 2008. I know a few of you have been with me since then. My all-time blog hits went over 500,000 a few days ago. Half a million hits. Wow. And the hits just keep on coming. My deep gratitude to all who read and follow me. This is the 1822nd post on this blog, but when you consider that two of my three other former blogs had daily posts for at least a couple years, I figure I've probably posted aggregately close to 4000 times in nine years. A lot of words; but a lot more images. I'll leave you with this awesome poem I found this morning on Christi Carter's blog ~ "There isn't one right path for you or anyone else. And there isn't a set of timelines or milestones ... You're allowed to backtrack. You're allowed to figure out what inspires you at different stages of your life. You're allowed extra time when you need it. Life is meant to be a series of zigs and zags. It should look like a mess, but a beautiful mess. It shows that you have changed and grown. You've had your ups and downs. You went down one path, but decided to change course... perhaps on many occasions. That's how life should be." ~ Angel Chernoff ~

I've been here about two and a half months. It feels like much longer. But no, I'm still not "settled" or organized. Besides adjusting to the "cross-country-move/new job/roommate/roommate's cat" situation, I am also working on adjusting to glasses: Henry is not impressed. I've never worn glasses, besides a weak pair of reading glasses when working on metalsmithing or bookbinding. My left eye is weak, and has been for a while...astigmatism, which I can barely explain. It has been bugging me for a couple of years, (eye-strain, headaches, frowning.) I believe the right lens of my new glasses is crystal clear, and it's not a super strong prescription. Boring, Michelle. So anyway....glasses. Weird. It was quite chilly today, and it is most definately fall here in the mountains of North Carolina. Sweater weather. Socks and hat around the house. I had a piece at Asheville Bookworks' "Bookopolis" last weekend, and my piece was also juried into the "Capital Works" show by Eileen Wallace. There is an online catalog of the work juried into the Capital Works exhibition here. My photos are pretty weak. As a partial excuse, it was before I got my glasses... I really don't know how to take photos of books or objects. One night I experimented with a borrowed camera, borrowed tripod, in a pretty decent photo-taking room. Again, before I got the glasses. I don't love the dark background, but it is probably the best backdrop I have ever used... Anyway. I have been drawing a lot. Simplifying. Trying to think. Or maybe not think; just work. I don't quite know what I want to do right now, art-wise. And that's okay. 'Cause I'm working on it.
