If you ask someone what they think makes art so special, they are likely to tell you that it is the creative aspect and the sensual aspect of art that makes it so special. This is true and makes sense too but one of the things that makes art so wonderful to so many according to us, is the fact that it has no limits or limitations. We don’t know whether you agree with us or not, but we are planning to make a convincing case of this point in this article. In this article, we are going to be talking about art that is larger than life in the sense that instead of limiting itself to a canvas or a particular material it is using land or natural features to showcase the creativity of the artist. We are talking about land art installations in this article. It is only when you look at these stunning land art installations will you realize that these are immense works of art that seem to own the land on which they have been made without dominating them. This is probably due to the fact that the land is part of the art as much as the art is part of the land and one could not imagine one without the other once one has seen it.
Japan-based artist Ayumi Shibata (previously) designs intricate landscapes using layers upon layers of white paper. Some of her sculptures are miniature, whereas others are immersive installations, and all are brought to life with the play of light and shadow, which create “movement” throughout her pieces. The works feature architectural domes, cave-like forests, and swirling suns hovering over tree-filled cities. These picturesque places aren’t based on a particular location but what the artist “hopes and believes the future of the planet could look like”. More

Argentinian-Spanish artist Felipe Pantone (previously) boasts an incredible archive of sculptures and murals that are founded on the principles of color theory. His works range from large-scale glitches and bold pixelations to tabletop prisms that shift with human touch. His most recent project, “Subtractive Variability Compact,” falls in the latter category as it visualizes the full range of the CMY spectrum through stacked, spinning wheels. More
Erupting from floors, doorways, and furniture, artist Henrique Oliveira’s artworks (previously) are a remarkable comment on the relationship between the built environment and the power of nature. In installations that explore the relationship between reality and otherworldly spectacle, enormous wooden limbs and vine-like forms emerge from walls and ceilings that have been cracked, broken, and twisted around the emerging growth, unable to contain it. Oliveira uses various readymade and organic materials such as bricks, wood, PVC, tree branches, mud, and other found items. More

Oakland based artist Tracey Snelling, featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 35, creates detailed dioramas and installations of urban landscapes. Ranging from miniature to large scale pieces, her installations represent her impression of a space through the use of mixed media like sculpture, video, and photography. Hers is an imaginary world based on real places, sometimes populated by dolls and figurines, and lit dramatically by LCD screens and film stills to add a flicker of life. For her latest multimedia installation debuting on November 20th, Snelling wanted to capture the vulnerability and strength found in poverty-stricken slums around the world.
German sculptor Angela Glajcar created tunnels of light made from white paper for an exhibition in Munich’s Heitsch Gallery. The astonishing aspect of the world of art is that there is no such thing that should be considered astonishing by any standards but it still manages to make us feel that things are astonishing. That is why we are going to be talking about life like figurative sculptures that are astonishingly so real that we can literally make the expression of the sculpture you are looking at. In many instances, especially when it comes to classical art, sculptures lean more towards suggestive, symbolic and indicative rather than realistic. But in this article we are talking about figurative sculptures that are astonishingly lifelike. It not like these gleaming and glowing delicate glass sculptures but still mesmerizing nevertheless.
Spanish sculptor David Moreno (previously) continues to blur the lines between two and three dimensions with his architectural artworks. Created using hundreds of steel rods and lengths of piano wire, Moreno’s sculptures take the shape of buildings, and his more recent works have ventured indoors, highlighting interior details like doorways and staircases. In 2017, the artist also created a large, immersive installation in the United Arab Emirates titled “Connecting Doors.” Moreno shares his work on Instagram and Behance. More

Embedded within the eroded cement and marble pillars of artist Jamie North are a host of plants native to Australia. Kangaroo vines, Port Jackson figs, and kidney weeds wrap themselves around steel cables and grow from the crevices of the cracked stone forms, juxtaposing the industrial, human-made sculptures with organic elements. The lush greenery infuses the otherwise dilapidated structures with new life, which elicits a larger theme of regeneration. In a note to Colossal, North writes that he begins each vertical work with a geometric cast evoking the stately shapes of the tower and column. More

Peter Gentenaar, a paper artist based in the Netherlands, creates ethereal, large-scale sculptures of organic shapes that float in mid-air as they hang from the ceilings. Some look like aquatic plant life while others resemble the qualities of bright, delicate spring flowers. Gentenaar's craft evolved from his love for paper, a passion he acquired from the many years he spent working in a printmaking shop. His unusual, stunning work defies conventional thinking regarding paper's colloquial, everyday use. Read more after the jump.
