Hello everyone, Hope your week is going well. I had planned to do this post from down south but I had internet issues there. As you may know this is the boat house that my husband and son built a little over a year ago. I have shown bits and pieces but today I have more photos that I haven't shown before. There are still some little touches to be done but I can show them later. We used old windows and doors ,spindles and some old wainscoting as well as a couple of old barn beams. The posts on the porch were also recycled, I love how it reflects in the pond. Some of you might remember that I got the old door and the old iron bed at the 70 mile yard sale last September ~ both for $20, The little conservatory on the back faces south and we used old french doors in here.Although it is small I love it! If you would like to see more of it click here. A small porch across the front to sit and enjoy nature. It has already had a few changes as this was before the iron bed. Andrew's grandfather was a carpenter and this was his handmade ladder that Andrew treasures.I kind of doubt that either of them imagined it with linen and lace! The little nook is a cozy place to enjoy the view or read a book. It has an electric fireplace for ambiance. The loft is a favorite place for our grandchildren. This was the first year for this flower bed and it did well for a first season. We used soil from our own compost pile. I can't wait until we can sleep out here again.....it is such a peaceful retreat! The view from the side so you can see the tiny conservatory and the nook for reading etc. There are still little finishing touches to be done.....you know how I love to play house! Most people love to linger for a spell when they visit and some want to move right in... but alas I claim first dibs on it!!! I am sure you will see lots more photos of it this summer. I think Andrew and our son did a great job~ don't you? I am joining French Country Cottage for Feathered Nest Friday, Common Ground for Be Inspired and My Romantic Home for Show & Tell. Thank you for visiting, Carolyn

As time goes by . . . Back in Nov, of last year I noticed what looked like a very well built tiny home that was designed and built by a custom tiny home builder from Mountain View Arkansas. I have been looking at tiny homes for many years and I know that to build your own tiny home you can easily spend twenty thousand dollars for a 8 x 22 foot home on wheels. So I was thrilled to discover Scott was offering his tiny homes at a very reasonable price. http://tinyhouseblog.com/stick-built/the-slabtown-annemarie/ . I spoke to him on the phone a couple of times and really liked the fact he would customize the tiny home to my desires. I communicated with others who bought tiny or small homes from him and heard great things about his work and customer service. I decided to order the Annemarie unit from him. Once it is built I will have it towed from Arkansas to WA state. Even after transport to WA state it is a wonderful deal. I had hoped to be decorating my tiny home by now but there have been some delays, but hopefully It should be built and finished in about a month or close to it. As soon as it arrives I will paint it, shabby-chic it, decorate it, girl-ify it and fill it with vintage treasures . OH, my little chick shack - I can hardly wait. Scott, (my tiny home builder) - I am counting the days. In the meantime, I am going to fix up a chick shack of a different kind - The ultimate chicken coop. This little 6 x 8 foot, old play house has been re purposed and made into a chicken coop for my rare breed lavender Orpington chicks. I can't wait to move them from my bathroom into their new home. Take a look - A fresh coat of white paint will brighten it up. Yeah, I already hung the chandelier. I knew that would be a must have in the little fancy hen house. The hens will need a bit of bling bling in the coop. Why not? I found these wonderful vintage nesting boxes on Craig's list. They came from and old egg production barn that was over a hundred and fifty years old. I just love them. They are finally attached to the wall. They were just one inch shy of being a perfect fit. My honey had to carefully retrofit them, so that they would squeeze into the proper place in the coop. I have two old table legs that I purchased for $1.00 each that will fit nicely underneath the nesting boxes to make it appear as if the nesting box is a piece of standing furniture. I found this old rusty wrought iron piece at a garage sale for $1.00. The mirror was broken in it, but I think it will be a nice addition to the coop. It will frame out the door way where the chickens will eventually go in and out. I bought washable wallpaper for the coop. It is a chicken wire pattern with little pink roses, how appropiate for spoiled chickens. I purchased it at a closeout sale. I thought one roll would be enough for a 6 x 8 space. Not....(sigh). It was a discontinued pattern and I bought the last roll. Thank goodness for the Internet. After searching the world for a matching roll or paper, I found one more roll in the crevices of some old warehouse in the Midwest that someone was willing to ship to me. So, after a 2 week delay in decorating the coop, the hens were happy to know the wallpaper had arrived. I can't believe a roll of wallpaper has shrunk so much since the last time I wallpapered. Why is it, that everything keeps shrinking, except my jeans that is? A old milk can makes a great place to store the organic chicken feed. A vintage tractor seat makes a nice place for me to sit and hang out in the coop and watch my little chicks grow. . I filled the nesting boxes with organic hay. Pink roses and white painted scalloped trim adorn the roof of the nesting boxes. I added a bit of stenciling and bling bling to the inside of some of the nesting boxes. Only the top egg producing hens get to occupy these extra fancy little nesting condos. Just kidding, don't send me hate mail. Just in case my hens start to squabble over what space belongs to them, I put their names above their space. I named some of my hens after my favorite Aunts who have passed away as well as mother hen figures in my life. Here are some of the chicks that will be living in the coop. I can't wait to get them moved out of my bathroom. They sure create a lot of dust. I guess a vacuum & duster is in order for the upkeep of their coop. . The recipients of fresh organic eggs, once they arrive. Are they waiting for eggs or the chickens? The outside coop run needs to be build now. It will be a chick playpen of sorts. A place for them to be safe when I am not able to supervise their free-range activities. The coop is still under development - More chick shack (coop) pictures to come. Wait till you see what I've added to the coop for my lavender fuzz butts.

I'm an absolute sucker for a good bell jar or glass dome display. There is just such a plethora of options for how to fill them, how to use them to the best advantage in your decor. Display a treasured faerie treasure...a sculpture perhaps? The two below are stunning examples by the incredible artist Nenufar Blanco. Create a whole miniature world inside a dome. These two examples are from Life in a Bell Jar. An endless amount of possibilities... The containers themselves can sometimes be the art: After all...there's no precedent for bell jars in fairy tales. No, none at all....
Artful Asparagus Photo by Jim Westphalen I decided to repost this favorite project I created for Country Gardens. It's an idea that never grows old.. SO EASY to do! I often say, "the arrangement is equally about the container!" Asparagus is the vegetable of the season right now and it looks beautiful combined with flowers from your spring garden. Wrap a runner band around a coffee size can. Cut asparagus stalk to 1" to 2" taller than the can. Place the stalks side by side standing straight up inside the rubber band. Tie with a ribbon to hide the rubber band. Add flowers. Voilà ... that was easy,... healthy fresh asparagus will last a week or longer (or when the flowers pass then you can cook the asparagus up)
Thank you once again for all the lovely comments on the shabby cottage downstairs, you really make my day! Here we have the outside of the house. Fabulous orange made by Susanna. Jug of tulips made by me. Weather vane made by me!! Tub of flowers made by Hanna. Orchid a gift from Kim. Topiary trees in pots which I 'shabbied' were a gift from Sophia. Shutter made by Sylvia. Flowers and rusty things made by me. Tin pitcher made by Sylvia. Perfectly shabby package made by Eva. I made the coal box on the side of the house to hide the plug where all the electrical wires meet. Through the kitchen window. Through the dining window. Thanks for taking the time to look around, I hope you've all enjoyed the tour! And once again a huge thank you to all the friends who have sent me so many wonderful things to make this little house a home. I'm sure we'll be back visiting the shabby cottage from time to time, no home (big or small!) is really ever finished! Mercedes

Pixie Nook Cottage Photos used with the permission of Unique Home Stays www.pixienook.uniquehomestays.com, contact number + 44 (0) 1637 881942 Recently I received an email from Claire at Unique Home Stays in the UK ("Unique Home Stays offers luxury private house accommodation in more than 140 homes scattered over 14 different countries.") Claire had found my blog and had some nice things to say about it. Then she asked if I'd like to blog about one of Unique Home Stay's cottages "Pixie Nook". Once I looked at the stunning photos of Pixie Nook I sent a "definitely" reply to Claire and here we are. It's my pleasure to share this pretty one bedroom cottage with you. Step from the picturesque Cornish countryside through the powder green door of this 300 year-old traditional stone cottage and get ready for a surprise. There's nothing conventional about this cottage decor. Dressed in luscious contemporary florals in jewel tones, the rooms suggest a cottage garden. Lots of attention to detail here. The colored glass at the windows echo the hues in the drapery fabric and the area rug. Pixie Nook is Grade II listed, which in the UK means it is of "special interest". The present owners purchased the cottage in 2011 and renovated and decorated the property themselves, with the help of the Interior Styler at Unique Home Stays Jess Clarke. We classic cottage lovers can appreciate the care the owners took to maintain the architectural integrity throughout their home. I love the white granite walls, deep window wells, beamed ceilings and painted wood floors. The bright colors of the accessories contrasted against the white walls and cupboard create a cheery dining area. I knew you'd want a closer look at that gorgeous teapot. There's no lack of modern amenities in this kitchen, yet the blue cabinets with the scalloped edging and the wood countertops satisfy the longing for an old-fashioned cottage. Ahhh, a white farm sink. It speaks "charm" to me. Not to mention that marvelous door. I'm really intrigued by this headboard. It looks like velvet. I imagine breakfast in bed followed by lollygagging the morning away with a good book or magazine. (I still like to thumb through home decorating magazines, don't you?) There's a little mid-century, a touch of vintage and a spot of modern throughout the cottage. It's not easy to pull off an eclectic look, but these folks did a smashing job. Did you notice the cup and saucer lamp bases? Just a hint of whimsy. Very smart. Are you as crazy about those hook and eye locks on the window as I am? So quaint. And who could resist a walk in the countryside after seeing this view? After a soak in the tub I'll meet you on the patio for a late lunch. It appears to be early spring when these photos were taken. I'm picturing this scene with morning glories climbing up the trellises and a scramble of perennials under the windows. A window box or two wouldn't hurt, either. Very inviting. Every cottage needs a stone wall somewhere. Afternoon tea in the garden, anyone? That's a cedar hot tub, upper left in the photo. The lighting is enchanting. Very effective for evening enjoyment. I hope you enjoyed the tour of Pixie Nook. And to Claire I'd like to say a big "thank you" for allowing me to share this delightful place with all my cottage friends. If you're interested in booking a stay at Pixie Nook, Claire invites you to travel on over to www.uniquehomestays.com. Blessings,
