About The Artwork 2021, oil on cardboard, 69x29 cm. Every time I return to painting I usually spent a while just sketching, as a way to remember skills and to regain the trust and the joy. In fact I've always loved from life sketching and the apparent lack of significance entailing it. Just for the fun. Aaron Alamo uses the typical visual elements of the Baroque Vanitas, adding some contemporary objects, but his message transcends a mere aesthetic, as he plays with our idea of photography and art as eternal elements. His work is a photograph of a photograph taken 10 years ago and treated with humidity and fungus for its prompt decomposition. Aaron's work makes us question the temporality in art and the concept of eternal. Aaron Alamo: “‘Vanitas: Not-so-still Life’, is a project that shows the destruction of a photograph through time. Inspired by traditional vanitas paintings, with elements that are carefully chosen to give them a modern twist: a skull with orthodontist braces, a bucket of KFC, a plastic cup, etc., The original photographs were created in 2008. They were printed on cotton paper and ‘treated’ with humidity and a culture of fungus in a dark place. The process of decay was photographed every year for the next 10 years creating a series of images of decay and transformation. This series demonstrates how nothing is eternal -not even a photograph.” Available sizes: M Unframed 40cm x 60cm L Unframed 60cm x 100cm Limited edition of 10 prints per size. 'Red Wine and Cheese' is a small Impressionist oil on canvas still-life painting created by American artist Laura L. Shubert in 2019. Featuring a palette made of beige, red, brown, blue grey and white tones, the painting draws us in with its mouth-watering depiction of a glass of red wine, standing tall next to a display of cheese. Stacked on another piece of cheese, the blue cheese (possibly a "fourme") is placed vertically, in order to provide a perfect visual response to the wine that will reveal all its character. Unframed, this small oil on canvas still-life is signed lower right. With a nod to Shakespeare, we can readily count the ways we love Laura Shubert’s light-and energy-filled paintings. We admire her deft way of capturing luminosity as it plays off her subjects. We smile at her choice of subject: waiters, caught mid-torso, bearing bottles of wine; the sun-dappled façade of a Provencal house; a leggy pre-adolescent cartwheeling on the beach, bathed in sunshine. Her paintings are highly evolved, yet convey the ordinary elements of everyday life. We are in awe of her painterly technique, which is rich, loose and spontaneous. Shubert paints in a strong and defined bravura style that catches the movement and the moment. Her use of paint has been compared to the pleasure of a dessert chef spreading frosting on a cake and, indeed, her paintings “convey a sense of well-being, of the good life and of deep and quiet pleasures.” (James R. Nelson, Birmingham News).
