Good morning, dear readers! It has been a while since I posted a FREE pattern. So... here is the Rosalie pendant from my Romance of the Piney Woods collection: Rosalie is tatted with Valdani Luxury Pearl Silks in S204 & S78. She is accented with six 4mm light rose Swarovski bicones, numerous matte burgundy Czech seed beads and a 6.5mm freshwater pearl. This is a very easy pendant to tat. It begins with a foundation of 6 interlocking chain rings: Beginning with a size 8 tatting needle, Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk S204, 6 Swarovskis and 12 seed beads (which are strung in the following order: seed bead, Swarovski, seed bead) tat 6 interlocking chain rings all with the same count of: 11 very small - 3 - (with seed bead, Swarovski, seed bead) 3 very small - 11 CL When you have tatted all 6 ICRs they should resemble the image above. Tie a knot and leave a moderate length of both threads as you will be using these thread ends to anchor the pearl later. For step two, still using Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk in S204, string 18 seed beads onto silk. Tat as follows: Run needle through very small picot to the RIGHT of bead cluster of ICR round. CH 3 - (with 3 seed beads) 3 CL + to next very small picot and CH 5 very small - 3 small - medium - small - 3 very small - 5 CL + to next very small picot. Continue around motif, tie & cut. SPECIAL NOTE: before cutting the silk, you need to put a small dot of jeweler's glue or clear finger nail polish on the knot to prevent the silk from unraveling. Allow to dry, then snip. After I cut the thread, I took the time to block & shape the motif. This is a step that really helps keep your work neat and tidy. Using Valdani Luxury Pearl Silk in S78, string 18 seed beads onto silk. Tat the following to complete the pendant: Run needle through very small picot to the RIGHT of the previously tatted picot set, pick up one seed bead with needle then CH 5 - with 3 seed beads 5 CL (this will snug the seed bead to the base of the CH. You may need to use your fingers to position it to your liking) + to next very small picot pick up one seed bead with needle CH 25 CL Continue around motif, tie & cut (remembering to secure knot with glue BEFORE cutting). Now- to secure the center: using needle, thread one end and pull it to back of center ICR founation. Unthread needle, then rethread it with the other thread end. String on pearl and one seed bead. Run needle back through pearl and center of ICR foundation. Snug up pearl and seed bead to center of ICR foundation. Flip pendant over, tie ends, secure with dab of glue, cut. Add jump ring or pendant bail & voila~ Rosalie! Well, dear readers, I have another goody for you. A new giveaway event will be announced tomorrow and it will feature Rosalie- sort of. I am going to expand her a bit and put my special Piney Woods touch on her. So how do you like this idea? I'm still contemplating the particulars- be sure to check out tomorrow's post for all the details! Until then, enjoy the pattern & Happy Tatting!

tatted around a ring - one of Jon Yusoff's patterns, but in size 80 thread, and with picots instead of josephine rings. (Can only find small rings to tat around...but luckily I prefer thinner threads anyway.)
And here it is. I finished the tatting tonight. I made the cords on my Lucet, and they are threaded in the beading. just for looks I stuffed the inside with dark purple velvet. It hadn't originally been what I was thinking of using for the lining, but might end up being the perfect thing. Other then the lining, the only thing not finished is the ends of the cords. I don't yet know how to finish them off. possibly tassels?.... or if you have any ideas that would be great if you leave me a comment. So without further ado..... added later The bag is 7.75" wide and 9" tall. I used size 10 Lizbeth in white, in the front I also included pink and green Krenick blending filaments for color. The back, side joining and beading rows are all plain white. I used about 1 and 3/4 balls of thread, including the lucet cords for the drawstring. I think I will put tassels on the ends of the drawstrings. most of this weekend will be spent at the sewing machine finishing the shoulder bag for farmguy to take on the plane. and at the computer, I have about 9 typed pages to accomplish this weekend. If the Omnipage 15 software works like it should, about 7 of those will be scanned as text in to a text doc. but if not, then I will be typing my fingers off. weather is supposed to be above freezing all weekend. that will be soooo nice. Have a great weekend all of you.

America's pilgrims set aside a day at the end of harvest to thank God for all they have, even in there struggles. We still celebrate this day calling it Thanksgiving Day! words in picture " When we give thanks in all things, we see hardships and adversities in the context of the purpose of life." by Dallin H Oaks. After making the fall leaves from two different patterns, still deciding how to arrange them. All are size 40 lizbeth colors. This little beauty is from "le blogde frivole" fun a quick after you get hang of it. The larger maple leaf is from a book called "Celtic Tatting" leaves and flowers. She does a wonderful job of explaining the twist and encourages you to experiment with making your own style for fun. After the first two I made one in about and hour and a half. This one is a play one a little to bumpy hers looks better. Idea of the size here. This is another way to arrange, but I really plan on stitching the words in, I think :) I was also thinking of tatting more leaves and connecting them for a doily or bowl shape.

Shuttle Sisters! Here we are together, yes I'm on the left and big sister is on the right, she always looks so scared of cameras doesn't she? This weekend I went to see Jane and took the shuttles that my husband had made for a "tat test". Unfortunately there are a few design problems, so its not exactly back to the "drawing board", but a little disappointing after all his hard work. Still he is undeterred and is now going to make some modifications. I can report that there is going to be a wonderful gadget to go with the shuttles, that will be unique, and with more suggestions regarding its design from Jane it looks like being a very useful tool. Now you are all wondering what I'm talking about. I'm not sure when I can show you some more pictures of the shuttles, its a case of how often I can shut my husband in the garage! Hallowversary Prize! I received an e.mail from my son yesterday, informing me that the parcel from Aileen "Wicked Tats" had arrived and he has kindly taken a photograph of the contents. These were from her Halloween Giveaway, the first time I had ever won a prize from a blog giveaway and it will probably be the last! Thank you Aileen I look forward to seeing them soon. My son lives in Singapore and so will forward the goodies with our Christmas Presents. Actually he is going to visit Hong Kong in a few days time so I might send him to do some shopping there. He spent the first two years of his life in Hong Kong so although he will not remember the place he has promised to take photographs so we can see how it has changed over the years. Today is St. Andrews Day - he is the patron saint of fishermen and there is an obvious connection to tatting, because the German word for tatting is Schiffchenarbeit which translated is "the work of the little boat". St. Andrew is of course the Patron Saint of Scotland so I wish them a Happy St. Andrews Day.
Chester was an engineer. You might be wondering, how did an engineer become interested in tatting?

I think this can be a confusing concept for beginner tatters. So I tried to simplify the concepts for you visually. This example is tatted in the traditional way. Reverse Work "RW" means to flip from top to bottom. Turn Work "TW" means to turn like a page in a book...from right to left. Notice how the chain turned directions. I use a lot of TW's in my patterns. Here's a bonus picture showing a "floating ring". If Orange is Shuttle #1 and green is shuttle #2 (in lieu of ball thread), you can use shuttle #2 to throw off rings.

Most tatters who've been online for a while are familiar with Susan Fuller's "Heart's Desire". The swirling chains are so fascinating to follow, and such a great way to show off a variegated thread. Here it is, as tatted by Tatskool in her "Berry Burst Dessert" HDT: She very sensibly uses this pattern to test nearly all of her new threads, because you can really see the way the colors flow into each other. When I decided to tat it in Krystledawn's "Sea Glass" thread, I was going to make it exactly like the pattern, as above. But when I pulled the pattern out and looked at the picture, I thought, "That is way too many picots for this thread." It's just not a colorway that works well with frilliness; it calls for a very smooth design. So I decided to see how the pattern would look with no decorative picots at all. You can see the bare bones of the design here. It's a completely different look. Honestly, I prefer it with the picots in most colorways, but in this one I think the picots would detract from the thread. It was actually harder to tat this way, too, because of the way the pattern is written. Repeated groups of stitches within a ring or chain are given in parentheses and the number of repetitions given. When you want to see how many stitches total are in the ring, it's easier to count them on the picture than to try to add them up from the written directions. Even so, I kept making mistakes and having to re-open rings. I don't think it shows, though. I made this heart for Kay Foster of Handy Hands, Barbara's sister-in-law. I think that most tatters in North America have probably talked to Kay at some point when calling Handy Hands. Many people have heard on the various tatting lists that Kay was in a serious car accident in Texas and is still in the hospital. She is doing somewhat better now and hopes to be moved to a hospital nearer home. Karey Solomon has made a nice shawl for her and is asking tatters to make hearts sew onto it. E-mail Karey if you'd like to contribute a heart.
