Hello fine folks of the world about! We are getting closer to the winter solstice here and lots of stores have started the classic Christmas stock up. While we don't all celebrate Yule, Christmas or the Solstice the same, I think some classic ideas and decorations apply regardless of your celebrations. I have made a few things recently and thought I should post some ideas for inspiraton and a few techniques for you to try. I know where ever folks reside in the world one of the classic gifts would be some form of gift basket. My daughters Seasonal basket for her white witch house quickly done with cheap supplies!! This basket was done very simply with some of the same techniques we've gone over in the last few years ....of course scraps, extras and cheap bits. I like to use nail polish bottles for shape as it is easier to remove the glue and string off of the glass when dry. Wrap a bit of tissue around the glass. Slather with glue and wrap the string around the surface. Extra trim for the top can be triple wrapped string. Let this dry and you can remove the basket shape. trim the paper, paint, add a bit of wood or paper to the bottom, or drape some cloth as a decoration and base. The pine boughs can be done very simply as well if you don't have Lycopodium, using pipe cleaners. Just mix a glob of glue, dark green paint or green and back on a piece of plastic. Your going to run the pipe cleaner through that until saturated and the fluff sticks together to look more like needles. The result can be pretty promising using cheap supplies: Jars can be done with beads and jump rings for lids Simple bags and boxes with a snippet of labels or some printies you can find anywhere:

". . . thoroughness and most impressive scholarship . . . much entertaining detail and . . . pleasant humour." &; The Times Literary Supplement (London) Underwear &; practical garments with a utilitarian function or body coverings that serve an erotic purpose? As this fascinating and intelligently written study shows, the role played by underclothing over the last several centuries has been a varied one. In a well-documented, profusely illustrated volume combining impressive scholarship with an entertaining, often humorous style, two distinguished clothing historians consider undergarments worn by the English over the past 600 years. Beginning with the Middle Ages, the authors cover centuries of clothing history, including the Tudor period, the Restoration, the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and the twentieth century up to the eve of World War II. Drawing on extensive, research, the Cunningtons illuminate the role and function of underwear: it protected the wearer against the elements, supported costume shapes, served as an erotic stimulus, symbolized class distinctions, and fulfilled other social, sanitary, and economic functions. Enhancing the detailed, comprehensive text are more than 100 period illustrations and photographs depicting a laced-up bodice of the twelfth century, embroidered linen drawers of the sixteenth century, a hooped petticoat support in bentwood (c. 1750), footed long drawers (1795), nineteenth-century bustles, early nineteenth-century corsets for men, "Frillies for the Tiny Lady" (1939), and much more. A bibliography, appendix, and index complete a valuable reference work that will appeal to costume historians, sociologists, and other readers.

I rediscovered Elizabeth Berube's beautiful work for DC back in 2005 when I was going through my collection for material to post on my old 'Romance Comic Reading Room'. Over the last couple of years I've noticed Jacque Nodell write a few posts on Sequential Crush featuring Elizabeth Berube and her work, so for my post today I just wanted to bring all of that together for those who might be interested in this wonderful artwork and the person behind it. When I look at Elizabeth Berube's work I see a kind of Alphonse Mucha, Art Nouveau influence that fits with the time Ms Berube was working on this material, as that style was enjoying a revival of popularity in the late 60s/early 70s scene. Noteworthy is the inclusion of minority characters in some of these pieces. So here's those pages I scanned back in 2005 from some DC romance books, image-edited to hopefully get them looking at their best, plus links to all of Jacque's posts, including her interview with the lovely lady herself: First here's the existing Sequential Crush posts that feature Elizabeth Berube: Artist Spotlight: Elizabeth Berube Sequential Elizabeth Story Fashion Files: Beauty on a Budget – Woollies Special Announcement: Appearance by ElizabethBerube Winter Forecast Horoscope Fashion Files: Legs by Liz Berube Interview with Elizabeth Berube Now here's some samples of the different kinds of features Elizabeth drew for DC romance comics, beginning with a contents page from Falling in Love 142: Next here's a selection of horoscope pages, starting with the Fashion Horoscope from Girls' Love Stories 147: Pisces from Young Love 79: Cancer from Young Love 121: Leo from Young Love 121 And some horoscope double page spreads, first from Young Love 121: and from Young Love 123: Beauty on a Budget was a fairly regular feature in late 60s/early 70s DC romance books. First example from Girls' Love Stories 151: Next from Girls' Love Stories 175: And Girls' Romances 152: Plus Young Love 119: Not to mention Young Love 121: Finally some examples of less frequent or one-off features drawn by Elizabeth Berube. From Young Love 121, a request to readers to send in their fashion designs: A 'how to' page giving ideas for making decorations, in Young Love 120: And a similarly themed 'Hip Hints' page from Girls' Romances 151: And last of all (for this post), a charming 'Dating IQ' questionnaire from Girls' Love Stories 158: That's all for now, but revisiting these pages has inspired me to search for more, so don't be surprised to find more of the beautiful Elizabeth Berube's beautiful work on Out of This World. Next up - stay tuned for more cute girlie stuff - some more comic book paper dolls!

Hope you guys are in the mood for some mind-bending images? What's new, I hear you say. Well, I guess you have a point - you're on yellowtrace after all. Hooray! I've been meaning to post about camera obscura technique for ages now. Sometimes I can't keep up with myself, let alone everything else. So much amazing content, so little time. Anyway, camera obscura (in Latin - 'camera' = vaulted chamber or room; 'obscura' = dark) is an optical device that projects an image of surrounds on a screen. This is, in fact, one of the inventions which lead to photography. Camera obscura device typically consists of a box with a whole in one side. However, with these images I am showing you today, the 'box' is in fact an entire room. ..
