Hello Everyone! It is so nice to have time to put some finishing touches on a couple of units that we have coming up! Another historical figure we will study after Eleanor Roosevelt is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As a nation we celebrate his life daily! Thank you Dr. King! Officially we celebrate on the third Monday of January. I have posted about our activities before, but I went through and cleaned up, and added to my unit. Here are some pics from the updated unit! If you would like the 30 page free printable unit CLICK HERE!! :) My second offering for today is a unit our curriculum team worked on this summer. We had fun integrating reading and social studies and are finding it a natural way to teach and get everything in. This next unit is about other important historical figures. It includes posters about Alexander Graham Bell, Ben Franklin, Thomas Edison, Garrett Morgan, and Richard Allen along with reading strategy practice activities. It also includes an invention home project packet for kids. The unit ended up to be over 50 pages! I am excited to include this unit in our curriculum in a few weeks!! Here are a few pics from the unit! For your free 52 page Inventors Unit CLICK HERE!! :) So glad I had time to share these endeavors! Hope you can use at least parts of either one! It is my joy to be able to share and help your journey in the classroom or homefront become a little less stressful. As always, please let me know if this is something you can use, if there are any typos or problems, and if you would like to see something else in particular on this little blog. I hear from teachers and parents from all over the world, and I am so grateful for all of you!! Joyfully! Nancy

Hello Everyone! We are having a great week! I actually got in some guided reading groups today!! Yippee!! I love it when all the training and expectations for incorporating D5 actually settles in and works like a well oiled machine! Sometimes I just look up from what we're doing and just smile because most of the kids are doing it!! Really doing it!! I am so excited for tomorrow! Way to go, guys!!! The week after next we will begin our fairy tale unit (integrating our reading and social studies) and I wanted to share what we've been working on. This little unit is more than just reading (retelling, fiction/nonfiction/ poetry, inferring, reader's theater) and social studies. I've included some word work, writing, hands on visuals, and some math as well. Here are a few pics: Wave your wand here for your free 90 page unit! If you can think of anything else you want added to this, or if you see something that needs fixing, just leave me a little note!! I hope you and your kids have as much fun working on this as I did putting it together!! Thanks for stopping by!! Til next time!! Have a great rest of the week!! Joyfully! Nancy

I love, love, love to make handmade Christmas tree ornaments. I've been making them every year for as long as I can remember. My favorite time of the year to make them, prior to homesteading, was during the summer months. I'd take my supplies outside and watch the kids play in their small pool. Now that I garden in the summer, I have to adjust my time. These are just a few of my handmade Christmas ornaments, but wanted to share a few. Each one brings back memories of when and where we lived when I made them. Made from a tiny basket that I bought at a dollar store, filled with mini-balls of yarn made from embroidery threads, and the "knitting needles" are toothpicks and beads. Update: You can find directions on how to make this ornament at: How to Make a Knitting Basket Christmas Tree Ornament Almost every ornament I have made, has been made for gift giving to my family every Christmas. This one, however, was the only one I made. He is made from a wooden clothespin, paint, felt and small pom poms. His arms are chenille stems, or what we call "pipe cleaners." Made from craft foam and texture paints. I made several with red and green glitter to look like sugar cookies also. Simply made with felt, thread, and buttons. Remember when grocery stores still bagged groceries in paper bags? This is made from a paper grocery bag, rick rack, buttons, ribbon and stuffed with pillow stuffing. Made by tracing 3 heart cookie cutters in different sizes, cutting them with pinking shears, and the top dots are made with textured paint. Made from a recycled Capri Sun drink pouch. Only one exists. Made from a plastic lid, threads of beads, and crocheted around the edges. Only one exists. This was one of my favorites. I made a bunch of these for gift giving one year. They are made from two wooden popsicle sticks, and the ski's are painted toothpicks, snaps for the bottoms of the skis, and metallic thread for the ski handles. One year I made a bunch of these in different sizes. I purchased clearanced blue ornaments, and the head are styrofoam with glued beads. I made many of them to also look like policemen. Some had police hats, and had belts, guns etc. Those went to my brother for his tree and for the tree at the police station. Candy Apple Ornament. These were fun to make also. A simple plastic apple from a dollar store, dipped in glue, and then in bird seed, and glued into a silver candy paper. The stick is a cut piece from a wooden skewer and pressed down into the plastic apple. Wine Cork Horse. These recycled wine corks were cut with a small hand saw, and glued together. Made with recycled denim, buttons and a small amount of ribbon. They were filled with pillow stuffing. These were made from a paper toilet paper roll, cut and then glued. This was another of my favorites. The drum is made from a toilet paper roll, covered with felt and ribbon. The top is white craft foam, and the sticks are toothpicks and very tiny black pom poms. This was made with twigs and twine. Chocolate Christmas Candy. It's made from a painted ping pong ball, with a hole drilled in the top for the hanger, and the white frosting is made from crayola's model magic clay. It's topped with leaves (sequins). Hello Everyone, I wanted to share a couple of things we did last week to finish up our Grinch Week and a fun subtraction Reindeer Game we played this morning. On Friday, the day started with Fidget With It Friday and Green Play Doh! We practiced spelling our sight words! We got to enjoy that wonderful Dr. Seuss book again by making Grinch Cookies with our third grade book buddies! I drew a sample on the board and the kids did great!! Colored frosting, mini marshmallows, black licorice strings, and yellow Sixlettes. Our Grinch Cookies turned out great!! We made our Grinch Grime. This year I got Green Glitter Glue to use instead of white school glue! It turned out so cool!! Kids loved it!! We had such a fun day. At the end I gave the kids some Candy Canes the Grinch had left behind. You should have heard them when they read what he had done to the red and white ones!! :) EWWWW! Our Amazingly Dedicated, Sweet, and Fun Team!!! Today, Monday, we began our week of Reindeer Games. We are going to learn all about reindeer (caribou) and include them in all of our other curriculum areas. This morning I put together a fun little Reindeer Race. We divided into two groups and sat on either side of the large work mat. Each team had to roll a die and count down from 20 that many spaces. We put "lights" on each number as we counted down. The team that got to the finish line first won. Great subtraction practice! The kids each had a recording page of their own. Tomorrow we'll try it with addition! The cute reindeer plastic tablecloth is from...you guessed it! The Dollar Store! :) Click here for your copy! There's one for addition too! And here for my Reindeer Games unit! :) A great start to what will be a great week! Have a good one!! Joyfully! Nancy

The Polar Express has been my favorite Christmas book since I was a little girl. There was even a Christmas that I put "a bell from Santa's sleigh" at the top of my wish list. I also asked for a Polaroid picture of the North Pole, or a ride on the Polar Express to take my own Polaroid (my poor parents).

On Thursday, my students came in to this sight... That's right. I finally caved. I let Santa send an Elf to our classroom. Meet Mr. Sparkles. On his way to our classroom, he saw these doughnuts that reminded him of snowballs from the North Pole. He decided to bring the kids some - and he had a couple of letters for us. The first was a letter from Santa, introducing the Elf. The second was a letter addressed to Mrs. Madden. It said that Santa knew our class used the Whole Brain Teaching scoreboard and it gave the kids a little challenge. Our Elf will bring a present to our class (yep, he leaves it right under our class Christmas tree) each day for the 12 days of Christmas before winter break. At the end of each day, we get to open the present. If the students have won on the scoreboard, they get to keep the present. If not, they get to see what it was, but they are not able to keep it. :( The "gifts" are usually fun rewards for the students, but they are ALWAYS a way to spread kindness to others. I love how our Elf is helping us spread Random Acts of Christmas Kindness during these last days of school before the break! The Elf just puts one of the little "12 days of Elfcapades" notes into the gift bag each day... As you can see from these examples, the "gift" (note) is a little fun reward for the kiddos each day but also a way for them to spread kindness somehow. Our Elf just prepared 12 mini-gift bags numbered with the day and placed the note that corresponded to that day inside of the bag. Easy peasy little present! If you'd like to read more about this, or use this idea in your classroom, I've compiled it all into a little printable pack. While, it's not editable, I hope that you can use (at least) parts of it, or that it will help spark a way that you can use it with your class. {Download HERE} Also, don't forget about our 12 days of Christmas Freebies at our TpT shop! Day 8 has just been uploaded... I'm linking this post up with the follow FAB linky parties...
