"I Ran (So Far Away)", also released as "I Ran", is a song by English new wave band A Flock of Seagulls. It was released in 1982 as their third single and it was the second single from their self-titled debut album. It was the band's most successful single, topping the chart in Australia, and reaching numbers seven and nine in New Zealand and the United States respectively. Lead vocalist Mike Score says that there were two main sources of inspiration for "I Ran (So Far Away)". The members of A Flock of Seagulls would regularly visit Eric's Club in Liverpool, where one of the bands had a song called "I Ran". Score noted that because A Flock of Seagulls would rehearse right after returning from Eric's, the song title and chorus may have gotten stuck in his head. Another idea came from a poster at a Zoo Records office. The band had gone there with the intent of securing a recording contract, and they wanted to use the poster, which featured a man and a woman running away from a flying saucer, as the cover for their first album, A Flock of Seagulls (1982). This depiction also helped spark the song's unusual space-like lyrics. "I Ran (So Far Away)" was recorded at Battery Studios is London with producer Mike Howlett. It is a new wave and synth-pop song, with a run time of five minutes and seven seconds. According to the sheet music, the song moves at a quick tempo of 145 beats per minute. With a chord progression of A-G-A-G in the verses and F-G-A in the choruses, the song is written in the key of A minor. During the song's introduction and musical interludes, short guitar riffs are played, which give the sense of an echo. Guitarist Paul Reynolds had joined the band after the music was already written, so the short guitar riffs were added for Reynolds to play. Lyrically, "I Ran (So Far Away)" is about a man who sees an attractive woman and attempts to run away from his feelings. Before this happens, the man sees an aurora in the sky, and he and the woman are abducted by aliens. Three different versions of the song exist: The long version (5:07) features an introduction with swirling synthesizer noises imitating seagulls which then segues into a lengthy instrumental passage by the band before leading into the song. It concludes with a guitar solo and comes to a full ending. This version was featured on some pressings of A Flock of Seagulls and is featured on all CD versions of the album. The video version (3:58) omits most of the introductory section and begins with a cymbal crash but retains the full ending of the long version. This version was featured on some pressings of A Flock of Seagulls. The radio edit (3:43) begins with a cymbal crash and loops the song's final chorus, fading out at the end. The single was promoted by a distinctive music video directed by Tony van den Ende in which the band members performed in a room covered in aluminium foil and mirrors. The cameras used to film the video are clearly visible in many of the background reflections, their stands also covered in foil. The video is an homage to Brian Eno and Robert Fripp's (No Pussyfooting) album cover, which was also portrayed by The Strokes for their single, "The End Has No End" two decades later. The video received heavy rotation on MTV in the summer of 1982, and helped the single to become a hit. The band toured the United States extensively to promote the single, supporting Squeeze on their 1982 tour. As well as reaching number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, "I Ran" peaked at number 3 on the Top Tracks chart and number 8 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. Subsequently, the album reached number 10 on the Billboard 200. Despite success in Australia, New Zealand and the US, the single did not enjoy similar success in the band's home country (United Kingdom), failing to make the top 40. In an interview on the VH1 special 100 Greatest Songs of the '80s, Mike Score said that he resents the song, but plays it live because people enjoy it. "I Ran" was listed at #55 on the countdown. In VH1's 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 80s, the song was listed at #2, with Mike Score's interview played again. Although considered a 1980s new wave classic, the song experienced somewhat of a revival in 2002 as the signature theme for the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, being played during the game's television commercials and during gameplay as one of the songs in the playlist for radio station Wave 103. It appeared as a karaoke song in the 2012 game Sleeping Dogs. The master recording is available as a playable song in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s as well as the rebooted version of Karaoke Revolution, the song is also available in the game Rock Band 3 as a DLC. The song was featured in a 3-minute "minisode" of American animated Cartoon Network series, Regular Show named, "Fun Run".

(for part 1, click here) Los Angeles - Evangelists and Movie Stars, Oh My! The Johnsons have seen quite a lot on their road trip so far; Zion, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon, Pike's Peak, Cave of the Winds...but they still have a long way to go! From Zion National Park, Alden, Velma, Joan and Marilyn drove their LaSalle 427 miles, taking Hwy 91 through Utah, Vegas and part of California. At San Bernadino, they turned onto good 'ol Route 66 for a short jaunt that took them to Los Angeles. By the number of scrapbook pages dedicated to the area, it appears they did quite a lot there, so I'm breaking up their LA area visit into three parts (a,b,c). It looks like they stayed at the Fletcher Auto Court, 204 Fletcher Drive, Los Angeles. I Googled the auto court, and found scant mention of it, so I'm quite sure it no longer exists. I did find this interesting tidbit, however, dated April 28th, 1942: Don't know for sure if it's the Fletcher of Fletcher Auto Court, but it sounds like it could be. It's interesting how they skirt around the whole 'affair' aspect of the situation. The Merry-Go Round Cafe no longer exists. It was a unique concept for a restaurant, with conveyor belts moving past customers who would grab their food off of them. One conveyor belt took away their dirty dishes. The land it was on eventually became Angel's Knoll Park, which was closed recently. I found an image online of the Merry-Go Round Cafe's menu from 1937: The postcard at the top of this page is of the Glendale Hyperion Viaduct. On that same scrapbook page we have two more postcards. The one on the left is titled Looking West on 7th St, Near Hill, Los Angeles, Calif. The postcard next to is is Angelus Temple, Church of the Four Square Gospel, Los Angeles, California. The Angelus Temple is still there, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992. It was built in 1923, the "largest construction of its time in North America" according to Wikipedia. Its construction was overseen by Aimee Semple McPherson, who was still preaching there in 1937 when the Johnsons visited. Here's an autographed picture of her inside the scrapbook, though whether or not they received it in person, or purchased it from a gift shop is hard to say. Due to her inclusion in the scrapbook, I'm guessing they attended one of her services. The temple still holds religious services, in fact. Aimee Semple McPherson was quite a character. Her Wikipedia page is long and makes for interesting reading. She was considered a faith healer, was purported to have affairs, suspected of faking her own kidnapping at one point, and died of a drug overdose in 1944. There have been novels written about her, movies made about her, musicals, plays...I recently read Sinclair Lewis's Elmer Gantry (highly recommended, by the way!) and just learned that one of the characters in the novel was based on McPherson. Back to the scrapbook! Though it's hard to see in the picture below, the date stamped on the Johnsons' DMV's Facts for Tourists is June 27, 1937. Despite some of the maudlin information I shared above, I'm guessing the Johnsons were having a grand old time. Mr. Fletcher was still alive and kicking, and Aimee Semple McPherson was still a giant media personality. When mid-westerners head to Los Angeles, a big thing on their minds is often movie stars, and I don't think the Johnsons were any different. Here's a sheet in the scrapbook, double sided, with points of interest on one side (hand numbered and checked off by the Johnsons) and directions to celebrity homes on the other side: Hard to see here, but some of the celebrities include Will Rogers, Lionel Barrymore, Buster Keaton, Tom Mix, Chas. S. Chaplin (!) and Harold Lloyd. I wonder if they spotted any movie stars walking up and down a sidewalk on Rodeo Drive? Next up is Los Angeles' Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the movies the Johnsons saw there! * * * * * Visit Joel's Amazon Page!

I am Karol Nienartowicz and I'm a 29-year old photographer from Poland. I was born in Jelenia Góra, a small town in the south-western part of the country, and now I live in Gdansk. I still recall one particular day in summer of 2003, when my mom took me on my first mountain trip. I saw that heart-breathing beauty of mountains and I quickly wanted to share this feeling with other people! Thus, I took my photo camera on my next trip. Since that moment, I've photographed mountains, combining photography with my great passion for traveling.

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!” — Dr. Seuss Not long ago I commented that steps need not be boring and I posted a series of photos of painted steps to illustrate the point. With imagination even something as ordinary as a set of stairs can be made fascinating and beautiful. Here are more examples, stairs decorated by mosaics: Steps in Coogee (a coastal suburb of Sydney). The man pictured is Alan Waddell, now deceased, who began walking after his wife of 60 years died in 2002. Walking daily for an average of 85 minutes per day, he determined to walk every street, laneway, stairs and path of Sydney and its suburbs. By his death in 2008, he had completed 291 suburbs. One other item of note, he was aged 94 when he died. His website, still updated regularly by his sons, contains many photos of interest, whimsy, humour, the bizarre and of beauty. See it by clicking here: http://www.walksydneystreets.net/index.htm San Francisco San Francisco Santa Teresa, Rio London Location Unknown Happonvilliers, near Chartres, France Italy San Francisco By the way: On the topic of mosaics and proving the old adage that the more things change, the more they remain the same, here are pics of some Roman mosaics excavated at the Villa Romana del Casale. Built in the 4th century and located in Sicily, it contains the richest, largest and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world. The mosaics below were discovered as a floor in a room dubbed the "Chamber of the Ten Maidens" and have been informally called "the bikini girls". They depict young women performing sports including weight lifting, discuss throwing, running and ball-games. Does the mosaic with the ball look like Olympic beach volleyball to anyone else?

A drive down to Glen Etive so often reaps it's rewards. I didn't have to travel far down the road before the sun started to break through the clouds. I grabbed a few shots before the swarm of pesky midges became too much to bear. I think it was worth the bites that I did receive.
