Welcome to the first installation of our House Cleansing Ceremony! Instead of presenting you with an overwhelming amount of information in a single post, I've decided to divide the House Cleansing Ceremony into four parts. The first three parts will detail the three major activities that occurred within the ritual: A negativity banishing spell, a bowl of blessed items and this, a protective rune chain! About the Elder Futhark Runes and Bind Runes Before I proceed, I'd like to give you a very, very brief introduction to runes. Call it Elder Futhark Runes 101 Super-Lite. Runes are symbols with specific meaning. They were typically a part of a now-obsolete alphabet, though there are rune sets that have no alphabetal meaning. Most commonly attributed as "runes" is the Norse alphabet. There are three distinct generations of that alphabet, but I prefer the oldest, called Elder Futhark. In Elder Futhark, there are 24 distinct runes, each with different alphabetical, numerological and magickal meanings. While often considered divination tools, that's not actually the runes' primary function. These markings can be used to claim, protect and charge. They're perfect for charms and talismans, as well as magickal names and spells. Once you are very, very comfortable and well-versed with the runes, you can begin combining individual runes aesthetically to make bind runes. These bind runes contain personalized meanings that reinforce the magick behind them. Before you continue, please note that I do not believe in reversed, inverted or merkstave positions. This is a personal choice I've made along my journey that suits me well. You may not have the same experience. Also remember that I've mentioned that bind runes are very personal. While I did borrow some bind runes, many of the bind runes below I created myself. These bind runes were created with my personal beliefs against merkstave runes. You are more than welcome to use them! I have no problem with that. However, bind runes and rune chains you construct entirely yourself will be better aligned with your personal energy! Planning the Rune Chain Like any good creative project, the rune chain began with a plan: I decided along the way to include simple runes and bind runes in a way that flowed into what we most wanted. Originally, I was going to go to my local craft store and purchase flattened wooden pieces. Using markers, I was going to inscribe the runes on each piece, then glue them to ribbon to hang. It wasn't ideal, but there were several reasons for this plan: (1) I did not own a drill to make the proper holes in the wooden plates and (2) I did not want to take any wood from our current residence to create a protective rune chain for a different living space, particularly with all the problems we'd had with the apartment we were previously living in. However, fellow CNF member and friend Kira presented a different option! At her home, she had the available tools to not only create the runes from a large wooden branch, but to also drill holes in them so I could properly chain them together without the aid of glue. I sent her the plans from above and she got to work, creating the beautiful runes I used for the ritual. She gave them to me the night before the House Cleansing Ceremony, ready to be charged and chained together. Truly, I could not have had such a gorgeous rune chain without her help. Thank you so much, Kira! Cleansing, Charging and Hanging the Runes Once I received the runes, I immediately cleansed them with sage and lemon juice. I then purchased suede rope and chained them together that evening. As I chained them together, I held each rune between my hands and whispered the runes and their meanings. This included the bind runes as well. Runes can have fluctuating meanings. The best way to ensure your intent is the one that comes forward is to imbue each rune with that specific intent. This is an important part of charging your chain! Here are the runes on the day of the house cleansing. I had refused to let them fully hang until we officially put them up during ritual. Instead, I gingerly wrapped them with bubble wrap and placed them in the box we used to transport the house cleansing items to the new rental house! During ritual, I charged them all between my hands with positive thoughts, thinking of the meaning of each rune. While I charged them, attendants held hands and lent me their positive energy and thoughts as well. My husband then immediately hung the runes on the doorway between the front room and the kitchen as planned. And here they are today! The Meaning of the Runes In case you didn't enlarge the planning image above, here are the individual runes and bind runes, and their intended meanings. As I mentioned before, this rune chain in very personal. You are welcome to copy it but it may not have the same strength and energy as a rune chain you create yourself! The rune chain began with this bind rune. A combination of Tiwaz (balance), Thurisaz (Defense), Algiz (Protection), Gebo (Gift) and Othala (Inheritance/ Property), this bind rune was created to mean "Home Protection." By starting with this rune, I'm stating clearly that I want this house protected. I alternated between bind runes and standard runes on the chain, meaning the next tile is simply a rune. This rune is Algiz. Representing elk, its root meaning is protection. This rune reinforces the bind rune above it. This next rune, of course, is a bind rune. You might recognize this rune from my prosperity orbs a couple Yules ago. This bind rune is a combination of Gebo (Gift), Algiz (Protection), Thurisaz (Defense), Ingwaz (Earth), Fehu (Financial Prosperity), and Othala (Inheritance/Property). Overall, this bind rune is for "Prosperity." In order to be successful in this house, we need prosperity in all aspects of our life. The next rune is Fehu, meaning Financial Prosperty. Fehu itself actually represents cattle, which in the time of the Elder Futhark alphabet, was a form of wealth. One of the biggest problems we had at the old apartment was financial troubles. This rune will hopefully counter that in our new space. Next up? Another bind rune. This one combines Algiz (Protection), Ehwaz (Teamwork), Ansuz (Communication) and Uruz (Strength) to mean "Friendship." Why friendship? My husband and I are rooming with our friend and fellow CNF member Tony. Say hi, Tony. The next tile is a rune meaning ancestors and inheritance called Othala. This rune brings family into the mix as well. The next bind rune is a combination of Wunjo (Joy), Thurisaz (Defense), and Ingwaz (Earth) and means "Happy Place." You might recognize this rune from our recent Mabon ritual: This rune brings happiness into the house. The next rune is Wunjo, which means joy and happiness. It further reinforces the bind rune above it. This bind rune combines Uruz (Strength), Ingwaz (meaning Earth, but also inner power), Tiwaz (Balance), Wunjo (Joy), Dagaz (Breakthrough), Ansuz (Communication), Jera (Cycle) and Algiz (Protection). Goodness! Why all the combinations? I built this rune to represent "Good Physical and Mental Health." I had so many health issues at the apartment, struggling with Multiple Autoimmune Syndrome (specifically scleritis, Celiac Disease and a vitamin D deficiency), and anxiety and depression. I don't want to have that same experience here, and am hopeful that this rune will ward against that. Sowilo is a sun rune that represents success and victory. This rune actually enforces the bind rune beneath it. The final rune on the chain is a bind rune. This combines Jera (Cycle/Harvest), Sowilo (Success), Ansuz (Communication) and Ingwaz (Earth) to represent "A Home We Stay In." My husband and I have moved four times in the past four years, and five times in the six years we've been married. I don't want to move anymore. My hope is that all of the above runes and bind runes lead to a happy and successful residency, meaning that we will choose to sign a lease again when our current lease comes up. Coming from the last rune of the chain are five knots. These five knots, and their spaces between, represent the five years we would like to stay in this house. According to my financial plans, we will be able to fully pay off his student loans after five years. At that time, I would like to start saving and purchase a house. The ending bow has four leaves, representing stability (and maybe a bit of luck) that we will need if we purchase a home. Ending Notes Overall, I feel this rune chain flows very well, like a perfect story. We begin by protecting our home, and imbuing it with the things we need for stability here - prosperity in all aspects of life, financial prosperity, friendship and family. We then ask for this to be a happy place, and that we will be healthy here as well. We end the chain by saying that, if all these things will come to pass, this will be a place we will stay. The bottom of the chain defines the time as five years, room to save and ends in a house that we actually own. If you decide to create a rune chain of your own, keep in mind the following points: Rune chains you put together yourself are more powerful and more connected to you than rune chains you purchase or mimic. Likewise, bind runes that you put together yourself are more powerful and more connected to you than bind runes you mimic. Your rune chain should flow in a way that gets you from A to Z of your tale, particularly if you use an alphabet system, such as the Elder Futhark. It makes the most sense that your letters should form a story! Be sure to define a time and an outcome on your rune chain in some way. Spells, talismans and charms work best if they have the specifics of your needs. It doesn't have to be knots and bows! There are so many creative ways you could end your chain. Cleanse your rune chain, either with sage, purified water, salt or some cleansing substance. You want to remove any negativity that may have come from the wood and rope's previous life. Be sure to charge each rune individually. Whisper its name, or names if it's a bind rune, into the tile. Tell it what it means. Runes can have so many meanings, so be sure to define your intent! Charge the rune chain as a whole with your end goal in mind. Envision what you want your rune chain to accomplish as you do so. Hang the runes with care! If you have cats that may play with the end of your rune chain, try soaking it with lemon juice or lavender essential oil. My cats have paid the rune chain no attention. Or maybe it's because they're familiars. Who knows! Best of luck to you on your rune chain creating adventures! TO SEE THE FULL HOUSE CLEANSING RITUAL, CLICK HERE! If you've followed me for a while you might know that I have a thing for spoons. Its not just because they're good for eating soup! I think they're lovely objects and perfectly crafted for stirring up magic. And with that in mind, I've made a kitchen witch pentagram. If you're not witchy in the least don't fear - you are very welcome to create this is a simple pretty star. Best of all the materials for this project are few and simple. Spoons, twine, glue, paint, flowers. That's it! Heck, you probably have that in your house already. A package of wooden spoons usually comes with three in various sizes. Now, you could just cut them all to the same length... or buy five packages and make a set of three different sized stars. BUY THEM ALLLLLL!!!!! I've carved the edges of the spoons to give an old, weathered, almost handmade look to them. I think it makes a BIG difference, but please be careful when whittling away. The flowers and leaves I used were grabbed from the bottom of my stash bin. If you're making a pentagram as opposed to a star, you might want to consider the magical properties of the colours you use. You could go so far as to incorporate dried herbs, flowers and other natural elements with magical intent. A pretty pentagram with protective qualities perhaps? AND... there's a video tute. Pop over to my YouTube channel to see it HERE or check below. Please use it. Please share it. Please tag me if you create this project. It's so encouraging to see your work and it's absolutely appreciated when you link back to me. Bone throwing is one of the oldest forms of divination and can be found across multiple cultures throughout history. Because of this, there are multiple ways to practice throwing the bones and ways to interpret their meanings. If you come from reading traditional tarot or runes, you may find bone throwing frustrating and difficult. Unlike other forms of divination, throwing the bones is highly intuitive and bone sets are extremely personalized; no two sets or readers will be the same. Because of this, it's a highly effective form of divination, whether you are reading strictly for yourself or others. What is Used in a Set? There are a variety of ways to set up your "bone tarot" set depending upon the tradition(s) you may prescribe to or lack thereof. Most sets consist of bones, shells, stones, and small curios such as dice, coins, or other little trinkets while some are composed only of chicken bones, sometimes even painted to have different meanings. What the set is made up of is completely up to you and, honestly, not very important. However, the meaning behind each item and the item's relation to each other is important. How did they fall? Where are they located? Are they touching each other? How far apart are they? Together, the set works to answer the question the caster has asked of it. How Do You Read Bone Tarot? Again, there are multiple ways to read bones. You can work heavily with your ancestors for a more interpreted reading, relying on them to bring you inspiration while reading the bones. Others with a more scientific mind rely on a more analytical approach, connecting meaning to the pieces based on science and their placement on the cloth. Others still work with the spirits that live in the individual objects, listening to them as they whisper back details. Personally, I like to use a combination of these methods, using my prescribed meanings and the spirits to guide my interpretation of the reading. When you are first starting out, you may find a more analytical approach to be best, because its more like traditional tarot in that the location is associated with a specific question, body part, or event while each piece of the bone throwing set is also prescribed a predetermined meaning, such as a wing bone meaning travel. When it doubt, go with your gut. Despite the different ways to read bones, many practitioners use some similar techniques. To begin with, a question is always asked. Bone throwing can provide a narrow or wide perspective, depending on the situation, and therefore the question needn't be perfectly worded or specific. Most people find asking a question about something that is weighing heavily on you that you may or may not be able to completely put into words is best. However, if you come with a specific and perfectly worded question, bone throwing will still work just fine and allows for a more focused reading. Once the question is asked, the reader shakes the bone throwing set and casts them. Where you cast them is up to you. Some cast on a hard surface or on a fur or cloth with nothing on it; others on a cloth with designated regions; while others still cast in a design drawn in the dirt. Again, where you cast is entirely up to you. I have thrown on cloth with designated regions and on blank surfaces. I like both methods and choose a surface based on the type of question I am asking. For vaguer questions, I prefer a mat with designated regions. This allows for a more focused reading. If my question is more specific, I tend to ignore the designated locations and focus on proximity and reading left to right. Once the bones are cast, they are analyzed and meaning is prescribed to their placement to offer insight into the question asked. Remember to record all your readings in your journal or Book of Shadows. Sometimes it takes a little while for the full message to come into view, so return to your notes for a couple of days after the reading and add to your notes. Once cast, there are many ways to read the bones: Left to Right- The bones are considered on a timeline from left to right, with the bones on the left representing the past, those in the middle the present, and those on the right the future or possible outcomes. Distance from the Reader- Those closest to the reader represent the past, middle present, and those furthest away represent the future or possible outcome. Non-Linear Orientation- The items are not read in a linear sequence, but instead interpreted as a whole based on their placement on the surface and to each other. This relies more heavily on spiritual guidance. Of course, these are only a couple of ways to read and by no means the only ways. I encourage you to use your intuition while reading and change up how you read based on the questions being asked. How to Construct a Bone Set? Want to make your own "bone tarot?" Creating your own set is pretty fun, but a little time-consuming. Sure, you can buy a set online, and this is a great place to start, but building your own will create a stronger connection between you and the bones. I've talked to other witches who began by buying a set and removing the items that didn't resonate with them and incorporating items into it that did. There is no right or wrong way to do this, and I am still building my own set! When you begin creating your bone set, start by setting the intention that you are open to receiving objects for use in divination. Then begin going through items you may already have. Check junk drawers and other places you stash random objects. If there is something small that you've never quite been able to let go of, it may be something that belongs in your bone throwing set. Remember, not everything has to be a bone! In fact, you don't need bones at all if that's what you want. Buttons, crystals, small pieces of driftwood, bottle caps, dice, small carved figures, pieces of cardboard tags, seeds and beans, and a variety of other small objects all work! If it speaks to you and feels right in your set, then it's meant to be. However, I do have a couple of things you should keep in mind. First, you should have an object that represents you. Generally, this object is slightly bigger than the others. Next, the items in your set should mean something. Think about tarot and rune meanings. There is a card or rune that represents health, wealth, love, family, etc. You want a set to have the same sorts of representations so you can get a good reading. I also suggest you add objects that mean yes and no, evil, and decision (a coin is great for this), but you don't have to have these things. Below is a list of items you may want to include in your bone tarot and some possible meanings for those objects: feather- flight, travel, communication, messages from the dead coin- yes/no wishbone- luck, prosperity, good fortune skeleton key- transition, open doors, opportunity, crossroads, decisions quartz point- amplification, positivity, protection, versatility amethyst- soul, afterlife, psychic ability fossil- past, ancestors, perseverance claw- past, present, or future depending on the size white shell- purity, hope, innocence curved bone- yes/no sors bone- fate, destiny, external influences (this is not an actual bone in the body. Instead, its a term, originating from another form of divination, to refer to the smallest, thinnest, or rarest bone in your set. You do not have to prescribe this meaning to any of your small/thin/rare bones. I personally prefer to work with the bones function in the body to determine meaning.) human finger- singling out an issue white river rock- purity, innocence, food intentions black river rock- banishment, bad luck, evil barnacle- smothered, overwhelmed, chaos alligator claw- luck, prosperity, opportunities, success penis bone- love, fertility, luck coyote bone- trickery, apprehension, fooled by appearances bean- growth, fertility, opportunity buckeye nut- abundance, fertility, luck, achievement, employment hag stone- protection, spiritual transformation, messages dice- numbers button- connection, bonds tooth- communication, truth, lies, rumors (depending on how it faces) This list is just to give you some ideas and you should prescribe meaning to your objects based on your intuition. As you gather items, spend time holding them and meditating on them to figure out their meaning. Be sure to keep your notes on each item in your Grimoire or Book of Shadows. Items can be removed or added as you see fit, but always write down what you have removed or added an object so you know what your set contains and the meanings of each object. But overall, have fun with it and practice often. It's a truly magical experience to work with a bone tarot set and will flex that intuitive muscle. And that concludes my series on Bone Magic! I hope this series has been informative and has inspired you to work with animal remains in your practice. Maybe you'll start constructing your own bone throwing set or set out to find your first animal skull. However you decide to work with animal remains, remember to keep their spirits in mind. This year Christmas decor ideas evade gaudiness and oscillate towards balanced décor with farmhouse rustic and Scandinavian overtones.
Good Morning Friends & Folk ~ a very Merry Yule and a beautiful Winter Solstice to us all.... 'tis the shortest day of the year... the wheel turns slightly once again to bring us more sun each day! This old farmhouse holds many memories of Christmas' past, not only for our family but of those who lived here before... each year as we cozy up the house, I can envision those-before us doing the same and it brings me a great sense of peace and welcoming. it will be a cold Christmas here in our parts of Virginia, the woodpiles are stocked and the homefires are burning bright ~ tea kettles and soup-pots are bubbling and the scents of orange, cloves and pine wafts through the air ~ the halls are decked and the bells are jingling! ....and we will welcome home our daughter to spend the Holiday at home.... merriment, comfort food and cozy slippers await us as we hunker down for the rest of this year, ~ readying ourselves to ring in a sparkling-fresh 2023. {all photos found on Pinterest} Blessings from the Farm ~ Lori
Looking for the perfect Pagan or witch name? Check out our list of over 100 magickal names drawn from the realms of the occult. Whether it’s for yourself, an animal familiar, or a fictional character, have fun perusing these delightfully witchy monikers. Christian names have usually honored Biblical figures and saints, but Pagans prefer to name themselves after nature, folklore, and the gods of antiquity. Many names are drawn from ancient stories and are charged with mythic power. Some of the names on this list didn’t start out magickal, but got that way in modern times through association with famous witches. (This is admittedly a Eurocentric list, since my own background is in classical literature and Western magick. If you are the bearer of a witchy name from another tradition, I’d love to learn about it!) Many witch names are unisex and others can be adapted to any gender. Creating compound names are one way that Pagans pay homage to sacred objects, spirits, and concepts (e.g., Raven Moonflower or Amethyst Dragonfyre). Try mixing and matching these first names with your favorite nouns and adjectives to create your very own Craft name. Adelinda - A Germanic name meaning

The Witch’s Runes are a set of magic symbols used as an oracle. (They’re unrelated to the Norse runes and other archaic alphabets.) While the exact age of this symbol set is unknown, it draws upon familiar images that will be instantly recognizable to the unconscious mind. Over time, Witch’s Runes have gained a reputation as an easy-to-learn, no-frills method for divining the past, present, and future. Author Dana Corby published an article in the Crystal Well magazine in the 1970s outlining a traditional divination method using 13 runic symbols. (It has since been expanded and re-released as a paperback and e-book.) The Witchs Runes system later got the book treatment from Susan Sheppard in 1998 with A Witch's Runes: How to Make and Use Your Own Magick Stones. Since we are dealing with an evolving, folk magick system, there are no authoritative texts on the Witch's Runes. There are a few different versions of the Runes on the market—sets may contain eight, 10, or 13 tiles. (Meanings vary too, depending on who you ask.) Thirteen is an excellent witchy number, but the eight-rune set wins points for its symmetry and simplicity. A set of eight Witch's Runes corresponds to the eight Wiccan Sabbats, providing a built-in mechanism for answering questions of timing. Occasionally, Grove and Grotto offers handcrafted Witches' Runes sets. Or, you can make your own from wood or stone tiles. Check out the suggested meanings and correspondences: The Moon (Midwinter) Inner thoughts, intuition, contemplation, solitude, change. The Birds (Imbolc) News, business matters, communication, inspiration and beginnings. The Leaf (Ostara) Growth, abundance, promise of harvest, good fortune. A strong
